From the Pilot House   It's great to be back in Suttons Bay (now that summer has finally begun) after a month in Europe with my family. In addition to visiting friends and relatives, we visited several marine and fishing museums and spent six days aboard the 54' motorsailer St. Hilda in the west of Scotland. As with most of my travels, I am always picking up things that we can incorporate here at ISEA to make our programs better. I'll be working on some of these ideas in the months to come.

A special thanks to the office staff and boat crew for keeping everything shipshape while I was away.

Inland Seas co-sponsored the new Great Lakes film Waterlife at the Traverse City Film Festival this week. We also had open house aboard Inland Seas each evening this week in Traverse City.  If you did not get a chance to see Waterlife at the Film Festival, watch for an ISEA benefit showing this fall. We'll pass along the details when they are firmed up.

I look forward to sailing with you this summer.

Inland Seas Summer Festival a Huge Success!
 80,000th student
The 2009 Inland Seas Summer Festival was a fantastic event! Over 1,000 people participated in the activities.

We would like to thank ISEA volunteers and board members for all their hard work making the festival such a success. Thanks to all the performers that provided music throughout the day, including Song of the Lakes, the Wild Sullys, and Handy Billy.

We would also like to thank the following partner organizations for their participation, including The Watershed Center Grand Traverse Bay and their Baykeeper tug, Great Lakes Bioneers, Grand Traverse Conservation District, Grand Traverse Lighthouse, Maritime Heritage Alliance, Michigan Sea Grant, Grand Traverse Bay Underwater Preserve, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, and Northwestern Michigan College's Great Lakes Water Studies Institute.
 80,000th student
Approximately 600 people toured the schooners Inland Seas and Madeline, as well as the Baykeeper tug.

Our raffle added excitement (500 tickets sold), and the winners went away with three great prizes (Abenaki canoe, Trek Calypso bicycle, and dinner for four at Stella's).

A wonderful selection of food and treats was provided throughout the day from House of Doggs, Martha's Cafe, Silvertree Deli, and Pop-Kies Popcorn.

The Festival was truly a Celebration of the Great Lakes. Thanks to everyone who helped make it such a success!

Mark your calendars for next year's ISEA Summer Festival July 17, 2010.
Underwater Exploration of Grand Traverse Bay

Join ISEA for a day-long underwater exploration of shipwrecks and underwater features in Grand Traverse Bay. Come along with underwater photographer Chris Doyal and underwater archeologist Dr. Mark Holley as they investigate the remains of ships long concealed under the surface. Talk with the divers as they explore the wrecks using  the two-way audio communication system. Watch as they encounter schools of fish and other creatures using live video connected to underwater ROVs (remote operated vehicles). Learn about the maritime history of Grand Traverse Bay as you become crew members on the gaff-rigged schooner Inland Seas.

August 18, 2009. 9 am - 5 pm, includes lunch.
$80/person, $75/child under 18; limited to 25 people.

Amazing Video of Quagga Mussels Feeding

The latest edition of the Aquatics Science Chronicle includes an interesting article about zebra mussels trying to survive while quagga mussel populations continue to expand. This article includes a fascinating time-lapsed video of quagga mussels filtering the water. You can actually watch as they filter algae out of the water and spit out anything they do not want to eat. Check out both the article and the video on the Aquatics Science Chronicle website.

The Aquatic Science Chronicle is a publication of the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute and the University of Wisconsin Water Resources Institute.
