FEATURED SERMON

Community of Love

This sermon was preached by the Rev. Rebecca DeBow on Trinity Sunday, May 30, 2010.

When he was about twenty years old, the famous preacher, Fred Craddock, read a book by Albert Schweitzer, called The Quest for the Historical Jesus. He didn't like the book. He found Schweitzer's ideas about Jesus woefully lacking. He portrayed Jesus as having way too much humanity and not enough divinity. Craddock marked up the book, writing all kinds of questions in the margins.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

A Word from Rusty Goldsmith

On Sunday, July 11th it will be my privilege to be the preacher for the morning services. That will probably be the last Sunday I am with you until some indeterminate time next year.

The Bishop of the Central Gulf Coast and the Vestry of St. Andrew's-by-the-Sea in Destin, Florida, have invited me, and I have agreed, to serve there as Interim Priest-in-Charge. You may remember St. Andrew's from some years ago when it was legendary in the charismatic Episcopal community. Since then, it has undergone a series of changes that have left it a smaller and more "mainline" parish.

I will conduct Sunday services there beginning August 1, and then will also spend Mondays and Tuesdays doing what rectors do, beginning September 1. My plan is to spend some full weeks in that area, and to commute to our home in the Birmingham area. Carolyn is looking forward to getting me out of the house more regularly, though of course she plans to join me in Florida from time to time. (When the weather is nice, and/or when the painting is not going well.)

This arrangement will allow me to continue portions of my ministry at Saint Luke's, for which I am most grateful. In the relatively short time I have been your "Priest Affiliate," I have come to love this wonderful community of faith and so many of you in it - especially your amazing lay leaders. I will particularly miss being a part of your beautiful Sunday worship.

I want to thank Rich for his understanding, encouragement, and flexibility. Working and worshiping with him and all your truly outstanding clergy is a great pleasure - as good a group as I have ever known.

During my time at St. Andrew's I will stay in touch from time to time through The Dialogue, as well as seeing many of you when I am home. I invite you to join us for the 10:30 service any Sunday you are in the Destin area.

In the meantime, I ask you to keep us in your prayers, and promise you that you will continue in mine. God bless us all until we meet again.

Parish-Wide VBS Event!

Wednesday, June 9 5:30 pm Graham Hall

All are invited to a fun evening to see what our children have been doing on Saddle Ridge Ranch, our Vacation Bible School program. A light supper will be served.

Remember VBS in Your Prayers!

Please remember to pray for all of our sweet children attending Vacation Bible School, from Monday, June 7 through Thursday, June 10. We pray that all of the children, those from Saint Luke's and those from outside the parish will come to know the love of Jesus more fully. Pray also for our volunteer teachers and our teen workers!

An Opportunity to Advertise in the New Saint Luke's Directory and Information Book

This summer we will put together a Saint Luke's directory and information book. Because we publish pictoral directories only every three to four years, many of our current members are not included in our current directory. The information section of this guide book will contain a yearly calendar of events, Christian Education offerings, and information on various ministries. Our plan is to update this book annually, so the information will remain current. We have contracted with Guide Book Publishers for this project.

They have produced books for numerous churches nationwide and right here in Mountain Brook. They will offer local businesses an opportunity to advertise in our Saint Luke's Guide Book. If you want to learn more about this opportuinity, please contact the Rev. Christopher Girata (cgirata@saint-lukes.com or 802-6204) or Sandy Porter (802-6210 or sporter@saint-lukes.com).

OUTREACH SPOTLIGHT

Grace By Day

Grace by Day is a volunteer ministry of hospitality located in the Grace Episcopal Church parish hall. The mission is "to help the people of Woodlawn know that God cares about them." We are delighted that again this year Saint Luke's will be helping with this mission by providing blankets for the annual Grace by Day Christmas party.

Each week-day guests attend this mid-day ministry when the parish hall doors are open for people to gather out of the rain or cold and enjoy juice and cookies in a safe, clean and friendly setting before the Community Lunch is served. Each Wednesday guests take part in an informal, volunteer led worship service.

You might like to join other Saint Luke's members by volunteering to be part of this program. Giving your time from 10:45 to 12:45 either weekly, bi-weekly, once a month or as a substitute would be a wonderful help. Other ways to serve could be to periodically update the bulletin boards. You might help with the worship center by cleaning wax from the candle sticks or stitching a simple table cover. Many volunteer to make the Christmas party joyful by baking cookies, decorating and filling gift bags, or simply being present.

If you would like to visit Grace by Day or to know more about helping, please call Jeanette Hancock @ 879-6072, Lida Hill @ 871-7790 or Chris Girata @ 802-6204.

PRESCHOOL
PARTNERS

Former PreSchool Partners Student Wins College Scholarship

In May 1997, Cynthia Taylor and her daughter, Elysia, graduated from PreSchool Partners. Elysia, who is known by the nickname of Angel, is now a senior at Carver High School. Angel maintains a B average and her favorite subject is English. She loves to write poetry and aspires to one day write a novel. Angel is a member of the Book Club, the Debate Club, the choir, and the band as well as being in the Society of High School Scholars. Angel plays trumpet in the band and is second alto in the choir. The choir at Carver High School has won many choral competitions and they consistently score superior ratings. Last year, the Carver High School Choir was number one in the nation!

Also, Angel is a member of and helped form Chosen Generation Ministries, which is a choir of community youth ages 18-24. Chosen Generation Ministries has traveled to Atlanta and Baton Rouge to sing behind well known gospel groups such as Mary, Mary, Kevin Lemons and the Higher Calling, and Ricky Dillard.

Angel will graduate on May 18th and has several choices for college. She has already received a full scholarship to Stillman College for band, but she is still considering her options. Angel has been invited to audition for choral scholarships to Jacksonville State and the University of South Alabama. Angel plans on studying nursing at college because she loves visiting hospitals and helping people. She has completed the nursing program Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA). When Angel worked with her mother with assisted living, it solidified her choice of nursing as her career. There is no doubt that Angel's future is bright!

Cynthia has continued to stay involved in Angel's education after their graduation from PreSchool Partners. She still volunteers at the schools - including at Norwood even though she no longer has a child attending school there! Cynthia is the Band Booster President and the Title One Parent Leader. Cynthia stressed the importance of staying involved, stating, "when teachers see parents are concerned for their children, they put forth the effort to help make sure the child goes to the next level. A parent's presence does make a difference!"

Angel expressed her gratitude for PreSchool Partners "because that's where her education began!" Good luck, Angel - we are so proud of you and all of your accomplishments!

Thanks!

Lella Carl

Director, PreSchool Partners

Here's What You Can Do . . .

Use earth friendly laundry detergents. There are no artificial scents, chlorine based ingredients or phosphates leaving the washing machine and going into the environment.

Use baking soda and vinegar for household cleaning. Helps stretch the dollar, too.

Hydrogen peroxide is a great bleaching agent for food stains.
