Spring has finally sprung and the crew is hard at work getting the ship ready for our 15th Schoolship season.

We currently have 85 classes booked for spring, and more are signing up each week. We are looking forward to a great 21st year of providing Great Lakes education to the students of Michigan.  See you on the water!

DTE Energy Announces Cherry Festival Partnership with Inland Seas and DTE Energy Foundation Grant of $75,000IS in distance at sunset 
At today's Cherry Festival news conference in Traverse City, DTE Energy Vice President Michael Porter announced that Inland Seas Education Association will be their partner in the lead float of the Cherry Royale Parade. He also presented ISEA's Executive Director Tom Kelly with a check representing DTE Energy Foundation's three-year grant of $75,000. This grant will make possible Schoolship programs for hundreds of Michigan students. You can see the presentation on TV 7&4 news this evening.
Help Clean the Beaches in Northwest Michigan 
 
ISEA is looking for Beach Cleanup volunteers to remove trash from the shoreline of the Great Lakes and inland waterways from Saturday April 18 through Sunday May 10, 2009. Over the last 20 years ISEA has organized spring Beach Cleanup events that keep the shoreline of rivers, lakes, and streams clean in Manistee, Benzie, Leelanau, Grand Traverse, Antrim, Kalkaska, and Charlevoix counties.
 
This spring, ISEA and the Grand Traverse Bay Underwater Preserve are also doing their part to help keep the waters of the Great Lakes clean. An underwater cleanup is scheduled Saturday May 9 from 10:00am - 2:00pm at the ISEA dock in Suttons Bay. If you are interested in participating in the underwater cleanup, please contact ISEA Education Director Christine Crissman by e-mail or phone at 231-271-3077. Volunteers are also needed on shore assist the divers.

The Inland Seas Summer Festival will take place on Saturday, July 18, 2009 from 10:00am - 4:00pm on the waterfront at the Inland Seas Education Center in Suttons Bay. Come help ISEA celebrate 20 years of providing science and sailing adventures for over 80,000 students of all ages.

The Inland Seas Summer Festival will be an event for the entire family so plan to come and spend the entire day. Enjoy a variety of lunch selections provided by local restaurants and the fellowship of the community that makes the Great Lakes great! For complete details, visit our website.

Phragmites Workshop

Aerial shot of SB in summerThe Watershed Center Grand Traverse Bay is hosting a public forum concerning Phragmites at the Hagerty Center on June 6, 2009. Presentations will be given during two identical programs: 9:00am - 12:00pm or 2:00 - 5:00pm. Topics include an overview on Phragmites, control options, permitting procedures, and how you can get involved. The exhibit hall will also provide booths, displays, and informational handouts throughout the workshop.

Great Lakes Seminar Series
 
ISEA's next seminar is on June 10, 2009 at 7:00 pm. "Changes in the Lake Michigan Lower Food Web" will be presented by Gary Fahnenstiel, Senior Ecologist with the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory. Seminars are free and open to the public.
