FEATURED SERMON

Burdens

This sermon was preached by the Rev. Richmond Webster on  Sunday, August 1, 2010 and is based on Luke 12:13-21.

When I was child I liked to imagine what life would be like far into the future, that distant time when the dates on the calendar began with 2000's and machines would make life radically different than the one I knew, say, in 1972. Of course I was imagining those things I saw on the cover of Popular Mechanics, things like jet packs and cars that would also travel on water. I also imagined space colonies and men on Mars.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Rally Day is August 29!

Join us from 9:00 am to 10:30 am for a wonderful morning celebrating many of the parish ministries of Saint Luke's. Come to Graham Hall for a continental breakfast and lots of fun!
Back-to-School Blessing for Youth
Tuesday, August 17

The beginning of school is right around the corner. To celebrate the excitement of a new year, we will have our first annual back-to-school blessing. All youth entering grades 7 through 12, are welcome to come to Graham Hall at 7:00 am for breakfast and a prayer on Tuesday, August 17. The Saint Luke's buses will run to the junior high at 7:40. Senior high students need to make arrangements to get to the high school, but please know that there will be plenty of drivers if you need a ride. Parents are still needed to help cook the breakfast. If you are willing to help, please contact Lars at
Lporter@saint-lukes.com.

Join a Foyer Group!

Saint Luke's membership is over 3000 which requires three separate Sunday services. This makes it difficult to meet fellow parishioners. The Foyer Group program provides one way to answer this need. Foyer Groups composed of eight to ten people meet monthly, October through May. A group, composed of singles, couples, young and young at heart, shares an evening in a home setting with supper and fellowship. Each group establishes its own format at the first meeting. Not all can host but must be willing to co-host with one who can lend a home.

Stewardship of Creation

Replacing old shower heads with low flow fixtures or low flow aerators in existing shower-heads are great ways to reduce water usage. A five minute shower with a low flow aerator will use 12.5 gallons of water.
A Note From Rusty

Thank you for your kind words and prayers as I begin my term as interim rector at Saint Andrews By-the-Sea in Destin. I would love to see you any Sunday you are visiting the Gulf area and extend a special invitation to join us for our service of Holy Eucharist, beginning at 10:30 am.

Please keep me in your prayers as I embark on this new phase of service, and I will continue to pray for all of you.

    --The Rev. Maurice (Rusty) Goldsmith.

 Books for
Woodlawn Children

We are collecting gently used children's books for the families who use the Grace/Woodlawn Food Pantry. If you have any books appropriate for children, from preschool through sixth-grade, please bring them to the church library (located off the Commons), and place in the designated box.

Lend a Hand For Hands-On Birmingham Weekend, Saturday, September 11

SAINT LUKE'S YOUTH
and
APPALACHIA SERVICE PROJECT

Eleven youth and four adults participated in Appalachian Service Project (ASP) in July, 2010. We worked on two houses, one needed siding and some drywall, the other, a new roof. ASP provided supplies, tools, a construction manual and expertise, high school classrooms for dormitories, food, and some evening activities with a spiritual focus. A staff of three college students led our group and two other church groups in refurbishing several homes in Fayetteville, West Virginia.

The work was fun, and the youth had an opportunity to wield power tools and climb walls and roofs. The most meaningful aspect of our mission was meeting the family we were there to serve. In addition to daily contact on the work site, we had an evening picnic together at a local park. We were blessed to pray with a woman in great need of healing, to receive heartfelt thanks from her husband, and to play with her son, a very lonely child. I wish everyone could experience a mission trip like this one-and be rewarded with hard work, less than ideal accommodations, unexpected friendships, and a jewel in their crown!
