Lord God Almighty, you have made all the peoples of the earth for your glory, to serve you in freedom and in peace: Give to the people of our country a zeal for justice and the strength of forbearance, that we may use our liberty in accordance with your gracious will; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Dear Friends,
Shortly after my arrival as your Rector, I learned that our parish really missed having a weekly newsletter. Some years before, we moved to a biweekly format for financial reasons. To create more of a "magazine" we added a sermon as the cover letter and pictures of our parish family in addition to providing a calendar of events. Feedback has been positive, and we've grown accustomed to the Dialogue in its present format; yet there has always been that lingering hope to return to weekly communication.
In the past year or so, I've seen two developments regarding parish communications. First, Saint Luke's is a busy parish and it is not always easy to communicate up-to-date information with a biweekly newsletter, and secondly, electronic communication has become an effective means of promoting special events.
With this in mind, we are excited to begin offering the Dialogue on a weekly basis once again! Unless you wish to receive a paper copy in the mail, we will send the newsletter electronically. During the summer months, we will make every effort to contact our members who may not be able to receive an electronic version of the Dialogue and will also make plenty of paper copies readily available for pick up at the church. In other words, you can still receive the Dialogue in the mail if you wish, but for those who use email regularly, we are eager to provide you with a more interactive newsletter. I think you will agree that the clarity and color of photos and graphics allow us to present a more dynamic picture of the parish.
In addition to a weekly newsletter, we will be providing article-driven quarterly magazines, as well as parish publications similar to the Lenten Mediations book. I hope you will enjoy this new - and yet old - way of communicating to our parish family! With prayers for a restful summer, I remain,
Yours, Richmond Webster
The final printing for the current paper Dialogue will be for the issue dated of August 2 and 9. Any requests for a paper Dialogue beyond the mailing of that issue can be made by calling the church at 871-3583.

Lay Aside Items For 55th Place
As you sort through your closets this summer, please keep in mind that we will have a Fall Ingathering for 55th Place the first Friday in October (October 2). All you need to do is gather your items and drive to the church! Volunteers will be stationed at the porte-cochere, October 2, to help remove donations from your car between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. We will accept used household items, linens, small appliances, small furniture, kitchen items, clothing, and more. 55th Place is one of our Saint Luke's outreach ministries, and proceeds go to help the needy in Birmingham. Click here to learn more about 55th Place. |
Remember To Bring Toiletries For Grace Woodlawn Food Bank
As you travel this summer, instead of accumulating clutter from all of those little shampoo bottles, soaps, toothpaste, etc., bring them to the church and place them in the box in Claypool Commons marked "Grace Woodlawn Food Bank." To many in our community, these "clutter" items are considered luxury items. (We can only accept items that have not been opened or used.)

Thoughts On Stewardship
2 Corinthians 8:7-15. Now as you excel in every thing- in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in utmost eagerness, and in our lovefor you-so we want you to excel also in this generous undertaking.
My parish mentions money only before hitting us up for some.
I used to know the exact week of "Stewardship" Sunday and would plan to be away. One children's sermon, however, caught me off guard. Each child was handed a baggy with ten shiny pennies. Yes, they could keep the pennies, at least all but one which was to be put back in the collection plate. They still looked pretty happy, but when the plate came around my grandson did not share. He figured all ten pennies were now unequivocally his. While churches do need money to operate, stewardship is about more than balancing the budget. Stewardship is a spiritual issue. God has provided for and will continue to provide for our every need. Failure to give graciously reflects only one thing -- a lack of faith.
God wants our heart, 100 percent. God asks for a token 10 percent of our treasure, knowing that where our treasure is, there will our heart be also.
Submitted by the Rev. Rusty Goldsmith and taken from Forward Day By Day, reading for Sunday, 28, 2009.

Dear Saint Luke's Members, On behalf of the people we serve, thank you for your support! We are grateful for your choir's involvement in our 4th Annual Sing & Shout this past spring, and are incredibly thankful to be included in your missions budget.
