Almighty and everlasting God, you are always more ready to hear than we to pray, and to give more than we either desire or deserve: Pour upon us the abundance of your mercy, forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things for which we are not worthy to ask, except through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ our Savior; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Clergy Thoughts
By the Rev.Stephen DeGweck

Let Your Light Shine

A small boy sat in church one Sunday with his parents while the pastor preached a sermon about the great saints of the Bible. Wishing to help him in understanding something of what went on in church, his mother afterwards asked him what he thought a saint was. "Those guys that the light shines through," came the boy's reply. At first his parents were puzzled, until they remembered a Sunday morning not long past, when he had asked them about the stained glass windows which surrounded the congregation in the little church. "Who are those people in the windows?" he had asked. "That's St. Matthew, that's St. John. that's St. Paul, that's St. Peter, and so on, said his mother, pointing out to him the striking figures in colored glass. "He's right," his parents said to one another. "Saints are people through whom the light shines."

How very true! Saints of God in every age have been those whose faith and life were a blessing to others. "Saint" is one of the most misunderstood words in the English language. Ask most people what a saint is, and you'll get something which sounds like a one-in-a-million person who is just extra good. "My grandmother is just a saint," someone will say. What they mean is that this person is singled out from others because of an outstanding record of good deeds, or the most exemplary character, or a sterling reputation for an upright life. But most of us would nervously mumble, "Me? I'm no saint!"

The problem is with the word-saint. We think it means something we can't be, or something that embarrasses us, so we turn away, and don't listen. But there's a broader meaning to the term "saint." Did you ever notice how Paul uses this word again and again at the beginning of nearly all his letters in the New Testament? To all the "saints" who are in Ephesus, or in Thessalonica, or Galatia, etc., etc. If we're to understand who we are as God's Church, we need to understand what Paul is talking about here. Is Paul addressing just an elite few? A holy minority? Of course not. Over and over, it's clear he's speaking to the whole congregation of wherever he's writing. He's talking to us!

So just what is a saint? Well, if you confess your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, and believe that God gave his son to die for you, and have received the gift of baptism, then you are a saint-a chosen one. An imperfect chosen one, to be sure. Maybe a struggling, on-the-way, not-quite-there-yet, work-in-progess chosen one, but chosen nonetheless. You see, you and I are saints because of what God has done for us, not because of anything we have done. He loves me, and I respond to that. His grace becomes real in my life when I realize what he's done for me, when I really hear and understand the gospel, when it stops being words in a book and becomes footprints on my life, and I say "yes" to God. God's love is a light which brightens my life and lights my path. That light chases away the darkness which fills my life. And when my life shines with the brightness of God's forgiving grace, then I can become a channel for that grace to others.

As I grow in my walk with Christ, that light shines forth more and more in all my actions and relationships. It's a privilege to, as Jesus said, "let your light be seen by others." This is our calling, to be people through whom the light of Christ shines, brightening the darkness which fills so many people's lives, and driving it away with the light of Christ's forgiving presence. Is the light of Christ shining in you? Are you one of those "saints," those "guys the light shines through?"

Steve DeGweck, is especially intended as a ministry to those who are mourning the loss of loved ones,  and is open to member and non-member alike.  The lessons, prayers, and homily will focus on the experience of loss and will lift up our hope of eternal life in Jesus Christ. The liturgy will be taken from the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer.

During the service, those desiring will be able to light a candle in memory of their loved one and as a testimony of our faith in Jesus as the Light of the World and our comforter in sorrow. Candles will be provided. No reservations are needed. If you'd like more information, call Steve at 205-802-6203.

Mark Your Calendar For Lessons and Carols at Sewanee

lessons and carols

The Service of Christmas Lessons and Carols in the beautiful candle-lit chapel of the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee is an experience to remember! Once again, Saint Luke's will provide an organized bus trip for those who wish to attend the service as a group. This year's service takes place on Saturday, December 5th. The cost is $85 per person and includes tickets for reserved seating by church group, motor coach transportation to the campus, all pick-ups and drop-offs, and a catered dinner at the Sewanee Inn. We will depart around 8:30 am that morning and plan to return same day by midnight. Due to prohibitive cost increases, it was decided that staying over Saturday night was not feasible this time.

