| Greetings! ,
I heard something interesting at a lunch meeting the other day . . . "I choose not to participate in this recession!" How interesting to have such a positive outlook. Obviously this person has made a significant choice that will color all his personal and professional decisions in the coming months. How many of us have the wherewithal to focus on what's right with the world instead of what's wrong? Are you willing to walk to that beat of a different drummer? I am convinced that many of our woes are really unfounded fears that have grown disproportionately large and cloud our otherwise good judgment and decision making. What I propose is the next time someone wants to focus on what's wrong, regardless of the topic, respond with a message of hope or optimism. Do not bite the bait or perpetuate the negativity. I'm firmly convinced that we will feel better, people will respond more positively to us and things will improve if we are determined to color our world with a positive, optimistic attitude. At the office now, we are running ragged with all the things on our "To Do" list - but I am grateful for our busyness! Consider the alternative - nothing to do, no one to serve, no goals to accomplish - not good! I'm grateful that we are finalizing the myriad details of our 20th anniversary Parade of Homes. I celebrate that we have 18 fabulous homes to showcase this year. This is a testimony of the resilience of our local HBAGTA industry professionals and the fact that our Grand Traverse region still represents one of the finest, most desirable locations in which to live and play. Join me this month in celebrating all that is right with the world. Participate in our upcoming showcase event and honor all those who make our Parade of Homes and this industry so very special. Together we are building a stronger association and a brighter future,

Kathy

NEW FIRE SPRINKLER MANDATE THREATENS AFFORDABLE HOUSING |
|
|
Here's How You Can Help!

Last year fire sprinkler manufacturers succeeded in creating a $3-6 billion a year market with a new requirement in the national model building code requiring fire sprinklers in all new homes and townhouses. Now Michigan is considering whether to adopt this change. A hearing on compulsory fire sprinklers will be held in Lansing on Wednesday, July 22nd at the Library of Michigan.
The proposed sprinkler mandate would be a hardship for affordable housing organizations and the families they serve in Michigan. By raising the cost of the home and setting forth another barrier in the way of those facing the greatest challenges in obtaining a home, the state would be harming the mission those who are trying to increase their ability to provide simple, decent and affordable housing to families in need.
Habitat for Humanity International and Habitat for Humanity Michigan oppose mandatory sprinklers. Habitat for Humanity Michigan is sponsoring a change to remove this requirement. Your help is needed to defeat this costly and unnecessary requirement.
While sprinkler advocates claim costs of $0.50 to $2.25 per square foot, actual quotes in Michigan from sprinkler installers show costs from $4,000 to $8,000 for homes on municipal water and upwards of $15,000 for homes on wells. These cost burdens, along with the additional maintenance and service costs as well as annual inspection fees, will disproportionately affect low-income families. READ MORE>> |
