Clergy Thoughts

By the Rev. Rebecca DeBow

More on Conflict and Friendship
in the Church

Love is patient. Love is kind. Love is dangerous. That isn't exactly how Saint Paul wrote it. That's how I would write it though. Love is risky business. Love will break your heart. If there is one word that sums up Jesus commands, his ministry, his death and resurrections, that word is love. The first letter of John tells us God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them. On the night he was betrayed, Jesus urges his disciples to abide in him. We know they fail to stand by him when he needs them most, they fail to love Jesus the way he loves them.

In my last reflection, I mentioned that church is a school for love. It's what we're learning how to do, how to give it and how to receive it. How are we doing, do you think? I know some folks who've had some pretty bad experiences in church. People are thoughtless or cruel; they ask too much or they don't seem to care. They are too opinionated or not opinionated enough. Church can be a painful place to learn about love. It's a school of hard knocks. If I get knocked around enough, I might give up on church. Occasionally I meet someone who tells me they've given up. One woman said she felt closer to God sitting on her deck with a cup of coffee, than at church. But to me, sitting alone on Sunday sounds lonely and sad.

When you and I share communion, we eat and drink with Jesus, with all his followers throughout all time, and with all the folks here at Saint Luke's. Strengthened by this meal, we go out to share the love we've found. I read somewhere that if I want to be close to God, I have to be close to people and if I want to be close to people, I have to be close to God. Here's another image: There are certain times in life when it seems like all we have to pull us through is our connection to the saving love of Jesus. That's the vertical dimension of faith. Then there are other periods when we rely on our relationships. That's the horizontal dimension of faith. Each is related to the other and it's no accident that vertical and horizontal together form a cross. A cross is the instrument that kills our Lord. A cross is what gives us forgiveness and eternal life. I think our human relationships must be painful to Jesus sometimes! Surely they bring him joy!

The cross reminds me of what Jesus has done for me that I can't do for myself. I'm a sinner in need of redeeming. I'm so grateful for God's grace, I try to live that gratitude. But I still manage to forget the very simple truth that God is God and I am not. You help me with my forgetfulness-by being beyond my power and control. Have you ever noticed that relatives, neighbors, friends, fellow Christians, in short, human beings, often won't do what we want them to do? I can't make people think what I want them to think either. It can be pretty frustrating. But no matter how similar we are, if we look hard enough, listen carefully enough, we'll find something we disagree about. Even if we think just alike, we can still hurt each other's feelings. You'd think, being Christian, we could avoid that sort of thing, but we can't.

In my experience the Holy Spirit works through those painful encounters with other human beings, increasing my humility and my capacity to love. People will disappoint us. I have worked in various churches for a long time now, and I've seen disappointments become agents of spiritual transformation. I know it's painful. I suspect that pruning is painful, but I understand it helps vines bear more fruit.

The night Jesus told his disciples that he was the vine and they were the branches, they disappointed him. I know there are times when I disappoint him now. Each of us is called to abide in our Lord and Savior, but the good news is-Jesus abides in us. I read that abiding has to do with persevering, continuing, lasting, staying. It's a word we hardly ever hear any more. I read that this is the "ongoing Easter miracle...that Jesus lasts, endures, continues, hangs on, holds on to us and in us." He has our hearts in his hand and he won't let go. If you are like me and you have messed up, or given up, don't be afraid. Jesus doesn't mess up and he will never give up on us. He will help us with our disagreements, especially if we ask him to send his Spirit here among us.

I give thanks to God for every one of you, for all the gifts you bring, to Saint Luke's and to me.

A Special "Pre-Season" Wednesday Night Supper and Program!
This Wednesday, August 26!

Drs. John Shuster and Scott Tully and their sons went on a medical mission to Peru over last Spring Break.  They returned with pictures and stories of Christ's love made real in a faraway place among people in need.

Following supper at 5:30, hear their experience and learn how short term mission trips can become part of anyone's ministry.  Child care will be provided for children through elementary school.  Stay for Holy Eucharist in the chapel at 7:30.

We will have a movie event for children, and nursery care will be provided until the conclusion of Eucharist.
Reservations for your children are helpful, so we know how to plan. Please contact Ashley (amonachelli@hotmail.com or 802-6221).

 Wednesday Evening Eucharist

chapel at night

Saint Luke's at Night
Begins This Wednesday,
August 26, 7:30 pm

Imagine the chapel of Saint Luke's in the early evening; chairs are in a circle, and all is dark except for the candles on a small table, located in the center of the room. Our own Shaun Pezant softly plays the piano, drifting from tunes that are sweetly familiar to new arrangements that send your soul flying. Shadows dance among the arches while the priest offers bread and wine...