We have been guaranteed thirty-five tickets, available to Saint Luke's members on a first-come, first-served basis. Your check for full payment must accompany your reservation in order for the reservation to be considered final. The group will be hosted by Mark and Mary Sue LaGory and Steve and Dawn DeGweck. Checks should be payable to Saint Luke's with Lessons and Carols noted in the memo section of you check. You may give your check to Mark, Steve, or clergy secretary Barbara Vandergriff in the Church Office. Don't delay! Make your reservations today for one of our region's most memorable holiday experiences.

 Special Eagle Scout Ceremony
at the Norwood Resource Center

Adam Wilson (left)and John Somerall received their Eagle Scout badge on Sunday, Sept. 27, 2009.  The ceremony for this high honor was held at the Norwood Resource Center since this is where the Scouts completed their projects.  The boys built picnic tables, benches, and a raised flower bed which have beautified the Resource Center and will be something that all who use the Center can enjoy.  Several St. Luke's members attended the inspirational ceremony and Rich Webster made some remarks and led us in prayer.

The Norwood Resource Center is one of St. Luke's Outreach projects and it is wonderful to see some of our younger parishoners becoming involved.  The St. Luke's family should be very proud of John and Adam for their wonderful accomplishment (only 1 out of 100 boy scouts receive their Eagle Badge) and we give them our congratulations!

 Shades Creek Cleanup a Success!

A dozen vigorous souls from Saint Luke's Stewardship of Creation Committee, Senior Youths and Scout Troop 86 joined with 5 dozen more from across the community to pick up trash on Saturday, September 26 from Shades Creek or from South Lakeshore Drive which runs along it. Our group had the area from the Armory to Mountain Brook High School, and found more trash than our black bags could handle.

In all, the various teams cleaned for two hours or more in about 5 different areas, collecting two truckloads full of trash.  One group found the front and back bumpers of a car and one of our scouts located two hubcaps which were kept as trophies.  Father Steve didn't try to haul out the dumpster he found, and that's a good thing, because it has defied all plans to remove it for some years.  However, he did come back with so much other trash that we had to find extra bags for it.  We were amazed at the number of plastic bags caught in trees and shrubs at high-water marks, but found fewer cans and bottles than we had expected.

Participants include Dianne Mize, Chloe Kinderman, William Morris (12th birthday that day) and Austin Monaghan, Father Steve DeGweck, Jack Mize, Joyce Lanning, John Morris and Miriam Davies, Mills Nesbitt and Jake Sansom.  Thanks to scouting dad, John Morris, who brought the Alabama Power Company orange grabbers which were a big help and to Tranum who hauled the muddy creek crawlers in his red truck!

This was the 11th year that Friends of Shades Creek has held a cleanup - and hopefully Saint Luke's will be helping from now on.  A good time was had by all!

- Joyce Lanning

Living the Questions
Living the Questions is a video/ discussion series intended as an alternative to studies that supply all the answers; instead it sees faith as a journey. Facilitators, with the help of videos and a directed discussion, will create an environment where participants explore faith as a personal journey relevant to lives in the 21st century. As course materials suggest "it hopes to expose people to the ideas and concepts that have been taught and discussed for generations in our seminaries, but don't usually get discussed in churches." Living the Questions is for those yearning for something more than the shallow platitudes that often pass for theology. It's for those who want a class that encourages questions and dialogue. The class explores the best of modern theological thought in an open, accepting environment that invites people to share their thoughts and experiences safely. Each film segment is self-contained and deals with an important aspect of our faith journey. Theologians such as Borg, Brueggeman, Crossan, Fox, Kung, and others, offer their thoughts on a range of topics from reading the Bible, the life of Jesus, Paul's message, the Rapture, social justice, the reality of evil, prayer, the meaning of kingdom, etc. Founders Room, The Rev. Mark LaGory, Victor Darley-Usmar, Chris Heckemeyer, and Sandra Watson

Mark your calendars for the Day Schools 2nd Annual Trunk or Treat on Wednesday, October 28,  following dinner at 5:30pm in Graham Hall. This is a fun and safe way to allow children to "trick or treat" in a closed in and supervised area.  If you are interested in hosting a space and opening up your trunk to children, please call the Day School at 871.3453 and talk to Cheryl or TaraKy.
