Luke 11:1-13

O God, the protector of all who trust in you, without whom nothing is strong, nothing is holy: Increase and multiply upon us your mercy; that, with you as our ruler and guide, we may so pass through things temporal, that we lose not the things eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. FEATURED SERMON

We Just Can't Make this Up!

This sermon was preached by the Rev. Richmond Webster on  Sunday, July 18, 2010 and is based on Luke 10:38-42.

This summer a musical is playing in Boston, a musical about baseball and racism and the fact the Boston Red Sox were the last team in the Majors to sign a black player. Reviews have been pretty good, but I noticed that one reviewer lamented the fact that the writers altered the history in order to make the story better. Specifically, one scene has the great Willy Mays trying out for the team at Fenway and being turned away . .

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Saint Luke's Hosts Bishop Search Listening Group
This Sunday, July 25
3:00 pm to 4:30 pm, Graham Hall

The Search Committee for the next Bishop of the Diocese of Alabama is sponsoring "Listening Groups" next Sunday July 25. Saint Luke's has the privilege of hosting the one for the Birmingham Area. This is an opportunity for all lay members of our Diocese to give input into our search for a Bishop. The Search Committee wants to hear what you feel are important things we should be looking for in our next Bishop. We have had similar meetings with the Clergy and with the youth. Now is your chance to be a part of this process. The meeting will be this Sunday July 25 at 3:00 - 4:30 in Graham Hall. Please come!!! You'll be finished in plenty of time to go to the 5:00 service! Invite all your Episcopal friends in and near the Birmingham area, and be sure to invite them to stay and worship with us. And as we go forward, please keep this committee and this process in your prayers . . .

Almighty God, giver of every good gift:
Look graciously on your Church, and so guide the minds of those who shall choose a bishop for this Diocese, that we may receive a faithful pastor, who will care for your people and equip us for our ministries; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE

 Children's Books for
Woodlawn Children

We are collecting gently used children's books for the families who use the Grace/Woodlawn Food Pantry. If you have any books appropriate for children, from preschool through sixth-grade, please bring them to the church library (located off the Commons), and place in the designated box.

55th Place Needs Volunteers!

The Episcopal Thrift Store in Woodlawn needs volunteers. One can volunteer from once a week to once a month or on an as-needed basis. It is lots of fun, and EVERY penny made goes back into the Woodl;awn community that is in such need! To volunteer or to learn more, contact Jim Killebrew (jjjdkill@gmail.com or 223-7200).The Episcopal Thrift Store in Woodlawn needs volunteers. Volunteer Opportunity at Saint Martin's

Saint Martin's is looking for some "angels" to help provide basic nail care for some of their assisted living residents. You do NOT have to be a manicurist - just willing to help with removing nail polish, gently filing nails, and reapplying polish. This sort of service is a gift to the residents! Volunteers are needed every other Friday, from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. To learn more, please call Claudia Reach (314-4130).

Lend a Hand For Hands-On Birmingham Weekend, Saturday, September 11

Hands-On Birmingham is organizing a community service weekend in commemoration of 9/11. Saint Luke's will participate in this weekend by cooking and serving an evening meal on Saturday, September 11 at the Firehouse Shelter. Please help out with this parish! If you are interested in participating, please contact the Rev. Mark LaGory (951-3553) or Barbara Vandergriff (bvandergriff@saint-lukes.com or 802-6207).

Laptops for PreSchool Partners

Computer training is part of the curriculum at PreSchool Partners, and they could use some gently used laptops for these classes. Please contact Lella Carl (951-5151) if you have a laptop you would like to donate to PreSchool Partners.

Returning from Vacation? Bring Toiletries for Grace Woodlawn

As you travel this summer, instead of accumulating clutter from all of those little shampoo bottles, soaps, toothpaste, etc., bring them to the church and place them in the box in Claypool Commons marked "Grace Woodlawn Food Bank." To many in our community, these "clutter" items are considered luxury items. (We can only accept items that have not been opened or used.)

OUTREACH SPOTLIGHT

Bridge Ministries

Bridge Ministries is a faith-based, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization supported by local congregations to serve the most vulnerable in our community. Located in Southside, Bridge Ministries focuses on preventing homelessness by assisting people in crisis situations to pay their rent or utility bills or to secure temporary emergency lodging.

When families living in local shelters are ready to move to permanent housing, Bridge Ministries can help with security and utility deposits. A number of its clients are referred by local hospitals and hospice services. Bridge Ministries also helps individuals to obtain dental care, eye glasses, prescription drugs and other durable medical goods. It also maintains a small pantry of non-perishable food and personal hygiene products.
Our Service Report for the month of June is an example of how we help those in need in our community. Last month alone, we assisted 118 people with food and hygiene items. Holy Apostles Episcopal Church and Mountain Brook Presbyterian donated food last month, and we used $299.85 of our funds to purchase extra food. In June, we also provided $10,071.39 in emergency financial assistance to thirty-eight people. See below:

Rent or Security Deposits 2 single people, 20 people in families $ 7,994.00
Utilities or Utility Deposits 3 single people, 13 people in families $ 2,077.39
Total $ 10,071.39

LIHEAP- Applications for Cooling Bills (JCCEO pays from their budget):
The LIHEAP heating bill season ended in early May. We have not started taking applications for the cooling season. The program director does not know if we will be able to take applications this summer.
Referrals:
In June, we assisted four people referred by the VA Medical Center, one by Children's Hospital, one by Red Cross, and one by Odyssey Hospice. Church referrals came from Canterbury United Methodist, Saint Luke's Episcopal, Southside Baptist, and Vestavia Hills United Methodist. Canterbury generously donated a baby bed for a child going home to Childersburg after a long stay in Children's Hospital. We also assisted a homeless veteran with cloths, household items, and a new microwave for his apartment. He is a double amputee, finally getting housing after being homeless for over a year.
