Spring, and Sailing, are Almost Here!

It is hard to believe, but in just  6 weeks our schooner Inland Seas will begin her 15th season.  The crew will begin fit-out on March 30. Let's hope the ice is gone by then!

We have 75 school classes signed up for Spring Schoolship, with about 10 more pending. We also have a busy summer season planned (see our public schedule below).

Our Boat Shop continues to be a busy place this winter with students working on canoe #7 and an Optimist pram.  See the shop in action  tomorrow morning (2-25-09) on the TV 9-10 news beginning at 6:15 am.

As always, thanks go to our loyal volunteers and donors, who make all this possible.  We look forward to another great season of Protecting the Great Lakes Through Education.

Honoring ISEA's 2008 Volunteers
 IS in distance at sunset
ISEA honored its 220 active volunteers on Friday, January 30th at its annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner at the Inland Seas Education Center. One hundred and forty volunteers and friends gathered for the event hosted by ISEA staff and board members.

IS in distance at sunsetDuring 2008, volunteers donated 11,825 hours of service resulting in a contribution to ISEA worth $241,805. The true value of this donated time cannot be measured -- we couldn't possibly account for the enthusiasm and commitment that our volunteers bring to their work with ISEA.

All Washed Up: Lake Michigan's Algae Challenge

Excessive algae piling up on Lake Michigan's shoreline has everyone asking, "What is causing this and what can we do?" The University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute has published an excellent educational video that discusses what the problem is, why the algae is growing so much, and what we can do to reduce its growth. Click here to see the video and learn more about this issue.
Inland Seas Launches New
Spring Appeal

In response to the fundraising challenges facing most charitable organizations in this current economic climate, ISEA initiated our first-ever Spring Appeal. We have already reduced our annual budget by 10% and increased our efforts to secure additional grant funding. Even so, we will require an additional $87,000 in donations by June 30th to enable us to provide the shipboard educational programs already booked for 2,730 kids this spring. Click here to see how you can help us continue our important work of Protecting the Great Lakes Through Education.
Great Lakes Seminar Series

ISEA's next seminar is on March 5, 2009 at 7:00 pm. "E. coli Levels in Grand Traverse Bay" will be presented by Rick Rediske, Senior Program Manager with the Annis Water Resources Institute. Seminars are free and open to the public. Click here for more information.

Seminars are held at the Inland Seas Education Center, 100 Dame Street, Suttons Bay, MI 49682.
