PRIEST DONATES TIME, TALENT
| | |
The weather-dulled HBA sign was desperately in need of TLC. And due to the generosity of Doug Priest of Priest Painting and Wallcovering the outdoor signage got a wonderful facelift. We are deeply grateful to all the hard work that Doug and his daughter put in to making the signs bright and new again. And also, we owe appreciation to Andrew Kohlman of Signs Now for applying new HBA decals and installing the signs. Thanks to these great members for helping us out at a crucial time.

Greetings!
The rain clouds moved aside and bright skies prevailed for the majority of the day for the 140 golfers at the HBA's annual Golf Outing held at Lochenheath on June 3rd. This was by far the most successful and well-attended golf scramble in recent memory!
The association is deeply appreciative to the 2011 Golf Committee, spearheaded by staff liaison Kerry Gartland and chaired this year by Jeremy Orth of Morse Moving and Storage. The committee which included Charity Anderson of Cornerstone Title, Jim Seeley and Chris Dakoske of Chemical Bank and Shelly Brunette of Real Estate One did an outstanding job getting hole sponsors, participants and prizes. Additional assistance with the 50/50 and Raffle ticket sales was provided by Gretchen Knoblock and Carol Buck of New Leaf Interiors.
This year, the winning men's team was once again from Michigan Mobile Glass & Trim and included Randy Travis, Gary Godziewiewski, Miles Guy and Steve Stocking. The winning mixed team was from Poolside and included Mike Rodes, Brooke Rodes, Steve Gorley and Randy Centelli.
Major funding for the event was provided by Hastings Mutual. First Place Bank and Real Estate One sponsored beverage carts for the event. Fox Grand Traverse hosted a hole-in-one hole while Morse Moving & Storage provided a putting contest in advance of the shotgun start.
The HBA is grateful for these financial supporters as well as the following companies that provided hole sponsorships:

JUNE IS NATIONAL HOME OWNERSHIP MONTH
This month, the housing industry celebrates the many benefits of owning a home. Despite the downturn in the housing market, families continue to seek to achieve the American Dream of homeownership and take their place among the more than 74 million Americans that own a home.
The value Americans place on owning their home continues even through times of economic hardship. Home appreciation over the long term builds financial security for a family's future.
But the value of homeownership can be much more than financial. Owning a home can often be a lifestyle improvement, enabling a family to enjoy a neighborhood, features and other amenities that suit their present and future day-to-day activities.

FALL PROTECTION FROM THE NAHB | |
| |
Last December, OSHA rescinded its Interim Fall Protection Compliance Guidelines for Residential Construction (STD 03-00-001 - STD 3-0.1A), which had been in place since 1995. Effective Thursday, June 16, employers must provide conventional fall protection systems to protect all employees engaged in residential construction activities six feet or more above a lower level.
The new Compliance Guidance for Residential Construction will require employers to follow OSHA's Subpart M Fall Protection regulation, which allows the flexibility of using a written fall protection plan and alternative fall protection procedures when conventional systems are either infeasible or using them creates greater hazard.
Construction Safety and Health Committee Chairman Dean Mon met May 26 with Dr. David Michaels, assistant secretary of labor for OSHA, regarding the change in fall protection requirements. During the meeting, OSHA reiterated that it is holding firm on its decision to retain the June 16 deadline, which will now require residential construction employers to follow OSHA's Subpart M Fall Protection Regulation. For a full summary of the discussion, read chairman Mon's memo to the NAHB Senior Officers: OSHA Commits to Enforcement Flexibility.
In the memo, Mon indicates that OSHA has committed to drafting and sending a letter to NAHB members to alleviate their concerns over possible enforcement actions, as well as agreeing to work with NAHB to identify those instances where the use of conventional fall protection may be deemed infeasible or create a greater hazard and to correct and improve OSHA's guidance documents on residential fall protection.
Replay of Fall Protection Webinar Available
If you missed it, you can view a replay of the recent Fall Protection Webinar that prepares builders and trade contractors on how to comply with OSHA's Subpart M fall protection requirements and help guide builders on the use of a written fall protection plan.
