Lay Aside Items For 55th Place
As you sort through your closets this summer, please keep in mind that we will have a Fall Ingathering for 55th Place the first Friday in October (October 2). All you need to do is gather your items and drive to the church! Volunteers will be stationed at the porte-cochere to help remove donations from your car between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. We will accept used household items, linens, small appliances, small furniture, kitchen items, clothing, and more. 55th Place is one of our Saint Luke's outreach ministries, and proceeds go to help the needy in Birmingham. |
Will You Serve As A Labeler This Summer?
There is a fun group at the church made up of all ages, sizes, genders, etc. that hand-label our Dialogue twice a month, from 8:30 am to 9:30 am on Tuesdays. If your summer schedule will allow you to share thirty minutes or an hour with us, we would love to have you share our fun! To learn more, please call Melinda Powers (879-0823).
A special note to students: this is an easy way to earn service hours!

Remember To Bring Toiletries For Grace Woodlawn Food Bank
As you travel this summer, instead of accumulating clutter from all of those little shampoo bottles, soaps, toothpaste, etc., bring them to the church and place them in the box in Claypool Commons marked "Grace Woodlawn Food Bank." To many in our community, these "clutter" items are considered luxury items. (We can only accept items that have not been opened or used.)

Soon Our Choir Will Be Off To Europe!
The Saint Luke's Parish Choir will make its European debut in August! Twenty-three members of the Parish Choir will be joined by twenty members from the Parish Choir of Saint Mary's-on-the-Highlands Episcopal Church. Our Rector, Rich Webster, will be singing Tenor with the choir as we sing music by Brahms, Bainton, Dyson, Harwood, Parry, and Ayleward.
On August 12, we will fly out of Birmingham to Atlanta, then on to Paris, where we will sing Sunday morning, August 16 at the American (Episcopal) Cathedral. The following week, we will sing Evensong for two nights at Canterbury Cathedral (the "Mother Church") and Evensong for another two nights at Saint Paul's Cathedral in London. What an honor to sing in these holy and venerable houses of worship!
I speak on behalf of our choir when I say "Thank you!" to all of you in our beloved Parish for heartily supporting our fund-raising efforts. This has been a great help in making this trip possible. Jim Dorroh, Director of Music

Summer Adult Education Offerings
Sunday Morning Lectionary Study 9:15 am to 10:15 am, Room 224 This class will meet every Sunday throughout the summer without any breaks. Empty nesters and adults who do not have children in need of supervision are invited to explore the riches of each Sunday's Bible readings with Father Steve DeGweck.
Sunday Morning Study On Amos and Micah 9:15 am, Founders Room
Let justice well up as waters and righteousness as a mighty stream. Amos 5:24
In the last session of the class "living the question", the narrator gave two focal points of the Christian religion: relationship with God and a passion for justice. The narrator said the Christian has "to see" this passion for justice and the best place is in the context of the Jewish Bible. He suggested we read Amos and Micah. While our language, worship and customs are different, if the prophets Amos, and Micah were to visit us today, we might be shocked to see how little their messages would change from the one they delivered nearly three millennia ago. For human hearts are still the same--and so is God. Injustice, oppression, and political corruption anger Him as much as ever. So, for seven Sundays beginning June 7, at 9:15 am, there will a study of these two "minor prophets" led by Chris Heckemeyer and Bill Powers. The class will focus on who were Amos and Micah, what did they have to say to their communities, and what does that say to us in our world?
Mondays: God's Fierce Love: Living Like the Lilies of the Field
Two meeting times offered:
10:00 am and 5:30 pm · Room 232
A short film and easy-going discussion will strengthen your trust in the unfailing love of God. Rob Bell's films offer powerful encouragement and start good conversations. Diane Weatherford and Warren Cain teach the morning class, and Patty Gilbert teaches the course in the evening. All are welcome. This class will meet on four Mondays: June 8, 15, 22, and 29.

Wilmer Hall
Children's Home
Wilmer Hall Children's Home would like to acknowledge with deep appreciation Saint Luke's recent grant donation. This donation will go toward a private school scholarship for one of our children (Tyrell) to attend for the 2009-2010 school year. He has just completed his first year at this school and has excelled in all subjects. Our mission at Wilmer Hall is to alleviate loneliness and abandonment by providing an environment of love where children can live, learn and grow; a place where they can experience unconditional love and know that they are not alone. With your generosity and support we will continue our 145 year old mission of caring for children. It is a privilege to serve as Executive Director of Wilmer Hall; being a part of these children's lives is an incredible source of joy for me. Faithfully yours, Sally Greene
