Clergy Thoughts By the Rev. Christopher Girata
A More Fleshy Jesus
Many Christians love to think about faith, to ponder belief, to roll nuances around and around like a rough stone in a tumbler until the finished product is smooth and polished and (dare I say) easy to believe in. Thinking about our faith in Christ - believing really, really hard - keeps Jesus comfortable. It's much harder to be challenged by a man who fits into a proper place in our life, a man who makes sense.
Yet how sensible is it for a man to tell us to eat his flesh and drink his blood? Perhaps that idea has become sterile to us - but just think about it. Think about actually eating flesh and drinking blood ...a repulsive thought, but one that strips away all our proper social norms and forces us to react in a visceral way! Jesus commands us to do something completely repulsive, completely new, completely radical, and that radical idea is just as radical as Christ himself!
Jesus is not content to stay in our minds. Jesus is not content to be rolled around, to become polished and smooth. The Jesus of scripture says that we cannot truly live unless we believe in him AND eat his flesh and drink his blood. All our good intentions at discovering the nuances of theological ideas and beliefs mean nothing without putting our feet on the ground and doing real work to realize God's kingdom on earth right now.
Jesus is always calling us to strip ourselves of the walls that separate us from true life - from truly living into our created glory as beloved children of God. When you next take communion, try to put away the sterility of the moment. Don't focus on the perfectly produced hosts and the silver chalices containing the quality port wine. Instead, imagine tearing off a hunk of bread from a big loaf while crumbs fly through the air in all directions and taking a big gulp of wine while some drips down your cheek to your chin. Imagine meeting Christ in a raw, sloppy, messy, perfect way where there are no walls between you and the One who loves you more than you can ever know. Imagine being filled, being stuffed with such food and drink that you are compelled out into the world to spread the love that is threatening to burst you from the inside unless you let it out in celebration of the unearned grace that has fallen on each and every one of you... Imagine.

A Special "Pre-Season" Wednesday Night Supper and Program!
August 26!
Drs. John Shuster and Scott Tully and their sons went on a medical mission to Peru over last Spring Break. They returned with pictures and stories of Christ's love made real in a faraway place among people in need.
Following supper at 5:30, hear their experience and learn how short term mission trips can become part of anyone's ministry. Child care will be provided for children through elementary school. Stay for Holy Eucharist in the chapel at 7:30.
We will have a movie event for children, and nursery care will be provided until the conclusion of Eucharist.

Wednesday Evening Eucharist
Saint Luke's at Night Begins August 26, 7:30 pm
Imagine the chapel of Saint Luke's in the early evening; chairs are in a circle, and all is dark except for the candles on a small table, located in the center of the room. Our own Shaun Pezant softly plays the piano, drifting from tunes that are sweetly familiar to new arrangements that send your soul flying. Shadows dance among the arches while the priest offers bread and wine... This is a new experience of worship at Saint Luke's, and we are offering this service in response to the success of our Lenten worship last winter. We call it, "Saint Luke's at Night" and it all begins Wednesday, August 26, at 7:30pm, and continues each Wednesday throughout the year. Please join us and please bring a friend!
|
Rally Day, August 30! Following the 10:30 service, all are invited to Graham Hall for a picnic style luncheon A Youth Rally will be held in the courtyard, following the luncheon!

A group is composed of eight to ten people who meet monthly, from October through May. It is composed of singles, couples, young, and young-at-heart who share an evening in a home setting with supper and fellowship. Each group establishes its own format at the first meeting. Not all can host, but can help co-host with one who can lend a home.
To join, complete the form found in your Sunday bulletin or on the table in the Commons. For more information, please call Mary Britton (802-6217).

Living the Questions
October 4 -December 6, 2009
Living the Questions is a video/ discussion series intended as an alternative to studies that supply all the answers; instead it sees faith as a journey. Facilitators, with the help of videos and a directed discussion, will create an environment where participants explore faith as a personal journey relevant to lives in the 21st century. As course materials suggest "it hopes to expose people to the ideas and concepts that have been taught and discussed for generations in our seminaries, but don't usually get discussed in churches." Living the Questions is for those yearning for something more than the shallow platitudes that often pass for theology. It's for those who want a class that encourages questions and dialogue. The class explores the best of modern theological thought in an open, accepting environment that invites people to share their thoughts and experiences safely. Each film segment is self-contained and deals with an important aspect of our faith journey. Theologians such as Borg, Brueggeman, Crossan, Fox, Kung, and others, offer their thoughts on a range of topics from reading the Bible, the life of Jesus, Paul's message, the Rapture, social justice, the reality of evil, prayer, the meaning of kingdom, etc. Founders Room, The Rev. Mark LaGory, Victor Darley-Usmar, Chris Heckemeyer, and Sandra Watson