This is a new experience of worship at Saint Luke's, and we are offering this service in response to the success of our Lenten worship last winter. We call it, "Saint Luke's at Night" and it all begins Wednesday, August 26, at 7:30pm, and continues each Wednesday throughout the year. Please join us and please bring a friend!

Foyer Groups!

Saint Luke's membership is over 3,000, so how can we become acquainted with one another?
Consider a Foyer Group!

A group is composed of eight to ten people who meet monthly, from October through May. It is composed of singles, couples, young, and young-at-heart who share an evening in a home setting with supper and fellowship. Each group establishes its own format at the first meeting. Not all can host, but can help co-host with one who can lend a home.

To join, complete the form found in your Sunday bulletin or on the table in the Commons. For more information, please call Mary Britton (802-6217).

Classes will focus on the Episcopal Church, Saint Luke's, and finding a ministry. Living the Questions
October 4 -December 6, 2009
Living the Questions is a video/ discussion series intended as an alternative to studies that supply all the answers; instead it sees faith as a journey. Facilitators, with the help of videos and a directed discussion, will create an environment where participants explore faith as a personal journey relevant to lives in the 21st century. As course materials suggest "it hopes to expose people to the ideas and concepts that have been taught and discussed for generations in our seminaries, but don't usually get discussed in churches." Living the Questions is for those yearning for something more than the shallow platitudes that often pass for theology. It's for those who want a class that encourages questions and dialogue. The class explores the best of modern theological thought in an open, accepting environment that invites people to share their thoughts and experiences safely. Each film segment is self-contained and deals with an important aspect of our faith journey. Theologians such as Borg, Brueggeman, Crossan, Fox, Kung, and others, offer their thoughts on a range of topics from reading the Bible, the life of Jesus, Paul's message, the Rapture, social justice, the reality of evil, prayer, the meaning of kingdom, etc. Founders Room, The Rev. Mark LaGory, Victor Darley-Usmar, Chris Heckemeyer, and Sandra Watson

At the beginning of the Sunday School year, each third-grader is presented a Bible from the church. The entire Sunday School year is devoted to teaching basic Bible stories and concepts to create a firm foundation for each child. We strongly encourage students to be present every Sunday morning as each lesson builds on the one before.

Pastoral Care Notes

"Six Simple Weeks"
A Grief Support Experience
for Saint Luke's

For many years grief support groups were a regular feature of life at Saint Luke's, but finally died off due to a perceived lack of interest and participation. This fall we are "raising the flag" again, offering a six-week group experience for interested adults who may be struggling with an experience of loss. The group will be facilitated by the Rev. Steve DeGweck and will meet for six consecutive Thursday evenings beginning September 24th at 7 p.m. in the Tilson Room.

The group will focus on a different theme or aspect of the grief experience each week and will be built upon group members sharing their experiences and struggles within a safe, supportive, and prayerful fellowship. Once again, this is a SUPPORT GROUP, not a lecture course on grief. We will require a minimum of five participants in order to offer the group, and registration will be capped at twelve persons. The burden of coping with grief and loss can at times be overwhelming and debilitating. Healing can begin within a caring and supportive group where each participant is encouraged to share his/her journey with others. To register, or simply to know more about the group, call Steve (802-6203) or send him an e-mail at sdegweck@saint-lukes.com.

Loved Ones Hospitalized?

Once again, please be reminded that your clergy make daily visits to most of the major medical centers in Birmingham. If you or a loved one is hospitalized for any reason, especially overnight, please call the Clergy Secretary Barbara Vandergriff (802-6207) so we can make a pastoral visit. Given modern "privacy" regulations, it is virtually impossible for us to find out about your hospitalization unless you let us know. Hospitals will not call us, even if you register as a Saint Luke's member. Visiting our sick in hospitals is never an "inconvenience" to your priests; it is the reason we're here! Please help us to better serve all God's people at Saint Luke's by keeping us informed of illnesses or crises that may be affecting you or those you love.

Saint Luke's Youth
Serving Others...
Our Saint Luke's youth had a very eventful summer! They spent their time at Camp McDowell, Towel Ministries, and Sawyerville Day Camp.
Saint Luke's sent thirteen youth and adults up to Valle Crucis, North Carolina to spend a week at Towel with other youth groups from Virginia.  They spent their time doing construction ministry for handicapped and elderly in the area.  Sawyerville Day Camp takes place in Hale County each summer, this year at Sunshine School in Newbern, Alabama.  Our parish was represented by eleven youth and adults who joined others from around the Diocese to serve as counselors for over 200 children and youth from the area. Both Towel and Sawyerville were great successes this summer, and some of the youth wanted to share their experiences from Sawyerville and Towel.

