Although all I see from my office window is ice, the calendar tells me spring is coming and next week the crew will begin fit-out of Inland Seas.  We hope to have the boat back in Suttons Bay by early April, and we will be ready for underway training exercises by April 20th.  We could use a little help during fit-out as Jan Hale is recovering from surgery and won't be able to help out this spring. Call me or Capt. Remy if you would like to help.

We have a busy spring planned with 80 school classes already signed up. Our first Schoolship programs aboard Inland Seas are on May 1st, and aboard Manitou on May 8th. We also have a full summer schedule with several new programs.  Check out Geology of Grand Traverse Bay, Underwater Exploration, and Literature of the Seas, all new this year.

A special thanks to the 102 loyal donors who responed to our special Early Spring Funding Campaign. We received $16,325 to date, and donations continue to come in.  These gifts will ensure ISEA's Spring Schoolship programs will continue in the excellent tradition of the past 20 years, benefiting the Great Lakes and the youth of Michigan.

We welcome three new board members who will help guide and provide for Inland Seas in the coming years. They are Larry Garber, Bob Evatt, and Jane Klegman.  This year's officers are Jay Zelenock, President; Eric Dreier, 1st Vice President; Lois Bahle, 2nd Vice President, Sally Somsel, Secretary; Mary Krantz, Tresurer; and Chuck Cady, Immediate Past President.  A big thanks goes to retiring board member David Hunter. David will continue to be involved with several board committees.  Thank you to all of our present and past board members!

Volunteer Instructor Training

The 12-week Volunteer Instructor Training classes are almost complete. However, there are still several opportunities to get involved in training sessions for new and veteran volunteer instructors.
  • All-day Instructor Training: April 7, 2009 from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm.

All training sessions take place at the Inland Seas Education Center in Suttons Bay. For more information or to register for a training session contact ISEA Education Director Christine Crissman at (231) 271-3077.

Don't Forget - Your Company May Match Your Gift

Many ISEA donors currently work for, or are retired from, companies who will match individual contributions with corporate gifts. Some provide a one-to-one match that will double your donation to Inland Seas. Please take a moment to contact your company or organization to inquire about their matching gift program as many of our donors already have.

Congress Approves Funds for Invasive Species Prevention

Aerial shot of SB in summer

Congress recently granted nearly $1 million to help slow the introduction of invasive species into the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway system. The new funding will go towards the Great Ships Initiative, a collaboration aimed at accelerating research, development, and implementation of ballast water treatments. For more information about this initiative, visit the Great Ships Initiative
website.
Calling All ISEA Students!!!

We would like to hear from our former students about their experience aboard the Schoolship. If you know someone who has sailed with us, forward this e-newsletter to them, or suggest they visit our Facebook page, e-mail us or check out our website.
