FEATURED SERMON

Sacred Priorities

This sermon was preached by the Rev. Christopher Girata
on Sunday, September 5, 2010 and is based on Luke 14:25-33.

From our gospel lesson, Jesus says, "Whoever comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even life itself, cannot be my disciple."

When I first moved to Birmingham, I was expecting to be surprised by some of the local culture. Being a native Floridian, I certainly knew the ins and outs of sweet tea, pimento cheese, and fried ...well, fried anything. But there was one experience that taught me more about Birmingham, and perhaps the South, than any other - A shopkeeper here in town, having learned that I was working at Saint Luke's, asked me, "So, who are your people?"

A Great (Volunteer) Job With Great Benefits!

For many years, Saint Luke's has been blessed to have volunteers at the receptionist desk in Claypool Commons on Monday through Friday, in two shifts: 8:30 am to 12:30 pm and 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm. Some of our faithful volunteers are no longer available, and we need new volunteers! Perhaps you can find one morning or afternoon a month to help. If it is not a busy time at the desk, volunteers often enjoy quiet time with a book or they work on their needlepoint or knitting. We now have wi-fi, so some bring their lap top computers. Please prayerfully consider this ministry to our parish, and contact Jeanna Speegle at 802-6218 or jspeegle@saint-lukes.com for more information. You will be blessed and so will Saint Luke's!

Making Sunday Breakfast More Efficient!

Did you know that you do not have to cook breakfast on Sunday mornings? We serve a delicious hot breakfast in Graham Hall on Sunday mornings beginning at 8:30 am. This year, we are having two lines to make your time in the serving line more efficient
Did You Buy a Saint Luke's Reusable Bag?

Many of you have purchased one of the Saint Luke's grocery bags, both from the Rally Day store and from Barbara in the Clergy office. Sadly, we neglected to include the firm plastic bottom inserts which make the bags sturdier and more usable. Those inserts are available from Barbara M-F, 8:30-4:30, or call her to have one left out for you on Sundays. We apologize for the oversight! And if you have not as yet secured one or two of these attractive bags with the Saint Luke's logo and scripture verse, plenty more are still available at $2 apiece. See or contact Barbara (802-6207 or bvandergriff@saint-lukes.com).
Stewardship of Creation

When we think of reducing water usage, we don't always think about saving energy. The American Public Water Supply and Treatment Facilities consume 56 billon kilowatt hours per year. That is enough electricity to power 5 million homes for one year. Reduce water usage and save energy. Letting your faucet run for 5 minutes uses about as much energy as a 60 watt light bulb running for 14 hours.

Join a Foyer Group!

Foyer Groups are composed of eight to ten people who meet monthly, October through May for supper and fellowship. Click here to learn more and download a form so you may be placed in a group.

PASTORAL CARE

Saint Luke's Offers Grief Support Group
Beginning Monday, September 20

The burden of coping with grief and loss can be overwhelming. The process of healing can begin to take root within a caring and supportive group where each participant is encouraged to share his/her journey with others. Once again we are offering a six-week support group experience for interested adults who may be struggling with an experience of loss. The group will be facilitated by Fr. Steve DeGweck and one or more of our Saint Luke's Stephen ministers. The group will meet for six consecutive Monday evenings beginning September 20 at 7:00 pm in the Tilson Room. The group will focus on a different theme or aspect of the grief experience each week. Members will be encouraged (not required) to share their experiences and insights within a safe, supportive, and prayerful fellowship. The meetings will last no longer than ninety minutes. We will require a minimum of five participants in order to offer the group, and registration will be capped at twelve persons. To register, please contact Barbara Vandergriff (802-6207 or bvandergriff@saint-lukes.com) If you would like to know more about the group, contact the Rev. Steve DeGweck (802-6203 or sdegweck@saint-lukes.com).

REACHING OUT

Will You Help Host Our BHN Families?
We will host our BHN families again September 19-25. Look for the sign-up poster in Claypool Commons. There are a number of opportunities to help with this ministry; we especially need volunteers to spend the night.
 PreSchool Partners Coupon Books
Are Here!
Back by popular demand, our coupon books are now on sale for $20. They contain lots of great coupons including Food World, Bruno's, Zoe's, Taziki's, 32 Degrees, Chick-filA, and Mountain Brook Creamery. Please call Lella Carl at 951-5151 if you would like to purchase a book. Thanks for your support!
STAIR (Start the Adventure in Reading)
We Need You!

The Norwood Resource Center is joining with the STAIR program to begin a new tutoring site at Norwood Elementary School this fall. We will need adult and teen volunteers who wish to share a love of reading with a child. We hope to have a group of 12 children and we will need 24 tutors dedicated to meet one afternoon a week from 3:00-5:00pm. This program will begin in mid October and go through May with breaks for holidays. Each tutor goes through a two hour training and will receive the curriculum and all materials needed. This has been an amazing and rewarding volunteer experience for those involved, as you get to see your second grader grow, learn and READ throughout the school year. We are hoping that many people from Saint Luke's will be interested in this rewarding and worthwhile ministry. If a weekly commitment is too much for you right now, we also need snack volunteers and substitute tutors to fill in when a regular tutor is sick or out of town. Please prayerfully con sider this call for volunteers to make a difference to a child who does not have the advantages other children have---namely adult attention and support. Please contact us with any questions or to sign up as a volunteer.

Lend a Hand For Hands-On Birmingham Weekend, Saturday, September 11

Hands-On Birmingham is organizing a community service weekend in commemoration of 9/11. Saint Luke's will participate in this weekend by cooking and serving an evening meal on Saturday, September 11 at the Firehouse Shelter. Please help out with this parish! If you are interested in participating, please contact the Rev. Mark LaGory (951-3553) or Barbara Vandergriff (bvandergriff@saint-lukes.com or 802-6207).
 Books for Woodlawn Children

We are collecting gently used children's books for the families who use the Grace/Woodlawn Food Pantry. If you have any books appropriate for children, from preschool through sixth-grade, please bring them to the church library (located off the Commons), and place in the designated box
.
 Continue to Bring Toiletries for
Grace Woodlawn Food Bank

When you travel instead of accumulating clutter from all of those little shampoo bottles, soaps, toothpaste, etc., bring them to the church and place them in the box in Claypool Commons marked "Grace Woodlawn Food Bank." To many in our community, these "clutter" items are considered luxury items. (We can only accept items that have not been opened or used.)

We run this notice often, because the items you donate and continue to donate make a huge difference for the Woodlawn Food Bank. The budgeted amount for toiletry items has been drastically reduced due to the items you faithfully put into the box in the Commons! Thank you!
