NEW COMMITTEE MEMBERS SOUGHT
|
The HBA thrives due to the commitment of dedicated members who give their time to make association events successful. At this time, we are looking for people who would like to get more involved and try out an HBA committee.
New members are needed to keep fresh perspective and generate new ideas. We are looking for one or two more for each of the following committees: Parade of Homes, Showcase of Remodeled Homes, and a new Fundraising Committee to begin work this summer. Also, we would value additional builders on our Membership Committee. If you are interested in serving on a committee, or just trying one out, contact Kathy at kathy@hbagta.com or call the office at 231-946-2305. |
NMC BARBECUE
The 57th annual event is slated for Sunday, May 20th. This year a drawing will be held for 2 years of tuition at NMC. Tickets are $6.00. For more information about the NMC Barbecue, call 995-1020. If you are interested in working the HBA serving line from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. that day, please call Kathy at 946-2305 or email kathy@hbagta.com.

NEW MAHB WEBSITE
MAHB has gone to a new format for our website www.buildingmichigan.org. The site will continue to undergo some changes in the weeks ahead, but the idea is to have the main page be consumer oriented. The idea is also to raise a few advertising dollars and keep our website costs down. We still have all the same member information on the site; it just won't be the main page focus. Also, members will have to login and create a new login and password for the site. Members can contact Diana Dixon at the MAHB (517) 646-2553 if they are having any difficulty logging in.

Greetings!
I just glanced at a calendar . . . after missing a couple of appointments recently and showing up a week early for another meeting! How can it be that the next major holiday is Mother's Day? Seems I just took down the Christmas decorations last week!
In spite of my oversights, we truly have been stepping up the pace at the HBA office lately. Lots of things are happening in the upcoming weeks and we hope you will consider joining us for some of the fun, the celebration and recognition.
On Monday, May 14th, we will hold our last General Membership meeting of the spring at TC Millworks. Angie and Mark Glynn will be our gracious hosts for "Subs and Suds". The Builder Forum, slated to begin at 4:30 p.m. will showcase some incredible new products available to builders and remodelers.
Also that evening, we will announce the recipients of the Outstanding Support Member, the Humanitarian/Community Leader and Emerging Leader of the year. In addition, three very deserving students will receive their HBA Scholarships. This is the last chance before the busy building season to get together and acknowledge the work of our association. To register for the event, click here.

ORR RECOMMENDS DROPPING PRE-LECENSURE EDUCATION
Lee Schwartz
MAHB, EVP
Citing the requirement as"...a barrier to entry into the occupation," the Occupational Licensing Advisory Rules Committee has recommended eliminating the requirement for applicants for a builders or M&A license to complete 60 hours of education before taking the licensing exam.
Passed by the Legislature in 2007 as part of the "Improving Professionalism" package, applicants must take at least 60 hours of approved courses consisting of at least six hours of courses in each of the following areas: the current Michigan Residential Code, construction safety standards promulgated under the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Act, business management, estimating, and job costing, design and building science, contracts, liability, and risk management, marketing and sales and project management and scheduling before being allowed to take the licensing exam.

Bill Queen, Program Coordinator for NMC's Extended Ed Services cordially invites all HBA members, friends and family to a special showing of the documentary, "Beyond the Light Switch" at NMC's Milliken Auditorium on May 2nd. Queen said, "We are excited to present this event to help our community gain the information necessary to make those decisions."

TOGETHER WE STRENGTHEN & PROTECT
|
Membership in the local, state and national association has benefits that strengthen and protect your business. Take advantage of the affinity programs through NAHB Member Advantage, MAHB Membership Pays and our local Member to Member Program along with these other options:
Networking - One of the most valuable benefits of membership is networking. Business relationships are built on trust and credibility. Members network at numerous association events with other builders, subcontractors and others doing business in the building industry.
Continuing Education - From changing codes to the ever-changing market, members owe it to themselves and their customers to educate themselves on what's new and what's necessary in the industry. Contact your local association or the national association for classes or designation programs.
Legislative - From tax increases to building code changes, results of many legislative decisions impact your livelihood. MAHB is the only statewide association representing the residential building industry at the Capitol. Are your business interests worth protecting?
Political Affairs - Who are the people that make decisions on the laws and regulations that affect your business? Contribute to Friends of Housing to support and endorse candidates that vote to support small businesses and the building industry. |
