GRANT AWARDED LOCAL HBA

Executive Officer, Kathy Maisonville, recently was notified that our HBA was awarded an MAHB Strategic Investment Grant. The HBA will receive $2369 to support two member outreach programs. The Touch System designed by NAHB will assist the staff in making personalized communication with members throughout the year. The second initiative provides funding to reach out to former members. |

Happy New Year!
Welcome to a brand new year that promises to be better than last year in many ways. There are some bright spots on the economic horizon if the recent holiday buying season is any indication. Hopefully, you've given some thought to ways to "reinvent" yourself this year and explore new opportunities to grow your business through your professional trade association.
Please join your HBA colleagues in toasting the New Year at our January 10th General Membership Meeting hosted by Floor Covering Brokers. The event will be held at their facility located at 1794 Barlow Street. Our gracious hosts have enlisted Phil's on Front to provide the hors d'oeuvres. The association will provide the adult beverages, soft drinks and water.
The Builder Forum, presented by DTE begins at 4:30 p.m. Contractors are encouraged to attend this timely presentation on the new Construction Heat Program and the Hot Tot appliance. Also, details about the new 2011 construction rebates will be shared. DTE also plans to host a drawing for an MP3 player.
A member orientation will be held at 5 p.m. for all new members who joined this past fall and any longstanding members who wish to learn more about the benefits of membership.
Networking will take place from 5-7:30 p.m. The event is free to HBA members and their guests. However, as a courtesy to our hosts, we would appreciate knowing the numbers of attendees. To RSVP, click here!

NEW HBA MEMBER DISCOUNT PROGRAM LAUNCHED

 In an effort to promote our "Do Business with a Member", the association has launched a new initiative called "HBA Member Discounts" that we hope will further encourage members to seek other HBA professionals when they are looking for products and services. All HBA members were recently mailed a new HBA membership card that will serve as their "ticket" to receive these discounts and free services. This is a local program which promises to be a lot more than a yellow pages-type advertising directory! These offerings promise real and immediate value to HBA members.
If you would like to offer a free or discounted service or product to your HBA colleagues, please complete the application you received in the mail or print another one here. You may mail it or fax it to the HBA office. There is no charge for this opportunity. It is an exclusive member service which we will be promoting in our Tuesday Toolbox and also online throughout the year.

CONSTRUCTION TRADE CURRICULUM ON CHOPPING BLOCK

 Our association at both the local and state level is privileged to work with construction trade professionals who teach our future contractors at the high school level. Unfortunately, the State of Michigan is moving away from the present Standards of Residential Construction and hands-on training. The new proposed Standards (which would begin in September, 2011) would require high school construction trades teachers to cover a wide variety of topics that are considered irrelevant by many educators. According to MAHB CEO, Bob Filka, "the new standards would require teachers to cover unionization and every sort of niche construction trade imaginable . . ." MAHB is strongly opposed to these changes primarily because the majority of the State's construction jobs come from commercial and residential arenas.

RESEARCH CENTER CERTIFIES FIRST LOCAL HOME

 Peterson Homes, LLC has earned the distinction of receiving the first National Green Building Certification in the Grand Traverse area. A letter from NAHB's Green Building Program Director was received recently highlighting the accomplishment and national designation. Max Strickland, Northern EverGreen Services, a nationally certified energy consultant served as the rater on this project. Three more projects are expected to be certified shortly. These include homes built by James Anderson Builders, Inc. and Habitat for Humanity.

NMC is proud to celebrate the dedication of the Aero Park Laboratories located at 2525 Aero Park Drive on Saturday, January 15th. This new building will be the home of NMC's Construction Technologies and Renewable Energy programs. This state-of-the-art laboratory will provide multiple learning opportunities for the community and support growing and emerging industries.
Following the opening ceremony which is slated for 9 a.m., the Regional Energy EXPO co-hosted by The Grand Vision and NMC will be held. Educational seminars will be presented and exhibits available throughout the day. The HBA Green Build Grand Traverse will have representatives at the event which is free to the public.
On January 15th, NMC in collaboration with several community partners is hosting the 2011 Regional Energy EXPO at NMC Aero Park Laboratories located at 2525 Aero Park Drive. The event will run from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. and is free to the public. Seminars of interest are being presented. for the public. These include:
10-11 a.m. Renewable Energy System Overview
11 - noon Energy Audits
12-1 p.m. Financing Renewable Energy Systems
1-2 p.m. Lighting Systems
2-3 p.m. Geothermal Systems
3-4 p.m. Feed in Tariffs - A Local Case Study
