Hebrews 9:24-28
Mark 12:38-44
O God, whose blessed Son came into the world that he might destroy the works of the devil and make us children of God and heirs of eternal life: Grant that, having this hope, we may purify ourselves as he is pure; that, when he comes again with power and great glory, we may be made like him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Clergy Thoughts
By the Rev. Stephen DeGweck
The Richest Man in the Valley
There once was a rich man who loved to ride his horse through his vast estate. One day on such a ride, he came upon Hans, an old tenant farmer who had sat down to eat his lunch in the shade of a great oak tree. Hans' head was bowed in prayer. When Hans looked up, he said, "Oh, excuse me, Sir. I didn't see you. I was giving thanks for my food." "Humph!" snorted the rich man. He noticed the coarse dark bread and cheese which made up the old man's lunch. "If that were all I had to eat, I don't think I would feel like giving thanks." "Oh," replied Hans, "it is quite sufficient. But it is remarkable that you should come by today, Sir. I...I feel I should tell you, I had a strange dream just before awakening this morning." "And what did you dream?" the rich man asked Hans with an amused smile. The old man answered, "There was beauty and peace all around, and yet I could hear a voice saying, `The richest man in the valley will die tonight.'" "Dreams!" cried the rich man. "What nonsense!" He turned and galloped away. Hans prayed silently as he watched horse and rider disappear. [read more]

Candlelight Service of
Remembrance and Holy Eucharist
Thursday, November 5, 7:00 pm
Saint Luke's will offer a Candlelight Service of Holy Eucharist and Remembrance in the chapel. This service, led by the Rev. Steve DeGweck, is especially intended as a ministry to those who are mourning the loss of loved ones, and is open to member and non-member alike. The lessons, prayers, and homily will focus on the experience of loss and will lift up our hope of eternal life in Jesus Christ. The liturgy will be taken from the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer.
During the service, those desiring will be able to light a candle in memory of their loved one and as a testimony of our faith in Jesus as the Light of the World and our comforter in sorrow. Candles will be provided. No reservations are needed. For more information, call Father Steve (802-6203).

Sponsor a Dove Tree Child!
Saint Luke's Dove Tree ministry is a way to help needy children by opening your hearts, wallets, and prayer lives in a meaningful way. Parishioners who participate in the program are given a list of needs and wishes of the child; then the fun of making dreams come true begins! Without the Dove Tree program, these dear children, whose names are referred to us from Bridge Ministries, would not be able to celebrate Christmas with gifts. You may want to join together with another family, your Sunday School class, your reunion group, or another person to help share the cost.
Look for the Dove Tree table in Claypool Commons or the courtyard on Sunday mornings , or call Jennifer Boylan (999-4395 or 969-2088) or Carrie Law (879-6823).

Firehouse Shelter Gala
Thursday, November 19
The Firehouse Shelter will host its Annual Gala on Thursday, November 19 at B&A Warehouse. A number of people from Saint Luke's attended last year and commented at how much they enjoyed the event. I invite you to attend this special fund-raising gala. Tickets are $100.00 each or Corporate Tables for $800.00. You will enjoy excellent food and entertainment by various members of our local theater community, along with a Silent Auction and a few other surprises, all while assisting the Shelter to continue to make real changes in the lives of Birmingham's homeless.
Just in case you didn't know, the Firehouse Shelter plays a key role in helping people move out of homelessness. On any given night, 180 homeless men will lay their head on a Firehouse Shelter bed. In 2008, over 120,000 meals were provided. 93% of the men who entered The Firehouse in 2008, and whom we were able to track, left the shelter for treatment (substance abuse or mental health) or for housing (permanent or transitional). Over 3,400 different homeless men, women and children received services from The Firehouse Shelter in 2008. This is more than any other shelter in the state of Alabama.
For more information, please contact the Rev. Mark LaGory (307-8078 or

Food Collection for Greater Birmingham Ministries (GBM)
The holiday season is approaching, and Greater Birmingham Ministries will be trying to respond to the needs of many families on limited or no incomes. Those needs always exceed the resources GBM has available, but you can help by bringing in non-perishable food items for the shopping cart that will be located in the lower level of the church the first two weeks of November. Plan to buy some extra items for the cart each time you go food shopping. You will be making life easier for some folks who need a little help. Many thanks!
