| Greetings! ,
Happy New Year! On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff of the HBA, I want to wish you, your family and colleagues the very best for 2010.
The Association is busier than ever. This may seem counterintuitive - but it is during our industry's lulls that we reach out and attempt to serve our members to an increasing degree. The calendar over the next six weeks is packed with opportunity and we hope that you will participate in many of our offerings.
This Monday evening, January 11th, our first General Membership meeting of 2010 will be hosted by Old Mission Windows located at 395 Hughes Drive which is in the industrial park south of 3 Mile Road and Hammond Road in Traverse City. Jim Cesario has promised us a special spread for our networking night. The Builder Forum "How to be a Savvy EXPO Vendor" begins at 4:30 p.m. It is a panel of member specialists who will teach exhibitors how to get the most out of their EXPO booth. It will provide pointers on how to position your display, what tips and tricks can better engage visitors and how to enhance your follow up with your potential customers and clients. We expect this to be an extremely valuable session. Please RSVP by Friday, Jan. 15th so that our gracious hosts from Old Mission can better plan our networking night.
February is fast approaching and with it comes a number of significant professional development opportunities. Unbeknownst to many of you two incredible programs are being planned and executed by our Green Build Grand Traverse Committee. Partnering with NMC's Extended Ed, this group of talented professionals will teach a 4-week class, "Green Remodeling and Retrofitting for the Homeowner". The classes are on Tuesday evenings, Feb. 2-23 from 7-9 p.m. Students will be able to bring proposed or ongoing remodeling projects and receive guidance on how to increase energy efficiency and take advantage of some of the many tax benefits. Information and registration forms are available here.
This same dedicated group has organized a fabulous two-day conference, Grand Traverse Green 2010-Sustainable Solutions Making Dollar$ and $ense which will be held at the Hagerty Center on February 5th and 6th. Our association is also partnering with our good friends at TAAR, NMC, and Michigan Green Consortium. Sponsorship has already been afforded through the generosity of Dow Building Products, DTE Energy and AIA Michigan.
The Friday evening program is intended for the general public as well building professionals. It will offer numerous vendor displays plus a keynote address by Stephen Hamstra, PE, HBDP, LEED AP, CGD, Executive Vice President of GMB Architects & Engineers. Saturday's workshops are designed for contractors, remodelers, building inspectors, bankers, architects, REALTORS® and any other professionals who would benefit from a broader understanding of the green market. For more information or to register, click here.
Together, we are building a stronger association!

HOUSING REHAB PARTNERSHIP LAUNCHED |
|
|
|
Northwest Michigan is often referred to as "God's Country", but for many families it is anything but pleasant to live here. Poverty and homelessness do exist in our area even when some of the families have a source of income. Just as appalling as the poverty is the housing situation for many. Rental properties that these folks can afford are often extremely unsuitable structures or have astronomical heating costs due to the disrepair of lack of a quality building envelope.
The Traverse Area Association of REALTORS® in partnership with the Home Builders Association of Grand Traverse Area, Inc. and Habitat for Humanity plan to change such living conditions for a family from our area.
These organizations are sponsoring a home renovation project hopefully to be commenced during 2010. In order to meet our goal of providing a safe, economically feasible home for one family we need to raise $80,000.00 in a combination of cash, material and labor donations.
On February 12, 2010 a Valentine's Weekend fundraising dinner will be held at the Williamsburg Dinner Theatre. We need donations to help ensure the success of the event.
The program includes a fabulous dinner, an "Oldies But Goodies" musical show and an auction. Please consider making a donation to fill our raffle and auction tables. Your donations are tax deductible and appropriate documentation will be provided to you for your tax records. If you are interested in attending this event, tickets are available for $55 per person or $100 for two. Checks should be made payable to "Habitat for Humanity".
Please contact any of our committee members for additional information, donations and tickets.
