Clergy Thoughts
By the Rev. Rich Webster
A New Director of Youth Ministries
Welcome Lars Porter!
Last Sunday, we were pleased to announce the hiring of a new Director of Youth Ministries, Lars Porter. For the past five years, Lars has been the head coach of the Men's and Women's Cross Country program at Birmingham Southern College, and for the past two years has served as a head coach for the total track program. When he accepted this coaching position he was the youngest head coach in the NCAA.
A Birmingham native, Lars attended Vestavia High School and Birmingham Southern College. He also served as Youth Minister to Vestavia United Methodist Church, one of the largest and most vibrant youth groups in the city. Lars sang in the Birmingham Boys Choir, and along with his wife Dana, currently sings in our Saint Luke's choir. They are expecting their first child any day now!
Lars has done extensive work within the Birmingham running community, from organizing 5K races to Olympic trials. He has participated in community outreach, notably the Appalachian Service Project, and Habitat for Humanity.
As Lars and I began thinking and dreaming about the possibility of his joining the Saint Luke's family, it became clear that he is a builder of programs with a coach's sensibility. As Lars puts it, 'We need to be about recruitment and retention."
Lars will begin work in January, after the finish of fall track season, and the promise for our parish is nothing short of the finest youth program in our city. He is already planning mission trips and community building activities. With the number of children already enrolled and now coming through the ranks, we desire nothing less than the best. I believe God has blessed us with Lars Porter! Please join me in welcoming Lars, Dana, and Baby Porter!

Dove Tree Sign-Up Begins Sunday, November 1!
Saint Luke's Dove Tree ministry is a way to help needy children by opening your hearts, wallets, and prayer lives in a meaningful way. Parishioners who participate in the program are given a list of needs and wishes of the child; then the fun of making dreams come true begins! Without the Dove Tree program, these dear children, whose names are referred to us from Bridge Ministries, would not be able to celebrate Christmas with gifts. You may want to join together with another family, your Sunday School class, your reunion group, or another person to help share the cost.
Beginning Sunday, November 1, please look for the Dove Tree table in Claypool Commons or the courtyard on Sunday mornings , or call Jennifer Boylan (999-4395 or 969-2088) or Carrie Law (879-6823).

Mark Your Calendar For Lessons and Carols at Sewanee
The Service of Christmas Lessons and Carols in the beautiful candle-lit chapel of the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee is an experience to remember! Once again, Saint Luke's will provide an organized bus trip for those who wish to attend the service as a group. This year's service takes place on Saturday, December 5th. The cost is $85 per person and includes tickets for reserved seating by church group, motor coach transportation to the campus, all pick-ups and drop-offs, and a catered dinner at the Sewanee Inn. We will depart around 8:30 am that morning and plan to return same day by midnight. Due to prohibitive cost increases, it was decided that staying over Saturday night was not feasible this time. We have been guaranteed thirty-five tickets, available to Saint Luke's members on a first-come, first-served basis. Your check for full payment must accompany your reservation in order for the reservation to be considered final. The group will be hosted by Mark and Mary Sue LaGory and Steve and Dawn DeGweck. Checks should be payable to Saint Luke's with Lessons and Carols noted in the memo section of you check. You may give your check to Mark, Steve, or clergy secretary Barbara Vandergriff in the Church Office. Don't delay! Make your reservations today for one of our region's most memorable holiday experiences.

Food Collection for
Greater Birmingham Ministries (GBM) The holiday season is approaching, and Greater Birmingham Ministries will be trying to respond to the needs of many families on limited or no incomes. Those needs always exceed the resources GBM has available, but you can help by bringing in non-perishable food items for the shopping cart that will be located in the lower level of the church the first two weeks of November. Plan to buy some extra items for the cart each time you go food shopping. You will be making life easier for some folks who need a little help. Many thanks!