Douglas Logan - Sawyerville

During my first year at Sawyerville Day Camp I met amazing kids and counselors that truly changed my life. It's not the ordinary camp; it's the camp that gives the kids a shoulder to lean on and teaches the campers about our savior Jesus Christ. We don't have a month with these kids, only five days, but with those five days we try to make an impact on these wonderful kids' lives that will help them down the road. I saw Christ in everyone's eyes at Sawyerville Day Camp. Some of the campers were eager for hugs while other chose to be shy. I met one ten-year-old boy who definitely changed my life, named Bobby. Bobby came to camp on the first day very shy and didn't smile very much. I always showed him love and showed that I cared about him, even if he wasn't willing to participate. On the fourth day he started to participate, and he even sneaked in a little smile now and then. Half way through the last day he went back into his shell not even lifting his head up. He mentioned to me that he would like to talk to me, but when we made time for that all I got were head nods and occasional three word sentences. He expressed to me that he didn't feel loved which truly broke my heart. We talked, and by the end of the day I had convinced this little boy that he really was loved. I had campers who called me mom, the ones who always want to hold my hands, but sometimes the quiet ones can take you for a spin and truly change you. I know God wouldn't give me a situation I couldn't handle, but he did give me a hard one. However, both Bobby and I came out with a different view of things. God needed me to show Bobby that he truly was loved. All the children who come to Sawyerville Day Camp have stories; some are more hidden then others. Sawyerville Day Camp has changed my life and has given me some of the best memories that I will carry with me forever. I made everlasting friendships with the campers and the counselors over my time in Hale County. I would be foolish not to come back next year to Sawyerville Day Camp. If only camp could be all summer long!

Molly Shuster - Sawyerville

When I signed up for the staff of Sawyerville Day Camp, I had no idea that I was signing up for a highlight of my summer. All it seemed to be was a week-long trip with my church, spending time with some little kids, and to be honest, I was a little nervous about it all. Going through staff training really hit home for me on what an impact this camp had on these kids, and that only made me MORE nervous. What if I messed up? What if they didn't like me? But arriving at camp was something I will never forget. The staff this year was amazing. We all played to each other's strengths and helped each other out with the weaknesses, so I knew we would be a great team. And then we met the kids. All those feelings of anxiety and excitement just melted away, because these kids were so happy to be there. The staff was so happy to be there. The community was so happy to have us there.   The theme for camp was "Stand By Me", and there truly could not have been a better one. These five days of camp brought us all together, as one big family. We were all singing the same songs, playing the same games, eating the same food, together. Each and every kid was unique. They came from all over Hale County, and each staff member came from all over Alabama, but still, we came together at the Sunshine School in Newbern. I will always remember how unconditionally I love those kids, and how unconditionally they love me. The impact we had on each other is unforgettable. It was said best by Ben E. King, "no I won't be afraid, no I won't be afraid, Just as long as you stand, stand by me."

William Taliaferro - Towel Ministries

Every year I return to Birmingham in August, and I'm always asked what exactly the greatest part of my summer was.  For the past few years I've responded with Towel Ministry. Then people ask what is Towel Ministry and why is it called Towel? Towel is a mission trip to Valle Crucis, North Carolina designed to share God's love to the handicapped and elderly through good works such as painting houses, building handicap ramps, roofing, and various other house projects.  These jobs are done by hard working youth and adult volunteers from Virginia, Alabama, North Carolina, and Florida.  Each work site has around six to seven youth and three adult volunteers, and that is your work site group for the week. Now the latter question where does 'Towel' in Towel Ministries come from shall be answered.  Over twenty-five years ago, a Deacon named Chris Greer from Holy Cross, Valle Crucis started the program Towel Ministries designed to get the youth active in mission work and spreading the Gospel.  After Chris passed away the towel he wore as a deacon became the symbol for Towel Ministries.  Hence the name Towel emerged.  Towel overall is an incredible event and I strongly encourage youth like myself to go out and see for themselves, for it truly is a humbling experience and one to enjoy.

Attention Medical Personnel...
Any Used Stethoscopes?

Grace Episcopal Church's AIDS Outreach Committee and UAB's continuing medical mission to Zambia and Haiti are collecting used stethoscopes to help outfit nurses who are battling twin epidemics of AIDS and tuberculosis. Nurses in these countries work long hours for little pay and often cannot afford to buy their own stethoscopes, so they work without them. If you have a working used stethoscope, please place it in the box in the Saint Luke's library marked STETHOSCOPES, located to the left of the desk. For more information, please call Sandie Keith (970-6329).
