NAMI Standards of Excellence
Now that NAMI North Carolina has signed a new charter with NAMI, it is time for us to help all of our affiliates in the process. Given that we truly are "Better Together" this is a great opportunity for us to collaborate across all parts of NAMI to achieve a common, important goal.
NAMI North Carolina staff and board members are working hard to make sure that each and every NAMI Affiliate has the capacity they need to serve people with mental illness in our communities.
To that end, we are prepared to support Affiliates on the pathway to affiliation by:
- Regular Q & A and information exchange on the President's call, first Wednesday of each month, 7-8 PM
- Training at our regional conferences (Eastern region will be February 25 in Greenville) and training at an annual leadership conference to be held in Raleigh (date TBD, probably summer, possibly connected to our annual conference)
- Continued written help in quarterly nonprofit Tips and Tools
- Blog or other form of shared communications for all affiliates to participate
- Technical assistance from staff in the office - upon request; phone or in person
Don't forget, NAMI will be hosting webinars which introduce the affiliation process and the first installment of the NAMI Affiliate Handbook.
Finally, NAMI's website has really expanded, offering great tips and templates to help you and your board through the affiliation process. Items your affiliate may find especially helpful are:
Upon reviewing the NAMI Affiliate HandbookI hope you will agree that much of the information required for the first phase of Affiliation (for the most part) is collecting and updating information you probably already have.
But before you go too far - it is best to start at the beginning! Here are a few recommendations to lighten the load and sail smoothly through the process!
- Form a Committee - this will help get a broad perspective of where members of your affiliate want to go and can also shed light on where you have been!
- Take the Affiliate Self Assessment - then begin to work on 1-2 topics each month. Some will move quickly and others will take a little more time!
- Determine if your affiliate is a Small/Emerging, Community/Support, Developing or Full Service affiliate. This will help determine what criteria you should work on!
- Start collecting information and send to Brenda Piper at the NAMI North Carolina office - she is your contact person and will file and update our records.
NAMI North Carolina is here to help! So be sure to let us know if you have any questions or encounter any roadblocks along the way!
