ALL MICHIGAN CONTRACTORS MUST COMPLETE COMPETENCY TRAINING BY MAY 31st
|
Michigan state law requires that all contractors complete at least 3 hours of continuing competency training by May 31st in order to renew their license. The training deadline is quickly approaching and the courses are vital for license renewal. Local Home Builders Associations across the state are offering continuing competency courses to ensure all contractors are able to renew their licenses. The best learning opportunity is to attend one of these in person sessions. However, if you are unable to attend in person an online tool for completing this training will be available for a few short weeks prior to the deadline.
The Michigan Association of Home Builders (MAHB) has teamed up with the Michigan Propane Gas Association to present an easy to use resource to complete continuing competency training online at www.buildingmichigan.org. Participants can watch three podcasts and can print off a certification of completion at the conclusion of the videos. This documentation must be kept on file (in case of an audit) by the participant.
There is no grace period for completing this training. If you are audited and it is determined that you have not completed your continuing competency training by May 31st, you may be required to complete 60-hours of pre-licensure training before re-establishing your license.
For a complete list of courses provided by local Home Builders Associations, information regarding online training and exactly what competency requirements are needed, visit www.buildingmichigan.org. |

Greetings!
Last Chance for a Free Meal!
I figured that would get somebody's attention . . . but in reality, this is only a fraction of what we have "cookin'" for Monday evening, May 9th. We hope that everyone will take an opportunity to join us for the last General Membership before fall. Our gracious host, Tom Bischoff of Northwood Paint & Supply will be providing the venue, food and forum that evening.
Northwood Paint & Supply is located at 1299 S. Airport Road, across the street from Family Video which is adjacent to the Cherryland Mall. We've been reminded that parking may be a slight challenge for those arriving later. Therefore, please consider parking in the strip mall west of the store or across the street in the parking lots near the video store or Sears.
The Builder Forum featuring new Pittsburgh Paint products will begin at 4:30 p.m. Networking will commence around 5 p.m. A new member orientation will be held at 5:30 p.m. that night. At 6 p.m., we will move to the spacious upper level conference room. There we will honor and celebrate the accomplishments of some very special people. Bud Hierlihy, 1972 HBA President, will be awarded a Lifetime Honorary Membership in our local association. Two special students will be awarded $3000 in HBA scholarships. And seven deserving members will be awarded national Green Building Awards.
Please join us and don't forget to register by clicking here.

TWO FALL PROTECTION SEMINARS SLATED
| |
On June 16th, the new Fall Protection legislation goes into effect. To help you better understand your obligations, our HBA intends to host two separate Fall Protection Seminars, on May 20th and again on June 30th at the HBA office. The course is free to HBA members and $15 for non-members. A registration form is available at here.
And to further clarify, please read the email from Lee below . . Please don't shoot the messenger!
I know that some of our members are quite frustrated and upset at the new fall protection rules and that, on rare occasions, that emotion could spill over into the tone of the questions they ask of the presenters at the fall protection seminars.
I'd ask you to please remind the attendees at the seminars that neither MIOHSA or the MAHB are responsible for these rules. The NAHB asked OHSA to revise these rules and we here in Michigan are stuck with what happened at the federal level. The MIOHSA CET staffers putting on these seminars are there to try and help the members and, even though they may not have all the answers, they're not the ones to be mad at.

WINDOW ON A NEW WORLD
| | |
Many in our community are aware of Paperworks Studio, a Goodwill program putting alternately-abled people to work in our region. Margaret Alexander, Director, is looking for some assistance from our HBA contractors. Her studio needs slider windows that have been discarded by contractors during building, demolition, renovation or remodel. These will be utilized to dry the paper and cards made by the "artists". The preferable window size is 39" x 75". This worthy and fabulous program is growing. If you're not aware of what they offer, check this out: Video of Paperworks Studio. If you have a donation, please contact Margaret at 995-7757 or email her at margareta@goodwillmi.org.

THE CLIFF NOTES VERSION OF THE ECONOMY
| |
Our association recently received a personal invitation from Elliot Eisenberg, Ph.D., Senior Economist of Housing Policy Research to join him on Facebook. Kathy, Maisonville, our EO knows him personally and has conversed with him numerous times about sharing his expertise with our members. Currently he writes a daily blog on the economy that is very succinct - only 70 words by his report. This "conversation" is about the economy in general, and not specifically about housing. However, if you'd like to join the conversation or "friend" him, please go to: facebook.com/elliott.eisenberg. Once on the site, just click on the "Add as a Friend" button.
Dr. Eisenberg has also graciously offered to come to Traverse City this fall. We are looking forward to finalizing arrangements with him this summer. |
