Inland Seas Summer Festival a Huge Success!
The 2009 Inland Seas Summer Festival was a fantastic event! Over 1,000 people participated in the activities.
We would like to thank ISEA volunteers and board members for all their hard work making the festival such a success. Thanks to all the performers that provided music throughout the day, including Song of the Lakes, the Wild Sullys, and Handy Billy.
We would also like to thank the following partner organizations for their participation, including The Watershed Center Grand Traverse Bay and their Baykeeper tug, Great Lakes Bioneers, Grand Traverse Conservation District, Grand Traverse Lighthouse, Maritime Heritage Alliance, Michigan Sea Grant, Grand Traverse Bay Underwater Preserve, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, and Northwestern Michigan College's Great Lakes Water Studies Institute.
Approximately 600 people toured the schooners Inland Seas and Madeline, as well as the Baykeeper tug.
Our raffle added excitement (500 tickets sold), and the winners went away with three great prizes (Abenaki canoe, Trek Calypso bicycle, and dinner for four at Stella's).
A wonderful selection of food and treats was provided throughout the day from House of Doggs, Martha's Cafe, Silvertree Deli, and Pop-Kies Popcorn.
The Festival was truly a Celebration of the Great Lakes. Thanks to everyone who helped make it such a success!
Mark your calendars for next year's ISEA Summer Festival July 17, 2010. |

Amazing Video of Quagga Mussels Feeding
The latest edition of the Aquatics Science Chronicle includes an interesting article about zebra mussels trying to survive while quagga mussel populations continue to expand. This article includes a fascinating time-lapsed video of quagga mussels filtering the water. You can actually watch as they filter algae out of the water and spit out anything they do not want to eat. Check out both the article and the video on the Aquatics Science Chronicle website.
The Aquatic Science Chronicle is a publication of the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute and the University of Wisconsin Water Resources Institute. |
