Sneak Preview for Fall!

Our first three Sundays this fall, we will hear a report from the Rev. Richmond Webster on the Continuum of Discipleship at Saint Luke's with special emphasis on the first leg of our Christian journey: Meeting Jesus. In keeping with this theme, on Wednesday nights we'll gather for an engaging and thought-provoking introduction to Jesus Christ through the films of Rob Bell. Many who enjoyed these films in Sunday school say they look forward to watching them again, and there are several we haven't seen yet. On Sunday mornings, in the fall, look for a class on parenting, new and improved based on last fall's experience, and, of course, a class on the lectionary readings. Does this whet your appetite? Look for more information on more fall offerings in the weeks to come!

Claypool Scholarship Awards

The Claypool Scholarship Committee met in April to review applications for the 2009/2010 school year. We have selected Grier Darnall and Louise McGowin as the two new recpients.

Miss Darnall is a student at Mountain Brook High School and will graduate this spring. Grier plans to attend Vanderbilt University next fall. Miss McGowin is a student at UMC-Wright Preparatory School in Mobile and will attend college in North Carolina this fall. Both young ladies had outstanding records and achievement in their high school careers, and we are happy to be in a position to award them with a partial scholarship.

In addition, the committee has chosen to renew scholarships for Kaki Nix who attends Sewanee - The University of the South, Ann Watford who attends Davidson College, Andrew Timberlake who attends Yale University, and Elizabeth Morton who attends the University of Alabama. All of these students had outstanding records again this past year, and met all of the renewal requirements for the Claypool Scholarship program.

It is a pleasure to work with these young people; we are proud of their achievements and the work that they have accomplished. We are glad to be associated with each of them through the Claypool Scholarship program. When you have an opportunity, look at the plaque in Claypool Commons near the table by the entrance. All of our Claypool Scholarship recipients are recognized on the plaque.  Congratulations to all of these fine students!

The funding of the Claypool Scholarship Program comes through Saint Luke's Episcopal Church Foundation. The Foundation Board handles all of the funds for this program.

Additional funding is needed to continue this program, and in particular, to try and raise the amount of the scholarship for each of these students each year. If you have more interest in the Claypool Scholarship program, please contact Betty O'Neil at the church (802-6201) or John Darnall (714-1012). We can use the help!

Correction: Last week this article stated that Kaki Nix attends Davidson and Ann Watford attends Sewanee. Please note that this week's article is correct: Kaki Nix attends Sewanee, and Ann Watford attends Davidson. We apologize for the error.

Kudos To Our Parish Nurse,
Carol Pearce!

When I first heard that Saint Lukes had a Parish Nurse I wondered, "Why do we need a Parish Nurse?"  Now that I have met Carol and visited with her, I marvel, "Aren't we blessed to have a Parish Nurse!"

As my husband Felix and I have grown older we have accumulated lots of prescriptions from various physicians.  Carol came in one afternoon to visit and helped us organize our medications.  She took the time to go through each medication checking the dosage, strength, and time of day to take each one.   That led us to check with our primary physician to be sure these medications are still relevant.  It has eased our minds to have everything organized and double-checked with the physician.

And that's just part of the picture.  The best thing about working with Carol is her professionalism and her  caring, serving heart.  Because she is a R.N., we are assured of her competency.  Because she is a Christian, we have experienced her loving kindness.  Her ministry is one of healing and hope.

If you would like to schedule time with Carol so she can help you with a medical issue, just call the church. I'm confident you will be equally pleased.

Carol works at the church on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Her direct line is 802-6209, or you can email her at
