Sunday Lectionary Readings
June 28 Fourth Sunday After Pentecost, Year B
2 Samuel 1:1, 17-27 Psalm 130 2 Corinthians 8:7-15 Mark 5:21-43
Almighty God, you have built your Church upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone: Grant us so to be joined together in unity of spirit by their teaching, that we may be made a holy temple acceptable to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Remember To Bring Toiletries For Grace Woodlawn Food Bank
As you travel this summer, instead of accumulating clutter from all of those little shampoo bottles, soaps, toothpaste, etc., bring them to the church and place them in the box in Claypool Commons marked "Grace Woodlawn Food Bank." To many in our community, these "clutter" items are considered luxury items. (We can only accept items that have not been opened or used.)

Ashley Attends Level II Atrium Training
If you know me at all, you have heard me talk about the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd! I was privileged to begin my training for Level II (for 1st - 3rd-graders) at All Saints Episcopal church with approximately twenty other women from all of the country and world last week.
I spent over sixty hours with these wonderful women learning about scripture, our liturgy, and our shared love for this work. We will all gather together again next summer for a week of training to complete Level II. Next June, after receiving over 100 hours of training, we will receive our certificate.
I am so incredibly grateful to the parishioners who are now taking the Level I course and the generosity of Bill Powers and Wayne Hoar for making so many materials for our Atrium.
If you are interested in touring the Atrium or seeing the three atria at All Saint's, please email me amonachelli@hotmail.com

Summer Adult Education Offerings
Sunday Morning Lectionary Study 9:15 am to 10:15 am, Room 224 This class will meet every Sunday throughout the summer without any breaks. Empty nesters and adults who do not have children in need of supervision are invited to explore the riches of each Sunday's Bible readings with Father Steve DeGweck.
Sunday Morning Study On Amos and Micah 9:15 am, Founders Room
Let justice well up as waters and righteousness as a mighty stream. Amos 5:24
In the last session of the class "living the question", the narrator gave two focal points of the Christian religion: relationship with God and a passion for justice. The narrator said the Christian has "to see" this passion for justice and the best place is in the context of the Jewish Bible. He suggested we read Amos and Micah. While our language, worship and customs are different, if the prophets Amos, and Micah were to visit us today, we might be shocked to see how little their messages would change from the one they delivered nearly three millennia ago. For human hearts are still the same--and so is God. Injustice, oppression, and political corruption anger Him as much as ever. So, for seven Sundays beginning June 7, at 9:15 am, there will a study of these two "minor prophets" led by Chris Heckemeyer and Bill Powers. The class will focus on who were Amos and Micah, what did they have to say to their communities, and what does that say to us in our world?
Mondays: God's Fierce Love: Living Like the Lilies of the Field
Two meeting times offered:
10:00 am and 5:30 pm · Room 232
A short film and easy-going discussion will strengthen your trust in the unfailing love of God. Rob Bell's films offer powerful encouragement and start good conversations. Diane Weatherford and Warren Cain teach the morning class, and Patty Gilbert teaches the course in the evening. All are welcome. This class will meet on four Mondays: June 8, 15, 22, and 29.

Better Basics
Saint Luke's Episcopal Church recently awarded non-profit agency Better Basics a grant for the year 2009. The mission of Better Basics is to advance literacy by providing reading intervention and enrichment programs. Better Basics will use this donation for its Reading Intervention program.
Reading Intervention targets students in elementary schools who are below grade level in reading and require intervention in order to become proficient readers. Students are selected to participate through teacher recommendations and test scores. They are placed with an intervention teacher employed by Better Basics who works with the students in a small group format three times a week for twenty weeks. Students working with the intervention teacher focus on the five most effective components of reading instruction, according to current research and practice. These five are phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Writing skills are also emphasized. The intervention teachers are trained to meet the child's individual needs in these areas.
Both certified teachers and volunteers working in the program receive Better Basics training from their curriculum director and are supervised by their Reading Intervention Program Coordinators. Volunteers work with students once a week with an emphasis on oral reading and comprehension.
Better Basics appreciates having both funding and volunteer support from Saint Luke's. Volunteers identified as members of Saint Luke's for the 2008-2009 school year include Ann Abernethy, Lynn Callahan, Jeff Eubanks, Jeff Hawles, Steven Hydinger, and Jenny Salem.
If you are interested in volunteering with Better Basics, fill out the online form at www.betterbasics.org or contact the volunteer coordinator at 944-2928 or volcoord@betterbasics.org

Stewardship Of Creation
Recycle Tip: Here is a tip for those of you who would like to recycle glass, but can't get to the recycle center on Second Avenue North as often as you would like. Check with a couple of friends in your neighborhood who also would like to recycle glass. Each person will take the glass to be recycled once a month. That way each person will go to the center once every three months or only four times a year.
"The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it." (Psalm 24:1)
