Saint Luke's Day School
Five Reasons to Support Our Day School
Here are five reasons why Saint Luke's Day School is an important ministry of Saint Luke's Church:
1. Hearing about Jesus from infancy forms Christians. If the words, "Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so," are buried in my heart, that's what will rise to help me when I'm in trouble. And we all know, trouble comes. Temptation comes. Our children need the resources of our faith in order to live according to our faith. Beginning with older two's, Day School children attend chapel every week, hearing Bible stories, praying and singing praise to God. Threes and fours also spend forty-five minutes every week in the Atrium, experiencing the presence of God in hands on materials and Bibles stories. For little ones, scripture and worship are visible, touchable, and delightful at Saint Luke's Day school.
2. Young families are experiencing great stress. Even when one parent is a stay-at-home care giver, young children in a household strain patience, finances, relationships, and cause fatigue, conflict, and frustration. Kids are a lot of fun too, but we cannot underestimate how difficult they are. In the best of circumstances, extended family relieves some of that stress, but the best circumstances aren't always available. Our Day School supports young families just by giving them a break.
3. This ministry supports young families by encouraging the practice of Christian and civic values. Children learn how to live in community and respect the dignity of every human being. Teachers lovingly guide children in coping with other children. Experience in "how to get along" can't happen in isolation. The Day School is an immersion in the school of love.
4. I would be pleased if every family came to church every Sunday and Wednesday and sometimes in between, but in reason number 2, I mentioned stress, and the need for a break. I've noticed families sometimes need a break on the weekends. There are a million reasons why families aren't in church every Sunday. Our Day School can help fill in some of the gaps that result from missing Sunday school and children's chapel. For some children who are un-churched, our Day School is the only church they know! If we bring the love of Jesus to just one family, who might not meet Him otherwise, that's worth all the time, effort, and money we pour into our school.
5. Scripture says a little child will lead us into the kingdom of God. Jesus says when we welcome a little one, we welcome Him. I can't imagine working in a church that isn't filled with children. Saint Luke's Day School is blessed with skilled and loving care-givers and teachers, and 136 beautiful little saints. They aren't just our ministry, they are joy and light and life.
Those are five good reasons! I encourage everyone to pray for our Day School children and their teachers, and look for ways to help them follow Jesus.

Celebrating Earth Day
Celebrating Earth Day is a reminder to all of us to give thanks for our wonderful planet. There are so many ways to give thanks and celebrate this day. For many of us April is a month of spring cleaning in the garden and in the house. We may not think much about it, but planting a tree, using a no VOC (volatile organic compounds) paint or adding a water filter to our faucets to fill water bottles are just a couple of things we do to help our planet. This year the Stewardship for Creation committee from Saint Luke's has committed to help with the Five Mile Creek cleanup. This can be a wonderful way to educate our children as well as ourselves. We can see first-hand what happens when we do not care for what has been given to us. We can also see what we can do when we participate in caring for God's creation. Saturday, April 25th is a day of opportunity for families, Sunday school classes, reunion groups and book clubs to give something back to this planet our island home. For more information on the cleanup contact Libba Vaughn (226-7903).
