FEATURED SERMON

Our Eternal Hero

This sermon was preached by the Rev. Christopher Girata on  Sunday, June 27, 2010 and is based on Luke 9:51-62.

From our gospel lesson, "When the days drew near for Jesus to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem." The opening verse of today's gospel lesson is the major turning point of Luke's gospel. Up to this verse, Jesus' activity has been focused in and around the Sea of Galilee where he has been teaching his followers. From this point onward, Jesus' story is focused on what he will do for them in Jerusalem. When Luke writes that Jesus "set his face to go to Jerusalem," Luke is emphasizing the shift that Jesus has made. Jesus has now committed to his great journey. He has committed to fulfilling his great purpose

NEW Volunteer Opportunity at Saint Martin's

Saint Martin's is looking for some "angels" to help provide basic nail care for some of their assisted living residents. You do NOT have to be a manicurist - just willing to help with removing nail polish, gently filing nails, and reapplying polish. This sort of service is a gift to the residents! Volunteers are needed every other Friday, from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. To learn more, please call Claudia Reach (314-4130).

Parents of Rising 4k Children:

We are so excited that your children will be joining us in the fall for Children's Chapel. Please take this summer as an opportunity to introduce them to it. We encourage you to come with them a few times until they feel comfortable coming on their own. Let us know if we can help in any way.

Returning from Vacation? Bring Toiletries for Grace Woodlawn

As you travel this summer, instead of accumulating clutter from all of those little shampoo bottles, soaps, toothpaste, etc., bring them to the church and place them in the box in Claypool Commons marked "Grace Woodlawn Food Bank." To many in our community, these "clutter" items are considered luxury items. (We can only accept items that have not been opened or used.)

Stewardship of Creation

When we buy stainless steel or BPA free plastic water bottles and fill them with our own filtered water, we are stopping a chain of events that can harm our planet. Plastic water bottles can be recycled, but it takes petroleum and energy to make them, and it takes energy to re-make recycled products. A home water filter is more than likely going to provide better quality drinking water, and a couple of re-usable bottles take up less space.

If you do continue to use plastic filled water bottles, please do not re-use these. They are meant for one time use only, and they leach toxic chemicals as hormone disruptors and carcinogens into the water, especially when they become warm.

OUTREACH SPOTLIGHT

 Nambian P.E.A.C.E. Mission

Dear Saint Luke's Friends,

Penny and I want to take this opportunity to thank for your continued support of our mission work in Namibia through the Saint Luke's Outreach program. I would like to share with you just one of the many programs we have been working with here and how your generosity has made it possible for this program to continue.

Toward the end of 2009 Penny and I came into contact with an organization called the Namibian P.E.A.C.E. Centre. PEACE stands for People's Education, Assistance, and Counseling for Empowerment, and its mission is to help and support the healing process for those who have been scarred by war and abuse.

We came to be associated with the PEACE centre through a partnership with the South African organization the Institute for the Healing of Memories. Led by Father Michael Lapsly, an Anglican priest who lost his hands and eye in a letter bomb attack in 1992, the Institute for the Healing of Memories works throughout the world providing workshops that help participants to begin the healing process in all aspects of their life.

Through this partnership between PEACE and Healing of Memories several workshops have been held and more have been planned. "The target constituency was mainly former soldiers from both sides of the struggle for liberation, church members, survivors and family members of survivors of gross violations of human rights, as well as some professionals from organizations also working with this target constituency." Penny and I were invited to attend a workshop in January of 2010 and were profoundly affected by listening to these experience and healed by having others listen to our journey with respect. After our workshop we recognized the value of this work and decided to help sponsor the next workshop. We donated $5000.00 to the PEACE centre to make this possible. Because of Saint Luke's generosity people in Namibia are being given a chance to move forward in their lives - healed and renewed.

As time goes on Penny and I will continue to support the work of the PEACE center through your generosity, and we cannot tell you how important your prayers continue to be as we walk the WAY in Namibia.

Peace and Blessings,

Jeremy and Penny Lucas

Making a Difference

 A Majority of One!

The piece below was published recently in the Grace Episcopal Church program notes. Their Senior Warden asked that we publish it in our Dialogue.

This past March, Senior Warden Sandra Lawler and Parish Administrator Jack Allison wrote an urgent letter to parishioners and a number of faithful friends of Grace Episcopal Church, Woodlawn. The letter was an appeal for contributions to establish an emergency fund to be used solely for building emergencies. This appeal came on the heels of a difficult year financially for the Parish that resulted in the depletion of reserve funds. Then, exacerbating an already difficult situation, there were unavoidable and unexpected expenses for repairs to our Church building, coupled with staggering utility bills for the first two months of 2010. Sandra's and Jack's appeal was consistent with our Grace Church mission to "bring the street to the altar and the altar to the street. A goal was set of $6,000 to be earmarked for the "emergency fund." Sandra and Jack pointed out that we cannot fulfil our mission to extend charitable outreach to our neighbors unless we can "maintain our altar."

One of the friends of Grace Church who received the letter was Emmy McGowin of Saint Luke's Episcopal Church. In the past, Emmy has shown her support for Grace and its outreach in a number of ways, including attending services occasionally to get a "feel" for our ministry. She has also helped with our Grace By Day Neighborhood Christmas Party and has shown her awareness and support in other ways. Emmy McGowin's response to our Grace Church appeal for emergency funds disproved the all too frequently invoked truism that "one person cannot really make a difference." Emmy got permission from Sandra and Jack to send their letter, along with her own cover letter, to some 100 of her friends. To date, well over $10,000 has been raised for Grace Church's emergency fund because Emmy McGowin cared enough to act and dared to believe that she could make a difference. We salute Emmy McGowin and her faith that by God's grace she was indeed a majority of one! Further, we salute all those friends, many if not most, of Saint Luke's congregation, who responded so generously, not only with contributions, but also with words of encouragement and support.
