Volume II, Issue 8 - August 2009

From the Pilot House...It is late August but somehow there is a feel of fall in the air.  Let's hope we have a long autumn with lots of sunny sailing weather!

We are about to transition from our summer sailing schedule to our fall school schedule.  To date we have 18 programs scheduled after Labor Day (not including our participation in the Michigan Schooner Festival).  We will host schools from Kalkaska, Benzie County, Ann Arbor, Stevensville, Beverly Hills, and Traverse City.  We also have one adult Schoolship program this fall.

Each of these 500+ students will have the experience of a life-time aboard our Schoolship.  Thanks to our loyal donors, volunteers, crew and staff for making this possible.  Through our combined efforts we will make a difference in these students' lives, and in the future of the Great Lakes.

August 29, 2009

Join us Saturday morning, August 29, from 8:00-11:00am at the Inland Seas Education Center for a Nautical Flea Market. There are 3 ways to participate:

1.  Donate your excess nautical pieces to ISEA before the event (& get a receipt to use for your tax return)

2.  Bring your nautical treasures to our building before 8:00am on Saturday and set up your own sales table (perhaps you will consider a tax-exempt donation to ISEA after your sales bonanza)

3.  Come to the flea market on Saturday and take home some bargain marine hardware, equipment, or perhaps even a small boat. We have ground tackle, deck hardware, lights, marine electronics, pumps, models, books, etc.

For more information, please call ISEA Executive Director Tom Kelly at (231) 271-3077.

Powering up Efforts Against the Advancing Asian CarpAsian Carp

Asian carp were introduced in the 1970s in Arkansas to control algae in aquaculture ponds. Flooding in the 1980s and '90s led to their escape into the Mississippi River. Since then, the advancement of Asian carp toward the Great Lakes has been a major concern. An electronic barrier was constructed in the Chicago Ship and Sanitary Canal to deter Asian carp from entering the Great Lakes. Asian carp were recently discovered within 7 miles of this barrier, causing the Army Corps of Engineers to reconsider the voltage being transmitted. Click here for more information.
