Let your continual mercy, O Lord, cleanse and defend your Church; and, because it cannot continue in safety without your help, protect and govern it always by your goodness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God,
for ever and ever. Amen.

"....Of England they to
Canterbury wend...."
"To distant shrines well known in sundry lands And specially from every shire's end Of England they to Canterbury wend The holy blessed martyr there to seek." (Chaucer: Prologue to the Canterbury Tales)
On Wednesday, August 12, our Parish Choir and members of the Parish Choir of our sister church Saint Mary's-on-the-Highlands leave Birmingham for our European Cathedrals Tour. We arrive first in Paris to sing at the Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity, known as the American Cathedral, on Sunday morning, August 16. Then on to England to sing Evensong two nights at Canterbury Cathedral (the "Mother Church"), then on to London to sing Evensong two nights at Saint Paul's Cathedral.
This trip has been two years in the making and is finally here! Please keep us in your prayers for a safe journey and a return home. --Jim Dorroh

Attention Medical Personnel! Any Used Stethoscopes?
Grace Episcopal Church's AIDS Outreach Committee and UAB's continuing medical mission to Zambia and Haiti are collecting used stethoscopes to help outfit nurses who are battling twin epidemics of AIDS and tuberculosis. Nurses in these countries work long hours for little pay and often cannot afford to buy their own stethoscopes, so they work without them. If you have a working used stethoscope, please place it in the box in the Saint Luke's library marked STETHOSCOPES, located to the left of the desk. For more information, please call Sandie Keith (970-6329).

Children's Ministries
Volunteers Needed For Rotation The Children's Ministry still needs volunteers to help with Rotation Sunday School this coming school year. Rotation is for children in 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th grades and is a great volunteer opportunity for any age adult. You will only be needed for four weeks. If you are interested, please contact Emily Boles (802-6211 or eboles@saint-luke.com).
Dear Friends, As many of you know we will be starting a Level II Atrium this Fall, which will be called the Atrium of the True Vine. This will the offering for our first, second, and third-graders on Wednesday nights. In the Level I Atrium we focus on the love of the Good Shepherd. The children hear and proclaim this love to me and to God every time they are in the Atrium!
It is with a tremendous amount of joy that Level II will be offered at Saint Luke's. In the Level II Atrium we will think about the unity and the vastness of God, and the blank page that is yet to be written! I would love to share with anyone who wants to know more about this incredible work that is taking place at our church. I recently completed half (sixty hours) of my training this summer, and will receive my certfication after next summer's class.
I am in real need of supplies for this Atrium and want to ask everyone to look in their attic, closet, or lake house for any of the listed materials that you might have. Also, as you shop for school supplies, if you are interested in adding to our supplies for the Atrium, please contact me (968-8140 or 567-7664 or amonachelli@hotmail.com) to see what is needed.
God's Peace, Ashley Monachelli
Items Needed for the Level II Atrium: · Lamps · Rugs (a large rug would be nice, there is no carpet in the room we are in) · 2 coffee tables · 1 or 2 end tables · Red and black felt-tip pins · Pencil holders · Nice file holder for the children's work · Pencils · Clip boards · Small three ring binders for the children to work on their own missal. (I would need to give someone the exact size if they would like to donate these.) · Old Christmas cards with pictures from the infancy narratives · Calligraphy paper and pens · several plants · sacred art to hang on the walls · a seamstress to make some burlap "curtains" to cover open shelves, and a fair linen · Bibles NRSV or ESV ( I would to have around 10) · Bibles in several different languages

Adult Confirmation Classes Begin In November
If you are interested in becoming a member of Saint Luke's or have an interest in learning more and/or refreshing yourself on the Episcopal Church, the upcoming Inquirers' Classes are for you. Attending does not mean that you are making a commitment; however, to be confirmed, you do need this series of classes. Classes will include topics such as Church History, The Book of Common Prayer, How the Bible Came to Be, Living the Christian Life, and Instructed Eucharist. The classes, taught by the Rev. Richmond Webster, Rector, also provide an avenue for asking questions about who we are as Episcopalians and members of Saint Luke's. Below are the dates for the classes:
Sundays, November 1 and 8, 9:30 am Wednesdays, November 4 and 11, 6:30 pm. Sunday, November 15, Instructed Eucharist and Dinner 6:00 pm. Confirmation Sunday, December 6
Mark these dates on your calendar. For more information, please contact Jeanna Speegle (jspeegle@saint-lukes.com or 802-6218).

Adult Education
Sneak Preview For Fall!
Our first three Sundays this fall, we will hear a report from the Rev. Richmond Webster on the Continuum of Discipleship at Saint Luke's with special emphasis on the first leg of our Christian journey: Meeting Jesus. In keeping with this theme, on Wednesday nights we'll gather for an engaging and thought-provoking introduction to Jesus Christ through the films of Rob Bell. Many who enjoyed these films in Sunday school say they look forward to watching them again, and there are several we haven't seen yet. On Sunday mornings, in the fall, look for a class on parenting, new and improved based on last fall's experience, and, of course, a class on the lectionary readings. Does this whet your appetite? Look for more information on more fall offerings in the weeks to come!
