FAMILY FRIENDLY SUMMER CONVENTION ON MACKINAW ISLAND

MAHB cordially invites you to attend the summer convention July 20-22nd.  It promises to be full of fun, family oriented activities along with time for association business.  Lt. Governor Brian Calley and Speaker of the Michigan House of Representatives, Jase Bolger, have been invited to address the Board of Directors on the morning of July 22nd.  Participants will hear more from them about the positive tax and regulatory changes that are in the works for Michigan.

America's second national part-established three years after Yellowstone-Mackinaw Island State Park consists of over 80% of the Island's entire land mass and is open year round, free of charge.  This is a wonderful place to enjoy with family and friends.

SUMMER STAFFING

In an effort to stretch our limited resources, both Jenny and Kerry have been given a summer hiatus. They are expected to return around Labor Day. In the meantime, Kathy is doing her best to provide needed services to members. Occasionally, you will find the office closed or phones on messaging until full staffing is restored. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Greetings!

Kathy new photo

The weather was nearly perfect for the 22nd Parade of Homes & Developments hosted by our HBA from June 18-26th.  Over 12,300 attendees enjoyed this year's event which featured 17 properties.

The Association is extremely grateful to our platinum sponsor this year, TBA Credit Union.  We also owe appreciation to the dozen HBA members'  and community partners who provided Ticket Outlets.  These included TBA Credit Union, Floor Covering Brokers, VanDrie Home Furnishings, Oleson's Food Stores, TC Convention & Visitors Bureau, Brown Lumber, Pure Water Works, Twin Bay Glass, and the Traverse Area Association of REALTORS.

In addition, we wish to thank our outstanding Parade Committee, chaired by Chad Craker, C2 Enterprises, Inc. The committee members who are known during June as "Builder Buddies" included Julie Courtade, First Place Bank; George Prewitt, Fast Signs;  Dave Triplett, EPS; Junior VanDyke, Standard Kitchens and Gail Chambers, Traverse City State Bank. Sheila Lowe, Coldwell Banker Schmidt Realtors  served as committee advisor this year. Angie Glynn, T.C. Millworks coordinated all the non-profit volunteers as she has done faithfully for nearly twenty years.  To all of them we are deeply indebted. We could not host such a successful Parade without their dedicated service.

Together We Are Building a Stronger Association!

MIOSHA ADOPTS GUIDELINES

To allow the residential industry adequate time and resources to comply with the revised instruction, MIOSHA agreed recently to adopt the following guidelines for an additional six months, from June 16 through Dec. 16, 2011, for alleging violations for residential fall protection:

  • For inspections where employers are fully in compliance with the former CSHD-COM-04, MIOSHA will issue a Potential Hazard Alert (PTA) addressing the requirements of the revised CSHD-COM-04-1R1 and training. This will apply only to the first inspection during the additional six-month period.
  • For inspections where employers are attempting to comply with the revised CSHD-COM-04-1R1 by using conventional fall protection systems, however the systems are not fully in compliance; MIOSHA will issue a Potential Hazard Alert (PTA) addressing the requirements of the revised CSHD-COM-04-1R1 and training. This will apply only to the first inspection during the additional six-month period.
  • For inspections where employers are using a site-specific fall protection plan when conventional fall protection is feasible and does not create a greater hazard, MIOSHA will assist the employer in feasible methods of fall protection that could be used in lieu of the site-specific fall protection plan and issue a Potential Hazard Alert (PTA) addressing the requirements of the revised CSHD-COM-04-1R1 and training. This will apply only to the first inspection during the additional six-month period.
  • For inspections where conventional fall protection is not in place or employees are not in compliance with the former CSHD-COM-04 or another fall protection plan, MIOSHA will issue appropriate citations.
  • No citations will be issued for inspections where employers are using site-specific fall protection plans that appropriately evaluate infeasibility or a greater hazard to use conventional fall protection systems"

BETTER BUILDINGS FOR MICHIGAN

The City of Traverse City along with two local non-profits, SEEDS and the Michigan Land Use Institute has recently been awarded a grant for a pilot state wide program called "Better Buildings for Michigan". This public and non-profit partnership includes participation of Traverse city Light and Power as part of their energy efficiency work in the community. Often opportunities like this are only available in major metropolitan areas so this is a very big deal for Traverse City and tribute to the efforts of our community.

"Better Building for Michigan" uses a community approach to deliver energy efficient improvements for homes by providing access to incentives and affordable loans. The so called "Neighborhood Sweeps" are designed to use skilled local consultants and contractors and economies of scale to provide a large quantity of homes in targeted neighborhoods with energy efficient improvements. The objectives are to reduce energy consumption, improve occupant health and comfort and reduce the homes negative impact on the environment.
