March has come in like a lamb, with crisp days of sun and light winds.  This is the first winter I can remember without ice on Suttons Bay. This time last year the nighttime temperature was -9 degrees F and the Lower West Arm of Grand Traverse Bay froze for the first time since 2003. I remember breaking the ice around our dock when we returned with the ship from our winter berth on April 13th. Earlier our dock had been damaged by moving ice but luckily Don Balcom was nearby with his tug and crane barge to do the repairs. I don't think we will have to worry about that this year.  An examination of  Grand Traverse Bay ice data shows a recent trend toward fewer ice covered winters. Prior to the 1980's, the Bay was rarely ice-free (one or two winters/decade). Since then, the opposite is true.  Evidence for global climate change?  I'll let the climatologists decide on that.  You can see a plot of this data, courtesy of Jim Nugent,  on the ISEA Ship's blog.

You can also see photos from the ISEA Boat Shop on the blog, including weekly photos of our students building a pair of Optimist Prams and a cedar strip canoe.

By this time next month we will be well into spring fit-out of Inland Seas. I'm ready to go sailing!  So are lots of teachers and students. We now have 57 classes signed up for spring, with about a dozen more pending.  If you know a teacher who you think should bring their class on the Schooship, have them contact the ISEA office. Kim is waiting to take their call.

Great Lakes Seminar Series: "Aquatic Plant Study of Grand Traverse Bay"
March 9, 2010

Sampling aquatic plants in Grand Traverse BayThe Inland Seas Education Association will present a seminar that focuses on aquatic plants at 7:00pm on Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at the Inland Seas Education Center. Sarah U'Ren, Program Director at The Watershed Center Grand Traverse Bay, will discuss the recent study of aquatic plants in Grand Traverse Bay. This seminar is free and open to the public.

In summer 2009, The Watershed Center conducted a macrophyte bed survey of Grand Traverse Bay, utilizing aerial photography and their Bay Monitor tugboat. Additionally, a variety of water quality and sediment tests at various bed locations were conducted to analyze for nutrients such as phosphorus. Results from this study show a marked increase in the number of aquatic plant beds compared to surveys conducted in 1991 and 1998. The study also provides baseline data that will help ascertain the link between aquatic plant growth, phosphorus cycling, and invasive mussels, as well as any connection to avian botulism.

Upcoming Volunteer Instructor Training

Jerry Inman teaches new volunteers about invasive zebra and quagga musselsISEA's new volunteer instructor training is well underway with a great new class of volunteers. If you missed out on attending the weekly training, there are still plenty of opportunities for training before the 2010 Schoolship season begins in May.

The all day volunteer instructor training will be held Wednesday, April 7th from 9:00am - 5:00pm. Come for the whole day or simply refresh your knowledge on a few stations.

Veteran instructor training will be held Wednesday, April 14th from 1:00 - 5:00pm. This is an excellent chance to gain more background knowledge about each station and to learn what might have changed in the program since 2009.

The volunteer wet run will be held Friday, April 30th. There is a morning session that runs from 8:30am - 12:30pm and an afternoon session from 1:15 - 5:15pm. Come sail aboard Inland Seas and experience the Schoolship Program from the student's point of view.

Volunteers Needed to Create Watershed Videos

Listening to the River

ISEA is partnering with the Land Information Access Association (LIAA) and their Listening to the River Program to create eight watershed-related videos. LIAA is interested in capturing various aspects of our watershed explored during the Schoolship Program using video footage, interviews of students, and much more. LIAA will provide all the training and resources you need - no experience is required! If you are interested or would like more information about this opportunity, contact ISEA Education Director Christine Crissman at 231-271-3077 or by e-mail.
