Greetings!

Recently I read an account of a family from New England who was terribly inconvenienced by the 30+ inches of unexpected snow that fell there shortly before Halloween. Being without power or water, they were forced to find shelter in a nearby hotel. Upon checking in, the wife commented that there were apparently a lot of other storm "victims" there with "no power". At first blush, that statement was literally true. However, the husband, being a personal growth guru, took this opportunity to reframe his wife's thinking. Knowing that his wife was correct, he chose his words carefully.
"While we are without power or water, we are neither victims or powerless" he noted. What an epiphany! She took a step back and just freeze-framed for a moment - a look of incredulity on her face.
When we have hardships and challenges, the way we describe the situation can have a tremendous impact. For example, when the couple accepted the fact that they were "without power" and not "powerless", it made a significant difference. Reframing one's thinking and using words that either depersonalize it or make it less debilitating helps lessen the impact. This game of semantics is actually termed Transformational Vocabulary.
Research has shown that how one describes an event that affects them can alter their perception. If you say you're feeling lousy, even if you aren't, you probably will be soon. On the other hand, by using stronger, more positive words, like "wonderful" or "fantastic" when asked how you are, rather than "okay" or "I've been better" truly can begin to lift your spirits.
Knowing this, I thought we as building industry leaders might try an experiment . . . just to see what happens. How about the next time someone asks you, "how is business?" why not respond "Fantastic!" . . . ."Terrific!" . . . . "Wonderful!"? My hunch is you find yourself believing that it truly is, and your colleague may be inspired to do business with you, or recommend you to others because obviously you've got it all figured out! And if they ask what your secret to success is, tell 'em it's just TV!
Together, we are building a stronger Association!

WHAT TO DO TO SELL MORE CONSTRUCTION SERVICES?
During seminars, I usually refer to the need for contractors to focus on value, instead of attempting to compete on price. When you compete on value, you are able to use your innovation, which allows you to differentiate your services from that of the competition. When the construction industry competes on price, it is competing as a commodity. It doesn't matter that you don't think what you offer is a commodity or, in fact, that it isn't a commodity; if the owner is purchasing your service based on price, he thinks your product is a commodity and that is all that matters.
However, this position often causes a considerable amount of pushback from seminar attendees. They argue that prospects typically care about only price. I try to explain that what they must to do is educate the prospect. Their response to that is they don't want to listen. My answer is you are talking to the wrong people.
A recent study by the Corporate Executive Board Sales Executive Council found that many traditional sales beliefs are invalid. Their study found that most salespeople fell into one of five categories:
The hard worker (21%)
The relationship builder (21%)
The challenger (27%)
The lone wolf (18%)
The problem solver (13%)

STRATEGIC PLANNING SURVEY
The HBA leadership will be involved in a Strategic Planning session on November 30th. In order to do a better job planning, we need to know more about our members' perceptions and involvement in the association. What changes might you like to see? How can we better serve you? We won't know those answers by guessing-we need YOUR feedback. On Monday evening, November 7th, member surveys will be distributed at the door. We hope that you will take time to give us your perspective. If you prefer, you may also complete the survey online. It will be emailed the following day to all members. As an incentive for completing the survey, your name will be entered into a drawing for a $50 gift card.
