SENATE HEALTH CARE BILL THREATENS HOME BUILDERS |
Regardless of how you feel about health care reform, the measure now being considered by the US Senate has unfairly singled out home builders by excluding the consturction industry from the small business health care exemption contained in the bill.
Please call Senator Carl Levin at 202-224-6221 and Senator Debbie Stabenow at 202-224-4822 and ask them to vote NO on H.R. 3590 and not unfairly punish the construction industry.
In a rush to pass a massive health care overhaul before Christmas, Senate Democrats have included a last-minute provision targeting the construction industry that is certain to derail the fragile housing recovery and threaten the solvency of countless small home building firms.
In order to find the 60 votes needed to pass health care reform, a provision was slipped into the health care bill that unfairly targets small construction industry firms by mandating that they provide health insurance if they employ more than five workers. That is the same mandate required for big businesses. Meanwhile, all other small businesses - with the exception of the construction industry -- would be exempt from providing mandatory health coverage if they employ 50 workers or less.

ARE YOU AWARE OF THE NEW EPA LEAD PAINT REGULATIONS? |
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recently enacted new regulations affecting contractors performing renovation work in residential dwellings or child-occupied facilities built before 1978. This regulation is called "Lead Safety for Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP)".
Beginning in April 2010, any renovation work (including painting) done for compensation, which disturbs painted surfaces in residential dwellings or child-occupied facilities before 1978, must be performed by an EPA certified company, using persons trained in lead-safe work practices. Each job is required to have a Certified Renovator on-site to perform specific responsibilities.
To become a Certified Renovator, a person must attend an 8-hour EPA approved training course.
For those individuals who are already certified as a Lead Abatement Supervisor, or have successfully completed an 8-hour Lead-Safe Work Practices (LSWP) course and who wish to become a Certified Renovator, completion of a 4-hour supplemental training course dealing with RRP topics is required.
The HBAGTA is hosting two 8-hour RRP Courses on Tuesday or Wednesday, January 12 and 13, 2010 at the Home Builders Association Office. Cost of the course is $135 for HBAGTA Members and $165 for non-members.
LIMITED SPACE IS AVAILABLE - TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS OPPORTUNITY NOW!

RENOVATION, REPAIR AND PAINTING (RRP) RULE GRANDFATHERED COURSES |
Successful completion of some courses in lead safe work practices meet Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) Rule requirements allowing individuals who successfully complete these courses to take an EPA-accredited or EPA-authorized State-accredited refresher renovation training course in lieu of the initial renovation training to become a certified renovator for all States in which EPA operates the renovation certification program..
This list can be found at http://www.afhh.org/pol/RRP/pol_rrp_grandfathered_courses.htm
Note: Individuals who have successfully completed an accredited abatement worker or supervisor course also qualify to take the 4-hour refresher course in lieu of the initial class to become a certified renovator. 40 CFR 745.90(a)(2)

IMAGINE A MORE VIBRANT FUTURE |
Today's associations, large and small, are challenged to create new and meaningful value for members and customers. What can association leaders do to reverse this dynamic? Now is the time for our association to get more serious about the pursuit of innovation, because our association's future growth and success depends upon it.
In an effort to start the New Year off right, a special webinar featuring nationally renowned strategist Jeff de Cagna, CEO of Principled Innovations, LLC has been planned. His presentation at the National EOC Conference in Louisville last August was fantastic and Executive Officers across the country are still buzzing about it.
Please save Wednesday, Jan. 6th from 2-3:30 p.m. for this free webinar which will be held at our association office. There is no charge but the price of your time. If you are interested in attending, please email: mailbox@hbagta.com.
