From the Pilothouse

April is right around the corner, and that brings a flurry of activity at ISEA. There is, of course, the spring fit-out of the ship. Remy, Allen, Jan and Bob will be at work bringing the schooner back to life in early April. We expect to have the ship back in Suttons Bay around April 12 and finish painting, rigging and other tasks at our home dock.

Crew training in April includes a First Aid Certification class and dockside and underway drills. Training continues all season long, but the drills in April will get the crew ready for the first volunteer training cruise on April 30 and the beginning of spring Schoolship Programs on May 3.

The office staff (Tom S., Kim, Christine) are busy with volunteer training and scheduling, grant writing, and new program development. We are also updating ISEA's Strategic Plan, working on the FY 2010-2011 budget, and of course, fund raising.

You probably know that schools only pay 1/3 of the total cost of their Schoolship Program. We are committed to provide the other 2/3. This is where ISEA's loyal donors come in. Your generosity over the years has provided life-changing learning experiences for over 83,000 students since our founding in 1989. I ask you to help us stay on course in 2010 and beyond by making a generous donation to ISEA. When you see our red sails on the horizon, you will know that another crew of young scientists is aboard, creating new dreams for a better tomorrow.

Last Chance for Volunteer Instructor Training

Volunteers learn about water chemistry form veteran instructor Sally SomselISEA's weekly new volunteer instructor training has come to an end, but there are still plenty of opportunities for training before the 2010 Schoolship season begins in May.

Veteran instructor training will be held Wednesday, April 14th from 1:00 - 5:00pm. This is an excellent chance to gain more background knowledge about each station and to learn what might have changed in the Schoolship Program since 2009.

Lead instructor training will be held Wednesday, April 21st from 2:00 - 5:00pm. We are always looking for volunteers interested in becoming a lead instructor...this is the perfect time to see what it is all about.

The volunteer wet run will be held Friday, April 30th. There is a morning session that runs from 8:30am - 12:30pm and an afternoon session from 1:15 - 5:15pm. Come sail aboard Inland Seas and experience the Schoolship Program from the student's point of view.

Volunteers Needed to Create Watershed Videos

Listening to the River

ISEA is partnering with the Land Information Access Association (LIAA) and their Listening to the River Program to create eight watershed-related videos. LIAA is interested in capturing various aspects of our watershed explored during the Schoolship Program using video footage, interviews with students, and much more. You will spend about 1 week capturing and editing 3-5 minute videos that will be featured on Up North TV and on ISEA's website. LIAA will provide all the training and resources you need - no experience is required! If you are interested or would like more information about this opportunity, contact ISEA Education Director Christine Crissman at 231-271-3077 or by e-mail.
