November 29, 2009
First Sunday of Advent

Jeremiah 33:14-16
Psalm 25:1-9
1 Thessalonians 3:9-13
Luke 21:25-36

Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which your Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

 Clergy Thoughts
By the Rev. Stephen DeGweck

 The Gratitude Attitude

Robert Louis Stevenson once said, "The person who has stopped being thankful has fallen asleep in life." Every truly happy person I've met in my life - and by truly happy I mean filled with a sense of satisfaction, contentment, and joy. . . (read more)

Please call John Bird (870-7407) if you need more information.

Just in time for Christmas---are you looking for something uplifting to upload to your i-pod?  Look no further, the Camp McDowell CD is here and for a short-time only, all proceeds will benefit BOTH the Camp McDowell Scholarship Fund and our own Saint Luke's Day School.  The CD (recorded here at Saint Luke's, featuring Alleluia II standards and old Camp favorites) will be on sale this Wednesday night before the program and again in the Claypool Commons this Sunday before and after Sunday school.  For more information contact Chrissie Goldman (803-5245 or ceh205@hotmail.com).

PRECYCLE - Stop the Cycle Before it Starts

The time of year is upon us when our mail boxes seem to have a greater number of catalogues and just plain everyday junk mail. To get these companies to stop sending their ads is not always an easy one. Last year when Bishop Parsley spoke at one of our Wednesday night dinners, he told us how he was trying to reduce this problem at his home. By alerting the companies we reduce paper waste, production waste, pollution, etc. It might take more time to begin with by calling the companies, and yes, staying on hold awhile, but in the long run just think of the time you'll save by not having to throw all of the junk into your recycle container and the room that will be left in the container for other items. Many companies cannot be reached by telephone; here are a couple of easy web sites to stop the cycle.

OPPORTUNITIES

 Wrap Gifts to Help BHN

Birmingham Hospitality Network has two fund raisers each year, and one is the gift wrapping booth held  in the food court at Brookwood Mall. Saint Luke's is responsible for staffing the booth on December 3 and December 4. We need volunteers to sign up for two-hour slots.  NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY.  Please take a look at the slots and notify Marguerite McCowan (423.9019 or 746-7020) if you can help.
 BHN Christmas Cards

Birmingham Hospitality Network (BHN) is sellling Christmas cards. The cost is $10 for a pack of ten cards. Five different designs are available, each one created by a homeless child. The inside is blank, so you may write your own note. To order or learn more, contact Rana Cowan (bhnrc@earthlink.net or 918-0246).
 Coats And Jackets
For Grace/Woodlawn

Once again, we are collecting coats and jackets for the families who use Grace/Woodlawn food pantry. Please bring any used (clean and in good condition) coats and jackets to the closet in Graham Hall. As you enter Graham Hall from the Commons, the closet is located on the left side of the entrance. Please hang the adult coats, and place the children's coats in the marked box. All sizes of coats will be appreciated, both children's and adults. Thank you!
 Food Collection for
       Greater Birmingham Ministries (GBM)
shopping cart
The holiday season is approaching, and Greater Birmingham Ministries will be trying to respond to the needs of many families on limited or no incomes.  Those needs always exceed the resources GBM has available, but you can help by bringing in non-perishable food items for the shopping cart that will be located in the lower level of the church the first two weeks of November.  Plan to buy some extra items for the cart each time you go food shopping.  You will be making life easier for some folks who need a little help.  Many thanks!
