FEATURED SERMON

Your Calling

This sermon was preached by the Rev. Mark LaGory
on  Sunday, August 22, 2010.

Nicholas Winton was a different kind of war hero. Oh sure he flew planes during World War II, but much of his time was spent behind a desk instead of in the air. Yet just before the war began, this little known Brit, courageously defied the Germans by organizing the rescue of over 600 Jewish children from German-occupied Czechoslovakia. It wasn't something he had planned to do,

PASTORAL CARE

Saint Luke's Offers Grief Support Group
Beginning Monday, September 20

The burden of coping with grief and loss can be overwhelming. The process of healing can begin to take root within a caring and supportive group where each participant is encouraged to share his/her journey with others. Once again we are offering a six-week support group experience for interested adults who may be struggling with an experience of loss. The group will be facilitated by Fr. Steve DeGweck and one or more of our Saint Luke's Stephen ministers. The group will meet for six consecutive Monday evenings beginning September 20 at 7:00 pm in the Tilson Room. The group will focus on a different theme or aspect of the grief experience each week. Members will be encouraged (not required) to share their experiences and insights within a safe, supportive, and prayerful fellowship. The meetings will last no longer than ninety minutes. We will require a minimum of five participants in order to offer the group, and registration will be capped at twelve persons. Non-Saint Luke's members are welcome to attend on a space-available basis. Registration for Saint Luke's members only will be taken until Tuesday, September 7. After that date, any remaining spaces in the group will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. To register, please contact Barbara Vandergriff (802-6207 or bvandergriff@saint-lukes.com) If you would like to know more about the group, contact the Rev. Steve DeGweck (802-6203 or sdegweck@saint-lukes.com).

STEPHEN MINISTERS: The "After" People
Stephen ministers are there...
...after the divorce papers have been served and the bottom falls out of your life.
...after the last child honks the horn, waves, and drives away-and the house seems incredibly empty.
...after you arrive home following the funeral service and the emotions you've held at bay come crashing in on you.
...after the relationship has ended but the wounds are still bleeding and painful.
...after the doctors have said, "There's nothing more we can do."
...after the door has slammed shut-for the very last time.
...after you've washed and returned the last casserole dish.
...after the phone call you'd always hoped you'd never get.
...after the nursing home director shakes your hand and says "Welcome to your new home."
...after the baby has arrived, putting more demands on you than you ever dreamed possible.
...after you find the pink slip inserted with what is now your final paycheck.
...after your family and friends have heard your story one too many times, but you still need to talk it out.
Stephen Ministers are the "After" people. We are ready to walk alongside you (or your loved ones) and provide listening, prayer, and support for as long "after" as we're needed. If you or someone you care about might benefit from an on-going relationship with a Stephen minister, call or e-mail Steve DeGweck (802-6203 or sdegweck@saint-lukes.com).
Dawson Offers Bible Study for Those Affected by Cancer

A new Bible study will be held at Dawson Memorial Baptist Church in Homewood for four weeks beginning September 12. This special study is entitled "Confronting Cancer with Faith" and is being taught by the author, Karen Allen, who is herself a cancer survivor. She will have featured speakers along with the Bible study each week for four weeks: September 12, 19, 26, and October 3. The time is 5:00 to 6:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall at Dawson. This study offers encouragement, comfort, and hope for anyone who has been impacted by cancer. Learn how to redirect a devastating illness into a faith-building opportunity. If you cannot attend the study, you might be interested in purchasing the book which is available at Barnes and Noble in The Summit, Cokesbury Christian Store in Vestavia, Little Professor in Homewood, Books-A-Million in Brook Highland/Hoover, and the Amen Corner in Pelham, among others.
No Longer Collecting Medical Equipment

Thank you to those of you who donated items to our medical equipment closet. They were put to good use and much appreciated. We are no longer collecting equipment; however, if you have items to donate, please contact Mountain Brook Baptist which serves as a collection point.

REACHING OUT

Will You Help Host Our BHN Families?

We will host our BHN families again September 19-25. Look for the sign-up poster in Claypool Commons. There a number of volunteer opportunities for this ministry, from serving a meal to setting up rooms, to spending the night. For more information, contact Kim Kimberlin at kkimberlin@peds.uab.edu

Books for Woodlawn Children

We are collecting gently used children's books for the families who use the Grace/Woodlawn Food Pantry. If you have any books appropriate for children, from preschool through sixth-grade, please bring them to the church library (located off the Commons), and place in the designated box.
STAIR (Start the Adventure in Reading) We Need You!

The Norwood Resource Center is joining with the STAIR program to begin a new tutoring site at Norwood Elementary School this fall. We will need adult and teen volunteers who wish to share a love of reading with a child. We hope to have a group of 12 children and we will need 24 tutors dedicated to meet one afternoon a week from 3:00-5:00pm. This program will begin in mid October and go through May with breaks for holidays. Each tutor goes through a two hour training and will receive the curriculum and all materials needed. This has been an amazing and rewarding volunteer experience for those involved, as you get to see your second grader grow, learn and READ throughout the school year.
We are hoping that many people from St. Luke's will be interested in this rewarding and worthwhile ministry. If a weekly commitment is too much for you right now, we also need snack volunteers and substitute tutors to fill in when a regular tutor is sick or out of town. Please prayerfully consider this call for volunteers to make a difference to a child who does not have the advantages other children have---namely adult attention and support.
Please contact us with any questions or to sign up. To learn more about the STAIR program, click here.

Lend a Hand For Hands-On Birmingham Weekend, Saturday, September 11

Hands-On Birmingham is organizing a community service weekend in commemoration of 9/11. Saint Luke's will participate in this weekend by cooking and serving an evening meal on Saturday, September 11 at the Firehouse Shelter. Please help out with this parish! If you are interested in participating, please contact the Rev. Mark LaGory (951-3553) or Barbara Vandergriff (bvandergriff@saint-lukes.com or 802-6207).

Continue to Bring Toiletries for
Grace Woodlawn Food Bank

When you travel instead of accumulating clutter from all of those little shampoo bottles, soaps, toothpaste, etc., bring them to the church and place them in the box in Claypool Commons marked "Grace Woodlawn Food Bank." To many in our community, these "clutter" items are considered luxury items. (We can only accept items that have not been opened or used.)

We run this notice often, because the items you donate and continue to donate make a huge difference for the Woodlawn Food Bank. The budgeted amount for toiletry items has been drastically reduced due to the items you faithfully put into the box in the Commons! Thank you!
