Sunday Lectionary Readings

July 18, 2010; Eighth Sunday after Pentecost

Amos 8:1-12    Psalm 52

Colossians 1:15-28 Luke 10:38-42

Almighty God, the fountain of all wisdom, you know our necessities before we ask and our ignorance in asking: Have compassion on our weakness, and mercifully give us those things which for our unworthiness we dare not, and for our blindness we cannot ask; through the worthiness of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God,  now and for ever. Amen.

FEATURED SERMON

Who is My Neighbor?

This sermon was preached by the Rev. Maurice (Rusty) Goldsmith on  Sunday, July 11, 2010 and is based on Luke 10:25-37.

"And just who is my neighbor," this self-righteous lawyer challenges Jesus. Expert in the Law of Moses - that is, the Torah - he wants a legal definition of "neighbor," the neighbor whom Jesus says he is to love as he loves himself.

Jesus responds with what is one of his best-known and most challenging teachings, the story that we know as the Parable of the Good Samaritan. And Samaritans, as you know, were schismatic cousins to the Jews, who regarded them as outcasts and sinners.

Stewardship of Creation

The Big Green Bus Comes to The McWane Center this Thursday, July 15!

For six years now, a group of Dartmouth students has been touring the United States every summer in a bus to spread the word about sustainability. Sounds like a contradiction, but the bus has been converted to run on used vegetable oil, and they try to minimize their footprint while maximizing their opportunities to spread the word about the small, everyday changes we can all make toward living more sustainably. The Big Green Bus will be parked at the McWane Center in downtown Birmingham on this Thursday, July 15, from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm. The Crew will be there to give tours of the bus and talk about their project and their goals. They are a bunch of engaging and energetic young people whose enthusiasm is infectious. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about how we can all help! To learn more, go to www.biggreenbus.org.

55th Place Needs Volunteers!

The Episcopal Thrift Store in Woodlawn needs volunteers. One can volunteer from once a week to once a month or on an as-needed basis. NEW Volunteer Opportunity at Saint Martin's

Saint Martin's is looking for some "angels" to help provide basic nail care for some of their assisted living residents. You do NOT have to be a manicurist - just willing to help with removing nail polish, gently filing nails, and reapplying polish. This sort of service is a gift to the residents! Volunteers are needed every other Friday, from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. To learn more, please call Claudia Reach (314-4130).

Lend a Hand For Hands-On Birmingham Weekend, Saturday, September 11

Hands-On Birmingham is organizing a community service weekend in commemoration of 9/11. Saint Luke's will participate in this weekend by cooking and serving an evening meal on Saturday, September 11 at the Firehouse Shelter. Please help out with this parish! If you are interested in participating, please contact the Rev. Mark LaGory (951-3553) or Barbara Vandergriff (bvandergriff@saint-lukes.com or 802-6207).

Laptops for PreSchool Partners

Computer training is part of the curriculum at PreSchool Partners, and they could use some gently used laptops for these classes. Please contact Lella Carl (951-5151) if you have a laptop you would like to donate to PreSchool Partners.

Returning from Vacation? Bring Toiletries for Grace Woodlawn

As you travel this summer, instead of accumulating clutter from all of those little shampoo bottles, soaps, toothpaste, etc., bring them to the church and place them in the box in Claypool Commons marked "Grace Woodlawn Food Bank." To many in our community, these "clutter" items are considered luxury items. (We can only accept items that have not been opened or used.)

OUTREACH SPOTLIGHT

M-Power Ministries

M-POWER Ministries has been regarded by some as "Birmingham's best-kept secret." At first, we took it as a compliment. After more than ten years of service, though, we realize that we must do our part to educate the community on M-POWER's vital work.

Established in 1998 as an ecumenical social service ministry in the Avondale neighborhood of Birmingham, M-POWER provides opportunities for people to break the cycle of poverty through education and health services through the following programs:

M-POWER Health Center -

the only completely free medical and dental clinic in Jefferson County. Volunteer medical professionals and even those without medical backgrounds staff the clinic, allowing us to serve more than 3,000 patients a year. With statistics suggesting that there are approximately 70,000 adults in the county without access to basic medical care, we are working to be the hands and feet of Christ to those seeking medical care. If you are interested in volunteering, email Betty (betty.mcculloch@mpowerministries.org).

M-POWER Education Center - a unique, comprehensive

adult education pro
gram. This program combines traditional academic and vocational instruction with a holistic resource management curriculum where spiritual development is a key focus. Through the Foundation Course, GED Course, and Career-Readiness Course, men and women develop the skills and confidence to realize their goals and build a strong foundation for a hopeful future. This year, we will accept our largest class of students - up to twenty women and up to twenty men. Volunteers are needed to fulfill a variety of roles. To learn how you can get involved, email Heather Lybrand (heather.lybrand@mpowerministries.org).

M-POWER Literacy Center - the largest adult literacy program in Alabama. We provide one-to-one literacy instruction to adults who want to learn to read or improve their reading skills by training tutors, matching them with students, and then following the pair on their literacy journey. With improved skills, our students can find better jobs, read bedtime stories to their children or grandchildren, and read the Bible for the first time - with confidence! Tutor trainings are taking place in July, so email Beverly (beverly.sansom@mpowerministries.org) to register.

All of our programs exist to help people transform their lives. We are thrilled to be partners with Saint. Luke's Episcopal Church and look forward to building a stronger relationship through the years. For more information on how you can get involved with the work of M-POWER, visit us online at www.mpowerministries.org, or speak to your fellow church member, David Hufham, who serves on our Board of Directors.

God's Peace,

   Ryan Hankins, Executive Director
