O God, who for our redemption gave your only-begotten Son to the death of the cross, and by his glorious resurrection delivered us from the power of our enemy: Grant us so to die daily to sin, that we may evermore live with him in the joy of his resurrection; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Living the Drama:
A Practical Guide to Holy Week
By the Rev. Richmond Webster
I have always maintained that in order to fully appreciate the glories of Easter we must first pass through the dark days before, and Holy Week gives the opportunity to walk in the steps of Jesus. I am excited about this year's Holy Week offering, and in particular a few new additions or adjustments to make your Holy Week experience even more special. For starters, we have added a service this year.
Our Holy Wednesday children's service is designed to give our children (ages 4k-6th grade) and their families an education and appreciation of the meaning of Easter, along the lines of our family Christmas Eve service. We will also offer parents and children a glimpse of what we do in children's chapel each Sunday morning, and during Sunday School in our Atrium.
For Maundy Thursday, we have continued our tradition of foot washing, but with a twist. This will take place in the chapel during our liturgy, and families, neighbors, and friends are all invited to both wash and be washed. Clergy will help facilitate, but we hope that members of all ages will participate together in this profound symbol of Christian love. Incidentally, foot washing is a big part of a program we offer for our youth called "Happening," so look for lots of teenagers in the chapel! We are also pleased to offer combined music from both morning and evening choirs at this service, and don't forget to sign up for the prayer vigil in the chapel overnight leading into Good Friday.
On Good Friday we will offer a reading of the Stations of the Cross immediately following the service at noon. This will be lead by our Cursillo community and all are welcome for this powerful recitation of the passion story.
On Easter Eve we celebrate the empty tomb with candles, bells, and smoke! Join us as we celebrate the first Eucharist of Easter together!
On Easter Sunday we offer four beautiful services of worship: 7:00 am, 9:00 am (with overflow in Graham Hall and a big screen), 11:15 am, and 5:00 pm. Let us keep the feast!
I look forward to seeing you at many if not all of our Holy Week offerings. Please join us on this journey we call Easter.

Perks or Purpose?
This sermon was preached by the Rev. Stephen DeGweck on Sunday, March 21, 2010 and is based on Philippians 3:8-14.
There seems no end of funny bumper stickers in America. My award for the funniest one goes to a sticker I saw about fifteern years ago. This was back in my chaplaincy days . . .

Listening Hearts Book Study
Begins Wednesday, April 7
Drawing on centuries of Christian literature and "the silence of prayerful listening," this book shows how to recognize and define God's call. It explains how to recognize and define God's call. It explains how to eliminate barriers and prepare one's heart to receive that call while remaining faithful and attentive to God's voice. It also tells how a faith community can be a source of support to those who are discerning what God is saying to them. This model of discernment is based on the popular book Listening Hearts.
Listening Hearts book-study 3 will be on Wednesday evening, 5:30 pm in the small dining room, beginning April 7 with additiional sessions on April 14, 21, May 5 & 12. Pick up your supper in Graham Hall and bring it to class in the Small Dining Room. We will have class and "break bread" together. Following class, conclude your day by attending Wednesday Night Eucharist at 6:30 pm.
Class size is limited, so please contact Rebecca (802-6202 or rebow@saint-lukes.com) to express interest. |

Grief Support Group Begins April 12
The burden of coping with grief and loss can at times be overwhelming and debilitating. Healing can begin within a caring and supportive group where each participant is encouraged to share his/her journey with others. Once again we are offering a six-week support group experience for interested adults who may be struggling with an experience of loss. The group will be facilitated by the Rev. Steve DeGweck and Betsy Smith and will meet for six consecutive Monday evenings beginning April 12 at 7:00 pm in the Tilson Room. The group will focus on a different theme or aspect of the grief experience each week. Members will be encouraged (not required) to share their experiences and insights within a safe, supportive, and prayerful fellowship. We will require a minimum of five participants in order to offer the group, and registration will be capped at twelve persons. Non-Saint Luke's members may attend on a space-available basis. Registration for Saint Luke's members only will be taken until April 1. After that date, any remaining spaces in the group will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. To register, or simply to know more about the group, call Steve (802-6203) or send him an e-mail at sdegweck@saint-lukes.com. |
More Beautiful Music at Saint Luke's!
As part of the Great Fifty Days of Easter celebration, The Saint Luke's Parish Choir will present a special musical offering. On Sunday, April 18, Franz Josef Haydn's Missa Sancti Nicolai will be sung by the Choir and vocal soloists and accompanied by organ and an orchestra of string players, oboes, and French horns. The various musical movements of the "Saint Nicholas" Mass will be interspersed throughout the 10:30 am Eucharistic Service. Come and hear Haydn on April 18!
The following Sunday morning, April 25, we will have a guest choir at the 10:30 am service. The Southern Chorale (Women's Chorus) of Birmingham-Southern College will sing the Messe Basse ("Low Mass") of nineteenth-century French composer Gabriel Faure'. They will sing some other selections during the course of the service, which will also be Stewardship of Creation Sunday. This choir will be accompanied on the organ by our Associate Organist Idabelle Gay, who accompanies this choir at Birmingham-Southern.
