Greetings! ,
Greetings! Welcome to the abbreviated version of our weekly e-newsletter. We had a little glitch with the NewsBuilder this month and were unable to send it Monday as hoped. When we finally did get it out yesterday, we found an error with one of the front page links and had to re-send it. For this, we apologize. We understand that you are inundated with electronic communication and therefore will keep our weekly remarks brief. Regardless of your political stripes, I believe that most of us are relieved that the campaign season is behind us. The message that seemed to awaken the nation was one of hope, dignity and respect for diverse opinions, values and faith. I pray now that we will turn our focus towards working together to revitalize and strengthen the foundations of our nation that have been shaken tremendously by political strife and economic crisis. Taking this to heart, let's remember that we can accomplish more together than separately. We can work together to support, grow and sustain this beautiful region of northern Michigan. However, we need to reach across the divides of provincialism and earnestly commit to supporting each other personally and lauding the value of our members' business enterprises, regardless whether they are competitors or not. Let us continue to reinforce the values of our Association and the power of energetic, enthusiastic, committed people to make a difference to our quality of life and the things we hold dear.
As always, we are building a stronger association!
Kathy Maisonville
Executive Officer

NOVEMBER 10 "BUSINESS AFTER HOURS" |
In an effort to freshen the venue of our monthly meeting format, the Public Relations Committee has suggested that we experiment with holding an hors d'ouevres night at a member's location. We did not recruit volunteers to host the event but turned to the committee itself for a "volunteer". Our first "Business After Hours" venture this coming Monday night. Denny and Kathy Lauterbach of Floor Covering Brokers have graciously offered their facility for this evening and we are grateful for their support. However, please understand that this event is intended to be an informal networking opportunity and not a promotion of the sponsor. The staff of the Waterfront will cater this event and their staff will set up and handle the evening's operations. Due to licensing laws, the Waterfront cannot sell liquor off site. Therefore, we have found ways to fund a complimentary bar that evening that will have beer, wine, soft drinks and water. Please join us for a Builder Forum on green products at 4:30 p.m. The social hour will be from 5-7 p.m. with a Member Orientation at 5:30 p.m. Drink tickets will be distributed at registration. Please RSVP to 946-2305 by Thursday afternoon (tomorrow!) or email mailbox@hbagta.com so that we can better plan for the event.
See below to print a coupon to bring a prospective member to the meeting at no charge. |

ENERGY FORUM SLATED FOR TUESDAY NOV. 11 |
Most of you should have heard by now that the 2003 MUEC (Michigan Uniform Energy Code) was put into effect on Monday morning, Oct. 27th. This law is not well understood by most. Also, many builders and architects have been caught mid way in projects that they are not certain how to complete. For those interested, a seminar on interpreting the new Energy Code will be held at the HBA office from 7:30-9:00 a.m. Roger Papineau will be our presenter. Participants will receive handouts and a comprehensive disk providing a comparison of the old and new codes. A continental breakfast will be served beginning at 7 a.m. RSVPs would be appreciated. Please call the office or email mailbox@hbagta.com to register. A small fee of $10 will be charged to all members to help defray the cost of materials.

ANNUAL AWARDS AND HOLIDAY AUCTION SLATED DECEMBER 8th |

Our December General Membership Meeting will be held at the Waterfront Conference Center on Monday evening, Dec. 8th. That night our newly elected officers will be installed. They are Victor Lisabeth, President; Rob Whims, 1st Vice President; Marc Burkholder, 2nd Vice President; BJ Stark, Secretary and Mike Farrer, Treasurer. In addition, newly elected Board Member Bill Packer will take his oath. A highlight of our December meeting is also the presentation of Annual Awards. Members will receive an electronic form in the next few weeks to submit nominees for the Distinguished Builder of the Year, Support Member of the Year, the Jim Alpers Award, the Humanitarian Award and the Emerging Leader Award. We would appreciate your help in identifying some special members who deserve to be recognized. The popular holiday auction will be held again to help support our annual scholarship fund. Any member, who has a product or service to donate, please let the HBA staff know. We would be glad to make arrangements to pick up your donation. We are looking for items that folks would appreciate receiving as holiday gifts such as tools, car services, spa packages, personal care items, sports equipment, books and artwork. Perhaps you have an item in a cupboard at home that could be "re-gifted"! We will expand our auction items this year with a number of special items that include signed sports and entertainment memorabilia for fans and collectors. These items are reasonably priced and make unique holiday gifts.
