Greetings! ,

Kathy new photo

Valentine's Day was especially sweet for about 125 members of the HBA who gathered to celebrate and network at Morse Moving & Storage this past Monday.  Our gracious hosts made the most of the holiday with the red and white décor on each table, lots of sweets and a special singing tribute by the Cherry Capital Men's Chorus.

Jeremy OrthA huge thank you to Art Morse, Vice-President of Morse Moving & Storage, as well as his wife Pat for having us at their facility. A debt of gratitude is also owed to the major organizers and party hosts Wayne Wahr, Jeremy Orth and Carolyn McDonald.  Also we are grateful to the awesome efforts of Eileen Nadeau, Brandon Waldron, Debbie Stoneman and Dave Lewis, General Manager from Mt. Pleasant.  This dedicated team of professionals took time from their busy schedules to call every member of the association.  What an outstanding effort on behalf of the industry!

Mens ChorusThe Builder Forum, facilitated by HBA past-president and Code Guru, Roger Papineau was a standing room only event.  Over 40 contractors packed the makeshift conference room at the back of the warehouse to learn about how the 2009 MRC and MUEC will impact their future projects. Two in depth seminars on the topic are also being offered at the association on March 3rd and 4th.  For registration for Cook-Out and Codes, click here.

Congratulations to Ray Franks of Heartwood Construction for winning the $25 Visa gift card, an incentive offered to those who registered for the event on line.

EXPO 2011 OFFERS WHEEL OF DREAMS

EXPO Poster

The 27th annual Home EXPO is scheduled for next weekend, February 26th and 27th at Traverse City East Middle School.  This year we've created a new and exciting theme based on a "Wheel of Dreams".  In the Welcome Area, guests will find a huge wheel that they can "Spin to Win" once they have toured the show and obtained twelve vendor signatures.  .

The HBA has invested over $15,000 in EXPO advertising and promotion this year!  The EXPO Committee has distributed hundreds of flyers throughout the community, shared lots of internet communiqués, acquired ads in Grand Traverse Woman, Traverse Area Chamber News, Leelanau Enterprise, Record Eagle, as well as posted commercials on TV 7& 4, Charter, WTCM AM/FM and WCCW.  Stayed tuned this week and catch some of our upcoming live interviews about EXPO with local personalities Ron Jolly, Jack Lane and Melissa Smith.  Also, be looking for our electronic billboard on Munson Avenue near 3-Mile.

We are grateful to our promotional partner, IdeaStream for their professionalism and expertise in helping to bring this event to a whole new level.  Be sure to check out the Buy One, Get One Coupon in this week's Record Eagle or Leelanau Enterprise.  Or  PRINT THIS ONE to get into the show for half price!

ARE YOU A PROCRASTINATOR?

Did you make a resolution last month to stop putting things off?License Postcard deadlineNot to worry!  The good news is that your HBA has you covered.  If you have not yet fulfilled your 3 clock hour requirement for Continuing Competency, more seminars are scheduled at our office this spring, just prior to the deadline. While we realize there are multiple ways contractors can fulfill this obligation, we think our solution is one of the simplest.  The dates available are April 8, 9, and 27 as well as May 6 and 18th.  To register go to our website at www.hbagta.com or CLICK HERE  for a registration form.  Seating at each session is limited.

RRP CLASSES COUNT TOWARD SAFETY REQUIREMENT

I was informed recently that a private proprietary school, Builders License Training Institute, has allegedly been telling builders taking their EPA Lead RRP class that it would not count toward the safety portion of the state's continuing competency requirements. This proprietary school also offers a separate safety class for continuing competency for which builders would pay a separate fee.

Last summer in May and June I met with the Bureau in regards to what would and wouldn't count towards the continuing education requirements.  As a result of that meeting, the EPA lead RRP classes will count toward the safety portion of continuing competency.

In fact, here is the section of the rules dealing with this issue:

Rule 64. (1) Activities demonstrating continuing competency as required under MCL 339.2404b, such as courses and alternate activities, may include any of the following:

k) Mold, lead, asbestos, or other hazardous material mitigation.

If you have taken an EPA-approved Lead RRP course you have fulfilled the safety portion of the continuing competency requirements for this license cycle.

FIFTEEN AND COUNTING!

"DO BUSINESS WITH A MEMBER"

mtom discount logo

If you would like to offer a free or discounted service or product to your HBA colleagues, please complete the application you received in the mail or print another one here. You may mail it or fax it to the HBA office. There is no charge for this opportunity.  It is an exclusive member service which we will be promoting in our Tuesday Toolbox and also online throughout the year.

We are now boasting 15 member participants - you can view the list by simply clicking on the HBA Member Discount logo on any page of the HBAGTA website

In an effort to promote our "Do Business with a Member", the association has launched a new initiative called "HBA Member Discounts" that we hope will further encourage members to seek other HBA professionals when they are looking for products and services.  All HBA members were recently mailed a new HBA membership card that will serve as their "ticket" to receive these discounts and free services.  This is a local program which promises to be a lot more than a yellow pages-type advertising directory!  These offerings promise real and immediate value to HBA members.

OSHA CHANGES FALL PROTECTION REQUIREMENTS - MIOSHA TO FOLLOW SUITE

LADDERAt the request of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has withdrawn the Interim Fall Protection Compliance Guidelines for Residential Construction. They are being replaced with the fall protection regulations in OSHA standard 29 CFR 1926 Subpart M, which it less complex and allow residential construction employers some flexibility in providing fall protection systems.

This enforcement policy change will require employers to take additional steps to ensure worker safety when working six feet or more above a lower level.

HBA NOMINATED FOR CHAMBER AWARD

The HBA was pleased to receive this recentTC Chamber logo communication from the Chamber of Commerce:  Congratulations!  The Home Builders Association of the Grand Traverse Area, Inc. was nominated for the Small Business of the Year, a program of the Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce.

This means one (and likely more than one) of your customers, clients, business partners, or even employees, think you are doing something right.

The Small Business Celebration, which culminates with the naming of the Chamber's 2011 Hagerty Small Business of the Year, is a program proven to grow your business through publicity, evaluation, connections, and just plain celebrating the entrepreneurial spirit of the Traverse City area.

We are delighted to have been nominated.  So to those of you out there who thought of us - "Thank you"!   Unfortunately, we can't proceed with the application.  We are a non-profit professional trade association and don't qualify.  However, it is so nice to know someone thinks we're doing something right!
