Marc Burkholder

We cordially invite you to our 2011 Fall Showcase of Remodeled Homes. This year we are featuring 7 beautiful remodeling projects which illustrate the creativity and craftsmanship of our HBA remodelers.  These building specialists will be available at each location to discuss the challenges and opportunities presented within the specific, featured project.  They will also discuss with you the products and construction techniques utilized, as well as answer any questions you may have about your future remodeling projects.

The Home Builders Association of the Grand Traverse Area, Inc. which sponsors this annual event is a professional trade association representing over 300 building specialists and the affiliated tradesmen in the Grand Traverse region.  Our HBA builders and remodelers are committed to understanding and utilizing the newest or most effective building products, construction science and technology.  However, customer service remains the cornerstone of every building project.

Thank you for visiting the 2011 Showcase of Remodeled Homes.  As always, if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact the HBA office at 231-946-2305 or visit our website at www.hbagta.com.

"PLAY IT SAFE" SEMINARS

Two valuable seminars are being hosted in the next few weeks at the HBA office.  The facilitator is Dave Humenick, MIOSHA CET.  For more information:  www.hbagta.com or click here for a registration form.

Asbestos & Lead Awareness- September 29th:  Construction trades routinely renovate and demolish buildings that were built prior to 1981.  These construction activities often result in contact with asbestos-containing materials.  General industry employers are also subject to asbestos rules and regulations.  Asbestos Awareness Training is required annually for employees whose work activities may contact asbestos-containing materials (ACM) or presumed asbestos-containing materials (PACM), but do not disturb ACM or PACM during their work activities.  Lead is found in both industry and construction, and poses a threat to all who come into contact with it.  This combined training consists of information regarding asbestos and lead and their various forms and uses.  Training also includes information on the health effects associated with asbestos and/or lead exposure.  Attendees will receive their two-hour, Class IV Asbestos Awareness certification card.

Health Standards in Construction- October 18th:  This course will help educate and make the construction manager/worker aware of some typical occupational health rules, hazards and potential health effects that are associated with the construction trades Industry.  Topics include basic Industrial Hygiene, hazard communication, lead, silica, cadmium, carbon monoxide, asbestos, noise and respiratory protection.  Students will be able to recognize potential problems with exposures and how to protect themselves with the use of engineering controls and personal protective equipment.  This is a great opportunity to ask MIOSHA questions about your work environment.

Blower Door Testing

Some of you may have heard of a blower door test but most have not and few have ever seen one done. My goal with today's column is to explain what a blower door test is, why it's important to home owners, how a test is performed and what the test results mean.

What is a blower door test?

A blower door is a large powerful variable speed fan that is installed in an adjustable fabric frame designed to be installed in a residential door opening. The fan sucks air out of the house, essentially depressurizing it. The door is equipped with a gauge (manometer) that displays the difference in air pressure between outside the home and inside the home (50 pascals of air pressure differential is typical for testing, equal to a 20 mile per hour wind blowing on all sides of the home) and the cubic feet per minute of air being exhausted from the home (CFM/50).

MAHB LEADERS TESTIFY ON FLEXIBLE CODE CYCLE BILL

lee swartzA team representing the Michigan Association of Home Builders appeared before the House Regulatory Reform Committee recently, as that panel heard testimony on HB 4561, known as the Flexible Code Cycle bill.

Lee Schwartz, along with MAHB incoming President Colin Herren and past President Don Pratt outlined the main points of the legislation and offered arguments in support of the bill. The MAHB team was introduced by State Rep. Joe Haveman (R-Holland) who is sponsoring the legislation.  Lawmakers were informed of the three major components of this important piece of regulatory reform: it gives state regulators the flexibility to update the code on a three-year or a six-year code cycle as they see fit, requires that newly developed codes not named in the bill be approved by the state legislature and not through the administrative rules process, and makes it clear that any new products and technologies that meet the specifications of the code are automatically approved in Michigan.

Opponents, led by Dow Chemical, testified against the legislation. Dow continues to insist that the legislation will create more regulatory burden and uncertainty that will inhibit its ability to introduce new products into the marketplace.  MAHB will continue to provide lawmakers with factual information that counters the arguments being advanced by the opponents of HB 4561.  The Regulatory Reform Committee is expected to conclude its hearings on the bill next Wednesday, September 21.  We continue to ask you to contact your state lawmakers and urge them to support this common sense legislation.

ASBESTOS EXPOSURE IN CONSTRUCTION

MIOSHA FACT SHEET

Asbestos refers to a group of naturally occurring minerals that can separate into microscopic needlelike fibers. The most common forms are Chrysotile, Amosite, and Crocidolite. When released into the atmosphere, the size and shape of the fibers permits them to remain airborne for long periods of time and thus contaminate the environment.

If inhaled, the fibers can cause three specific asbestos-related diseases: Asbestosis (a fibrous scarring of the lungs), Lung Cancer, and Mesothelioma (a cancer of the lining of the chest or abdominal cavity). These diseases do not develop immediately after inhalation of asbestos fibers and typically have a latency period ranging from 15 to 40 years.

Asbestos has been used in more than 3,000 different products over the last 100 years primarily because of its chemical and fire resistant properties. Common products in buildings that contain asbestos include pipe insulation, asphalt, vinyl flooring materials, ceiling tile, spray-on fire proofing, boiler wrap insulation, wall/ceiling decorative plasters, fire doors, and old electrical wire insulation.
