Clergy Thoughts
By the Rev. Christopher Girata

What are Rights?

The idea of rights has dominated the news for months regarding one very dynamic subject: health care. Yet the struggle for understanding the rights of the individual in relationship to the rights of the group (however that group is defined) has necessarily dominated the thinking within this country even before independence was declared. The idea of who gets rights and what those rights should be is obviously highly charged. Although it may be impossible, let's try not to consider the current specifics regarding rights, and try to consider rights from a broader, faith perspective. (read more)

 RECYCLE
Stop the Cycle before it Starts

The time of year is upon us when our mail boxes seem to have a greater number of catalogues and just plain everyday junk mail. To get these companies to stop sending their ads is not always an easy one. Last year when Bishop Parsley spoke at one of our Wednesday night dinners, he told us how he was trying to reduce this problem at his home. By alerting the companies we reduce paper waste, production waste, pollution, etc. It might take more time to begin with by calling the companies, and yes, staying on hold awhile, but in the long run just think of the time you'll save by not having to throw all of the junk into your recycle container and the room that will be left in the container for other items. Many companies cannot be reached by telephone; here are a couple of easy web sites to stop the cycle.

  Sponsor a Dove Tree Child!
Dove Tree
Saint Luke's Dove Tree ministry is a way to help needy children by opening your hearts, wallets, and prayer lives in a meaningful way. Parishioners who participate in the program are given a list of needs and wishes of the child; then the fun of making dreams come true begins! Without the Dove Tree program, these dear children, whose names are referred to us from Bridge Ministries, would not be able to celebrate Christmas with gifts. You may want to join together with another family, your Sunday School class, your reunion group, or another person to help share the cost.

Look for the Dove Tree table in Claypool Commons or the courtyard on Sunday mornings , or call Jennifer Boylan (999-4395 or 969-2088) or Carrie Law (879-6823).
 Wrap Gifts to Help BHN

Birmingham Hospitality Network has two fund raisers each year, and one is the gift wrapping booth held  in the food court at Brookwood Mall. Saint Luke's is responsible for staffing the booth on December 3 and December 4. We need volunteers to sign up for two-hour slots.  NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY.  Please take a look at the slots and notify Marguerite McCowan (423.9019 or 746-7020) if you can help.

Children's Ministries Sponsors Canned Food Drive and Costume Drive

The Canned Food Drive  to benefit Bridge Ministries is sponsored by Rotation Sunday School (1st, 2nd, 4th, & 5th grades) Please raid your pantries to find canned food to give to this wonderful ministry. There are containers outside Mrs. Emily's office (220) to place your goods in. The last day for drop off will be Wednesday, November 18th at the beginning of supper. Then they will be weighed and the Sunday School class with the most will win a surprise. Some suggestions of items to be donated are canned meat and fish, dried beans and peas, peanut butter, canned fruits and vegetables, powdered or canned milk, oatmeal, rice and pasta.

The Costume Drive to benefit PreSchool Partners is hosted by Third Graders. Now that Halloween is over, bring your old and outgrown costumes to give to PreSchool Partners to enjoy! You can drop these off outside Mrs. Emily's office (220) until December 6th.

 Firehouse Shelter Gala
Thursday, November 19

The Firehouse Shelter will host its Annual Gala on Thursday, November 19 at B&A Warehouse. A number of people from Saint Luke's attended last year and commented at how much they enjoyed the event.  I invite you to attend this special fund-raising gala. Tickets are $100.00 each or Corporate Tables for $800.00. You will enjoy excellent food and entertainment by various members of our local theater community, along with a Silent Auction and a few other surprises, all while assisting the Shelter to continue to make real changes in the lives of Birmingham's homeless.

Just in case you didn't know, the Firehouse Shelter plays a key role in helping people move out of homelessness.  On any given night, 180 homeless men will lay their head on a Firehouse Shelter bed.  In 2008, over 120,000 meals were provided.  93% of the men who entered The Firehouse in 2008, and whom we were able to track, left the shelter for treatment (substance abuse or mental health) or for housing (permanent or transitional).  Over 3,400 different homeless men, women and children received services from The Firehouse Shelter in 2008.  This is more than any other shelter in the state of Alabama.

For more information, please contact the Rev. Mark LaGory (307-8078 or
(mlagory@saint-lukes.com). To learn more about the Firehouse Shelter, click on http://www.saint-lukes.com/outreach_ministry_firehouse.html

 Food Collection for
       Greater Birmingham Ministries (GBM)
shopping cart
The holiday season is approaching, and Greater Birmingham Ministries will be trying to respond to the needs of many families on limited or no incomes.  Those needs always exceed the resources GBM has available, but you can help by bringing in non-perishable food items for the shopping cart that will be located in the lower level of the church the first two weeks of November.  Plan to buy some extra items for the cart each time you go food shopping.  You will be making life easier for some folks who need a little help.  Many thanks!

A Word from Missionaries
Robert and Lindsey Smith

smiths missionaries

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Greetings from the other side of the world!  Thank you for your continued support for our ministry through prayers and encouragement.  We miss you all and are having an enriching experience here.

God has truly gone out before us and prepared people to hear the message of salvation in Christ.  We have been blessed to have many opportunities to share the gospel with people from all over the world who are studying and working here: Pakistan, Zimbabwe, and the UK, to name a few.  Just the other day while Lindsey and I were eating lunch, an acquaintance walked up to us and started chatting with us.  To our surprise, this person just blurted out, "Hey Robert, I was wondering if you could tell me how I could become a Christian?"  God is truly amazing!

Keep praying for us, as the work here is not always as easy as that story may indicate.  We hope to continue to sow the Word, to train young believers, and to see many of our conversations turn into conversions for the kingdom of heaven!

We love you, and we look forward to seeing you when we get back.

In the love of Jesus Christ,
           Robert and Lindsey Smith

Robert grew up in our parish and is the son of Betsy and Ralph Smith.
