Greetings! ,
Stepping outside into the sunshine, catching the slight scent of growing things blooming, I can't help but feel hopeful. Spring always awakens my imagination about what could be - what is possible. It gives me hope! My wish is that you are also feeling hopeful and energized this month. Things appear to be picking up and folks are beginning to loosen their purse strings a bit. That is good news for our industry and especially for northern Michigan. I hope many of you will make the trek to Kalkaska on Monday evening, May 11th, to attend our last General Membership meeting before September. This event is fondly being proclaimed as "Dinner at the Dump." Hopefully, you will receive our special invitation in the mail in the next day or so! Be looking for a small trash container to arrive in your mailbox! Please RSVP by Friday, May 8th so that we can plan accordingly for your dinner. American Waste is sponsoring our May 11th event and offering a private tour for HBA members and guests at the Solid Waste Disposal plant in Kalkaska from 4-5 p.m. The plant is at 3947 US 131 North, and is located just 2 minutes north of the intersection of 72 and 131 Following the American Waste plant tour, a networking opportunity with hors d'oeuvres and a Builder Forum will be held beginning at 5:15 p.m. at Gio's Trattoria located at 2325 US 131 North. Hager is sponsoring a Builder Forum about Insulated Concrete Forms which are gaining in popularity. We hope you will consider joining Paul Kaczanowski for an informative session. Also, for those who submitted copy or artwork, advertising or layouts for the 2009 Parade of Homes plan book, proof day will be tomorrow, May 6th and Thursday, May 7th from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the HBA office. Please park on the lower level and enter through the lower level door. Each One-Reach One kicks off Monday night. This is a simple, short term membership drive that will run from May 11-18th. The big perk for those who join and their sponsors is the $100 coupon good for the Golf Outing in June. More info about both these events is in the package mailed to members today. Be looking for a very unusual piece of correspondence!
Together we are building a stronger association and a brighter future for northern Michigan.

GUIDANCE PROVIDED ON ENERGY RELATED STIMULUS FUNDS |
|
|
|
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has established a new web site to provide information on the various programs available to state and local governments under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and how they can apply for them. The money is being made available for various weatherization, energy efficiency improvement and state energy programs, but it comes with more than a few strings attached - including the requirement that contractors pay the prevailing local wage to employees and subs per the provisions of the Davis-Bacon Act. With millions of dollars in funding available for the programs, states have been scrambling to figure out what they need to do to receive the funds, particularly to adopt new energy codes. The stimulus package designated $16.8 billion for the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. Of that amount, nearly $8 billion was designated for state and local weatherization and energy efficiency efforts: nearly $5 billion for the Weatherization Assistance Program and up to $3 billion for the State Energy Program. The DOE announced on March 12 that it was releasing $780 million to jump start job creation and weatherization work and that it would be releasing more as the states demonstrate that they are using the funding effectively. The weatherization funding is being used to improve the energy efficiency of the homes of low-income families by adding more insulation, sealing leaks or modernizing heating and air conditioning equipment, at a cost of up to $6,500 per home.
Provide rebates to consumers for home energy audits or other energy-saving improvements
- Develop renewable energy and alternative fuel projects
- Promote Energy Star products
- Upgrade the energy efficiency of state and local government buildings
- Pursue other innovative state efforts to help families save money on other energy bills
For information on energy programs, e-mail Elizabeth Odina at NAHB, or call her at 800-368-5242 x8570. For more information on other state spending programs included in the stimulus legislation, contact Alex Strong, x8279. |