Pastoral Care Notes
"Six Simple Weeks"
A Grief Support Experience
for Saint Luke's
For many years grief support groups were a regular feature of life at Saint Luke's, but finally died off due to a perceived lack of interest and participation. This fall we are "raising the flag" again, offering a six-week group experience for interested adults who may be struggling with an experience of loss. The group will be facilitated by the Rev. Steve DeGweck and will meet for six consecutive Thursday evenings beginning September 24th at 7 p.m. in the Tilson Room.
The group will focus on a different theme or aspect of the grief experience each week and will be built upon group members sharing their experiences and struggles within a safe, supportive, and prayerful fellowship. Once again, this is a SUPPORT GROUP, not a lecture course on grief. We will require a minimum of five participants in order to offer the group, and registration will be capped at twelve persons. The burden of coping with grief and loss can at times be overwhelming and debilitating. Healing can begin within a caring and supportive group where each participant is encouraged to share his/her journey with others. To register, or simply to know more about the group, call Steve (802-6203) or send him an e-mail at sdegweck@saint-lukes.com. Loved Ones Hospitalized? Once again, please be reminded that your clergy make daily visits to most of the major medical centers in Birmingham. If you or a loved one is hospitalized for any reason, especially overnight, please call the Clergy Secretary Barbara Vandergriff (802-6207) so we can make a pastoral visit. Given modern "privacy" regulations, it is virtually impossible for us to find out about your hospitalization unless you let us know. Hospitals will not call us, even if you register as a Saint Luke's member. Visiting our sick in hospitals is never an "inconvenience" to your priests; it is the reason we're here! Please help us to better serve all God's people at Saint Luke's by keeping us informed of illnesses or crises that may be affecting you or those you love.

As the children begin to discover the vast cosmic history of God's plan and salvation, they begin to realize that they have something to contribute to it. Moral sensitivity and awareness begins here and grows as the work is presented. 4th, 5th, and 6th-Graders Bible Games - Room 214 6:30 pm to 7:15 pm Upper elementary students are invited to join Mrs. Emily for an upbeat and energetic lesson time. Lay Aside Items For 55th Place
Ingathering, Friday, October 2
As you sort through your closets this summer, please keep in mind that we will have a Fall Ingathering for 55th Place the first Friday in October (October 2). All you need to do is gather your items and drive to the church! Volunteers will be stationed at the porte-cochere to help remove donations from your car between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. We will accept used household items, linens, small appliances, small furniture, kitchen items, clothing, and more. 55th Place is one of our Saint Luke's outreach ministries, and proceeds go to help the needy in Birmingham. |
Stewardship Of Creation
Even though we have had a wonderful amount of rainfall this year, many people use gray water for watering plants or irrigation. Gray water is waste water produced from sinks, showers, bathtubs and washing machines. There is a simple way for most of us who do not have a household system set up for gray water to use gray water. Just place a bucket under the kitchen or bathroom sink and catch the cold water (that is just going into the sewer system or septic tank) while waiting for the water to get hot. Try it for one day and you'll probably be amazed at how many house and outdoor planters can be watered through this system.

Attention Medical Personnel...
Any Used Stethoscopes?
Grace Episcopal Church's AIDS Outreach Committee and UAB's continuing medical mission to Zambia and Haiti are collecting used stethoscopes to help outfit nurses who are battling twin epidemics of AIDS and tuberculosis. Nurses in these countries work long hours for little pay and often cannot afford to buy their own stethoscopes, so they work without them. If you have a working used stethoscope, please place it in the box in the Saint Luke's library marked STETHOSCOPES, located to the left of the desk. For more information, please call Sandie Keith (970-6329).

Stephen Ministry News
Stephen Ministers Enjoy
Good Food and Learning!
On Tuesday, August 18th, our Stephen ministers gathered to enjoy a potluck dinner, followed by an hour of continuing education, designed to help us improve our people-helping skills. We were joined by the Rev. Steve Sweatt, Clinical Director of the Community Grief Support Service in Homewood. Chaplain Sweatt spoke to us about understanding the dynamics of grief and loss, and gave us strategies for helping our care receivers toward healing and closure. Bob Creveling is the Stephen Ministry coordinator of continuing education. Chaplain Sweatt's presentation was the latest in a series of enrichment activities for Stephen ministers, all designed to make us better servants to the Saint Luke's community and to all we meet who suffer the pains of loss .
Another Season of Supervision
Stephen ministers will meet in newly-reassembled Supervision groups on September 1st to kick off another season of Stephen ministry at Saint Luke's. In Supervision groups, Stephen ministers gather with one another and a group leader to share their experiences of caregiving and with the help and support of their colleagues, explore ways to improve their listening and caregiving skills. Confidentiality is always preserved, even as cases are discussed, and group meetings are opened and closed with prayer to remind us that God is in charge of our Stephen ministry, and that we strive always to be channels of his blessing and love to our caregivers.
Can We Help?
Stephen ministers are members of Saint Luke's who provide one-on-one Christian care to persons struggling with a wide variety of life crises and who can benefit from having a supportive and understanding person assigned to them to meet regularly with them and walk with them through their difficult time. If you or someone you love might benefit from having the assistance of a Stephen minister, please contact Fr. Steve DeGweck at 802-6203.
