Do You Know Someone
Who Will Need A Paper Dialogue?
As mentioned last week, we are pleased to offer the Dialogue weekly and will send it electronically, unless a request is made to have it mailed to you. Chances are that if you are reading this announcement, you are content with receiving your Dialogue via email! However, some in our parish may not have access to or be comfortable with electronic communication.   If you know someone who needs to continue receiving the Dialogue by regular mail, please contact Nancy Cain (ncain@saint-lukes.com or 802-6200). Thank you!

The final printing for the current paper Dialogue will be for the issue dated August 2 and 9.

 Remembering Bishop Miller
A Personal Note From A Grateful Friend

 Miller Bob

The light over the altar in Saint Francis Church, Indian Springs, is a circle.  Somewhere there is a picture of Bishop Miller, signing a prayer book, with that circle over his head like a halo.  Bishop Miller ordained me, and he was rector at Saint Francis several years before I became rector there.  Whenever he came for confirmation or other events, it was a homecoming.  Happily, my coming to Saint Luke's meant worshipping with  Bob and Peggy Miller, when Bob wasn't filling in for a wandering bishop.   At the memorial service last Friday, Bishop Parsley said Bob was a good shepherd, and his voice choked with tears as he said it.  Bishop Miller was our brother in Christ, our pastor in so many sweet, loving ways.

This is one of my favorite Bishop Miller stories:  He visited a dear parishioner and friend, Lib Yon, in the hospital when she was very ill with cancer.  She had decisions to make and many different pieces of information to consider.  She worried that she didn't know what she should pray for.  Bishop Miller told her it's always okay to pray for what you want.  When she told me about it later, it was with relief.  She had been feeling pressure to pray for what God wants.  I feel that pressure sometimes myself, and I've come to believe, God prefers honest self-revelation rather than religious correctness.  It reminds me of a question I've heard from time to time, "Do you want to be right, or do you want to be in relationship?"

My beloved Bishop was a wonder at relationship.  I never left his presence without a kiss and the delightful awareness that he cherished me.  I feel a terrible loss and I'm glad I got to pray with others who miss him too.  At the memorial service, we remembered the promise of resurrection life and I was comforted, knowing Bob has received a kiss from our Lord himself, who cherishes him more than we do.

Are Tech-Savvy!

computer class for seniors

About a dozen of our senior adults are attending a computer class taught by Mike Caldwell, Saint Luke's Systems Administrator and organized by Jeanna Speegle. They are learning the basics of email and the internet, so they can communicate with their grandchildren, access the Saint Luke's web site, open pictures, and research topics on the web. Another class is scheduled for August, and it is already full! Look for more classes in the coming year.

Lay Aside Items For 55th Place
As you sort through your closets this summer, please keep in mind that we will have a Fall Ingathering for 55th Place the first Friday in October (October 2). All you need to do is gather your items and drive to the church! Volunteers will be stationed at the porte-cochere, October 2, to help remove donations from your car between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. We will accept used household items, linens, small appliances, small furniture, kitchen items, clothing, and more. 55th Place is one of our Saint Luke's outreach ministries, and proceeds go to help the needy in Birmingham. Remember To Bring Toiletries
For Grace Woodlawn Food Bank
As you travel this summer, instead of accumulating clutter from all of those little shampoo bottles, soaps, toothpaste, etc., bring them to the church and place them in the box in Claypool Commons marked "Grace Woodlawn Food Bank." To many in our community, these "clutter" items are considered luxury items. (We can only accept items that have not been opened or used.)

Stewardship Of Creation

Reduce And Re-Use
When we buy stainless steel or BPA free plastic water bottles and fill them with our own filtered water, we are stopping a chain of events that can harm our planet. Plastic water bottles can be recycled, but it takes petroleum and energy to make them and it takes energy to re-make recycled products. A home water filter is more than likely going to give you a better quality drinking water and acouple of re-usable bottles take up lots less space. If you do continue to use plastic filled water bottles, please do not re-use these. They are meant for one time use only and they can leach toxic chemicals as hormone disruptors and carcinogens into the water, especially when they get warm.

The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it. (Psalm 24:1)
