Fear Not Little Flock
This sermon was preached by the Rev. Rebecca DeBow on Sunday, August 8, 2010 and is based on Luke 12:35-40.
Several years ago, a young couple went to the
former Soviet Union to adopt a child. They
describe the squalor and the stench, but the most striking aspect of the
orphanage was the silence. The place was
filled with babies, but there was none of the sound they'd heard in the church
nursery back home, not a squeal, not a whimper.
The couple learned the babies don't cry there because infants learn to
stop crying if no one responds. All the
babies I have encountered made a lot of noise, demanding food, comfort, love. (Click here to read more) |

Join a Foyer Group!
Saint Luke's membership is over 3000 which requires three separate Sunday services. This makes it difficult to meet fellow parishioners. The Foyer Group program provides one way to answer this need. Foyer Groups composed of eight to ten people meet monthly, October through May. A group, composed of singles, couples, young and young at heart, shares an evening in a home setting with supper and fellowship. Each group establishes its own format at the first meeting. Not all can host but must be willing to co-host with one who can lend a home.

STAIR (Start the Adventure in Reading) We Need You!
The Norwood Resource Center is joining with the STAIR program to begin a new tutoring site at Norwood Elementary School this fall. We will need adult and teen volunteers who wish to share a love of reading with a child. We hope to have a group of 12 children and we will need 24 tutors dedicated to meet one afternoon a week from 3:00-5:00pm. This program will begin in mid October and go through May with breaks for holidays. Each tutor goes through a two hour training and will receive the curriculum and all materials needed. This has been an amazing and rewarding volunteer experience for those involved, as you get to see your second grader grow, learn and READ throughout the school year. We are hoping that many people from St. Luke's will be interested in this rewarding and worthwhile ministry. If a weekly commitment is too much for you right now, we also need snack volunteers and substitute tutors to fill in when a regular tutor is sick or out of town. Please prayerfully consider this call for volunteers to make a difference to a child who does not have the advantages other children have---namely adult attention and support.
Please contact us with any questions or to sign up. To learn more about the STAIR program, click here.

Stewardship of Creation
Toilets use approximately one quarter of the total water used in a home. Replacing a 3.5 gallon per flush (gpf) toilet with a 1.6 gallon model will save 10 gallons of water per person per day. Dual flush models will save even more.

Saint Martin's in-the-Pines Wii for Fun - Wii for Therapy
Saint Luke's Episcopal Church has awarded outreach grants for the past two years for Elder Technology Improvements at St. Martin's in the Pines. Last year St. Martin's purchased computers and adaptive devises for the skilled nursing home, Assisted Living facility, Independent Living apartments and 1 in each home of The Cottages. Assisted Living elders have particularly enjoyed the computers and still participate in monthly computer classes led by area students. They've learned how to use email and some are even regular Facebook users.
This year the outreach funds went to purchase Nintendo Wii's for each facility and each home in The Cottages. Wii for Fun is just that - using the wii as an activity to simply have fun. When using the wii for therapy, the game becomes part of a plan of care with a goal. The goal may be increased range of motion, increased strength of a weakened extremity, increased mental acuteness, or improved eye-hand coordination. Wii therapy at St. Martin's is still in its beginning stage and we hope to include it in more care plans soon. Mr. Thomas Harrell, who is 86 years old and living in the Reed House in The Cottages says, "It gives me a chance to do some of the things I use to love to do when I was younger - like bowling and fishing. I'm not able to do those things for real now, but the wii makes it feel like I can. It also gives me something to do when the kids come to visit. I'm always ready to challenge some of our youth volunteers to a game of bowling, and they're always ready to accept. I like it when they come to find me." The wii's have provided more than just fun for St. Martin's in the Pines elders - they provide a way for members of various generations to have meaningful interaction, improving the quality of life for all participants. St. Luke's EYC is planning on hosting a Wii Bowling Tournament in the fall and we welcome any other family, Sunday School class, or group at any time. Mr. Harrell says, "Game on!"
We are grateful for St. Luke's support over the years and welcome additional opportunities of involvement. Although we still have great financial needs in other areas of direct-patient care, we believe these initiatives will greatly impact the lives of not only our elders, but many generations to come.
For more information or to volunteer at St. Martin's in the Pines, please contact Jennifer Ray, Director of Development at 314-4204 or jray@stmartins.ws.
