By the Rev. Richmond Webster
These days I've been telling my Bible study groups that to learn the meaning of the stories we find in our Bibles we have to know the "back story," and by this I mean the larger background event coloring whatever happens day to day. This could mean the event of the exile of God's people to a foreign land, or the liberation of God's people from bondage, or, in the case of the New Testament, the reality of life in the Roman Empire. These are all "back stories" to the story at hand.
In the year 2010, we are living with a new back story. . .

Experience the Labyrinth this Lent
The season of Lent calls us to prayer, discipline, and an inward journey and reflection and self-examination. Many Christians have found blessing and renewal through the ancient spiritual practice of walking the labyrinth. The labyrinth is a series of intricate, inter-weaving pathways, laid out within a large circle. The pathways parallel our journey through life. Accompanied by soft music and a quiet, meditative atmosphere conducive to prayer and reflection, walking the labyrinth can unlock the quiet places in our hurried souls, and cause us to focus on our journey towards God. It is relaxing, satisfying, and spiritually rewarding for anyone seeking a quiet place for peace and restoration. Walking the labyrinth requires no preparation and takes typically less than 30 minutes.
You are invited to enter this world of quiet peace and prayer by walking the labyrinth at St. Luke's this Lent. The labyrinth will be set up in Graham Hall and available on Friday, February 26, from noon until 7:00 p.m., and once again on Saturday, February 27 ,from 9:00 am to noon. There is no cost, and no prior reservation is necessary. If you have questions, please call Steve DeGweck at 802-6203 or Mary Ellen Calhoun at 733-1244. |
Need Some Spiritual Food?

Do you spend much of your time caring for a loved one who is ill, disabled, or elderly? September Song
A History of Norwood
Now available is a memoir of early days in Norwood written by Bill Pogue, a former resident. It is called September Song and can be yours for a $25.00 donation to the Norwood Resource Center. These donations will enable the Resource Center to again provide free income tax preparation to members of the Norwood community. Stewardship of Creation
Pick up your Calendar this Sunday!
The Stewardhip for Creation Committee has created a calendar for YOU for the season of Lent in the hopes it can play a small part in helping you and your family members become better "stewards of creation" in this season of Lent. May this season be a time when you renew your commitment toward loving God and your neighbor, and cherishing the good earth our loving Father has given us.
Calendars are also available during the week in Barbara Vandergriff's office.
"Give us all a reverence for the earth as your own creation, that we may use its resources rightly in the service of others and to your honor and glory." --

A Word from Lars
Director of Youth Ministries
Letter to Parents
With my first month behind me, I am pleased to tell you how much I am enjoying getting to know the youth. I have mailed out a letter asking you to describe your kids to me. I want to follow up this request by offering it online. Click HERE for letter. My goal is to really get to know the young people, what drives them, and what you are most proud of. They have shown me that they are a special group with a variety of special gifts. I want to make sure that we use those gifts to the best of our ability.
Pancake Supper
Next week begins the season of Lent... But not before we go CRAZY at the Pancake Supper. Tickets are on sale and can be purchased at any time by calling me at the church, 802-6212. "This year we look forward to festive music by 'DJ Joe' and the option of a drive-thru for families that need their pancakes on the go!" We are still looking for volunteers, so contact me at lporter@saint-lukes.com if you would like to set-up, cook, clean-up, direct the drive-thru, or serve. As a reminder, all proceeds go towards our Youth Mission Trips.
Homelessness Series
In the wake of the Claypool Lecture, Same Kind of Different as Me, the Haiti disaster, and the confirmation retreat to SIFAT, we have been discussing Homelessness at EYC. The discussion has been based around our role as Christians, and we are attempting to answer the question, "Where do we begin to help?" If your kids have not been attending EYC, send them our way on Sunday and Wednesday nights. We regularly have around 30 kids. The energy, discussion, and desire to help is truly overwhelming.
Habitat for Humanity
Before our summer mission trips, we thought we would take a day to prepare. The Youth will be helping with the AL Diocese Habitat House on March 20th. This will be a great chance for anyone returning from Spring Break a few days early to serve in the Birmingham community. More details will be coming.
Summer Mission Trip Dates
Our big mission trips have been set! This summer we have two trips open to our youth. The Junior High will be serving at Urban Ministries. The Diocese refers to this program as Young People Painting Birmingham. Since we have such a large group of youth here at Saint Luke's, we will have our own week to spend at the Joe Rush Center, understanding and serving the needs of people right here in Birmingham. The dates are June 6th-11th. This trip is for rising 7th graders through rising 9th graders.
The Senior High group will go to ASP. Appalachia Service Project is an organization serving the Appalachia Region and working towards making homes safer, warmer, and dryer. The nature of this work varies, but often involves roofing, sheetrock, etc. Anything you might do at Habitat, you might do on ASP. We will leave for ASP on July 3rd and return July 11th. We are limited to 30 spots for youth, 6 female leaders, and 6 male leaders. More information and sign-up will be coming this week. This trip is for rising 10th, 11th, 12th graders and just-graduated seniors.
