Have a question about the NAMI Standards of Excellence? Get an answer by contacting centerforexcellence@nami.org. They will get back to you directly and share frequently-asked questions, and links to tools and resources, in this bulletin.

Q I couldn't attend the NAMI annual convention in Chicago, but heard that the Leadership Institute held a valuable session on partnerships and building organizational excellence. How can I get materials and resources from that session?

A You heard right! NAMI offered a session called Building Partners in Excellence, which gave NAMI State Organization and NAMI Affiliate leaders the opportunity to learn new ways to work collaboratively in implementing the NAMI Standards of Excellence. Be sure to check out the resources from that session on the NAMI website.

Q How will I know when tools and resources listed in the NAMI State Organization Handbook
are updated or added that will help our state achieve the Standards of Excellence?

A Important updates to the NAMI State Organization Handbook will be published regularly in this bulletin. We are pleased to announce that an updated version of the NAMI Identity and Style Guide was added to the handbook just this week.

Q I missed the first issue of the NAMI News for Leaders. How can I get a copy?

A All issues of the NAMI News for Leaders are archived on the NAMI website. Our July 1 issue is available by clicking here.

Q My NAMI Affiliate wants to get a jump-start on the affiliation process with NAMI. Where can we find a list of the requirements for affiliation?

A Although more details on the affiliation process will be sent out in October, it is a great idea to begin collecting your documentation and other materials early. A copy of the requirements for affiliation are found in the NAMI Standards of Excellence andalso available by clicking here.

Here are a few of the types of questions they receive! NAMI and NAMI North Carolina are here to help - so be sure to give us a call or email when you have a question about the Standards of Excellence!

NC Center for Nonprofits

Another great resource is the NC Center for Nonprofits.  The Center the is a private, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that serves as a statewide network for nonprofit board and staff members, an information center on effective organizational practices, and an advocate for the nonprofit sector as a whole. They offer services directly to all sizes and types of 501(c)(3) nonprofits and work closely with other local, state and national groups that assist nonprofits.

As we move through the Stands of Excellence process as well as with day-to-day information - use the Center as another resource to help you with problem solving and brainstorming.

The NC Center for Nonprofits also serves as a watch dog and advocate for public policy that affects nonprofits.  Here are 2 items of interest to NAMI:

1.  Legislation Would Weaken Nonprofit Postal Discounts

A bill introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives (H.R. 2309) would scale back nonprofits' bulk-mail discount from 40% (the current discount) to 10% over the next six years. The proposal would increase nonprofit mail rates by 5% each year. This is part of legislation to restructure the U.S. Postal Service.

2.  The N.C. General Assembly has scheduled a special session for the week of September 12.
During this session, legislators could take action on several proposed constitutional amendments that would affect some nonprofits. They also could consider bills in conference committee, including a studies bill (H.B. 773) that would establish legislative studies on criteria for state grants to nonprofits (including limits on administrative expenses)
