December 2010                                                                              'Tis the Season to be Merry!
Greetings Vipers,

The 2010-2011 Club season has started off with a bang at Rancho Sports Center! The gym is packed with terrific teams of all ages and the enthusiasm in the gym is contagious. This season Vipeviperr is using all 7 courts and it really creates an incredible volleyball environment for our teams to use for daily practice. Throughout the season, Rancho Sports Center will also be used as a tournament site for SCVA and it will certainly give our teams a home court advantage!

To Kick-Off our 2010-2011 season, we are hosting our very own In-House Tournament this Saturday, December 18th. This is a great opportunity for our teams to build their team spirit, work on rotations and get to know their fellow Viper teammates. At Viper we are a family, and this event allows all of our families to get to know one another and see the incredible talent we have from 12s-18s.

The holidays are fast approaching and we hope that everyone gets to enjoy some much needed rest, family time and yummy food :) The week before Christmas, many of our teams will be practicing at their usual time, but some teams will change their practice times, so make sure to check in with your coach! Please note, there will be NO CORE the week before Christmas (Dec 20-23). After the Viper Holiday Break (Dec 23-Jan 2), practice and CORE will resume as scheduled the week of January 3rd!

Everyone at Viper would like to thank you for being apart of our Club and we look forward to providing your family and daughters with a terrific experience this season.

See you on the court,

Dana Burkholder
Club Director

College Commitments
Congratulations to Allysa Medina - University of Hampton

Allysa Medina committed to attend the University of Hampton on a full ride scholarship in early December 2010. Allysa Medina has played for Viper for the past three years, starting on our 15-2 team with Pat Gates. She was on the 16-1s with Dana Burkholder last year and is now on our 17-1s with Aaron Capp.

Here is a Q&A with Allysa about her recruiting experience:
Allysa Medina Hampton
How does it feel to be committed to play for a division 1 college as a junior?
I am very excited about playing volleyball for Hampton University .  It has always been my goal to have the opportunity to play college volleyball at any level. I still can't believe that I will be playing Division 1 volleyball.  I am even more excited about committing as a Junior and how fortunate I am to have been chosen so early amongst hundreds of girls that wanted to be apart of the Hampton volleyball program.  Now the real work begins... I plan on using these next two years to really focus on my grades and overall performance as an outside hitter and all around player.

What was the recruiting process like?
The recruiting process for me was somewhat easy.  The Head Coach from Hampton University saw me play in Reno, Nevada at Junior Nationals and spoke with Coach Dana about the possibility of me playing for his program.  I then went on line to find out as much information as I could about the volleyball program.  I really liked what I saw on the Hampton website and from there I began emailing and calling the Head Coach once a week. Coach Pete was very easy to talk to and the more I talked to him, the more comfortable I felt. I could really see myself playing for him at Hampton University.  I received letters of interest from many different Colleges and Universities throughout the country, but I really liked Hampton University early on and it really felt like a good fit for me.

What made you interested in Hampton?
Hampton University is one of the most prestigious Universities in Virginia.  It is rich in culture and offers a wide range of majors and academic programs. I like the fact that  Hampton University is aAllysa Medina Attack mid-size University with smaller classrooms and most of all, I could really see myself playing volleyball at Hampton and fitting into their volleyball program.

What were some important factors in your decision to commit?
I believe that Hampton University exceeds my academic expectations and I will be able to thrive as an incoming student-athlete. I also believe that I can compete and earn playing time.  Over time, I talked with the Head Coach almost every week and after meeting him and visiting the campus, I was hooked. Hampton is one of the most beautiful campuses I've ever seen and I could really see myself living and playing volleyball there for 4-5 years.

What can you share about the process to help other players in our club?
I think it's important to think outside the box and to keep all your options open and not be consumed with playing for only Pac 10 schools.  There are many schools that are not Pac 10 but offer competitive volleyball and most important, the opportunity to receive a quality education.  I was concerned about going to a school so far away from home but Coach Dana had said to me that "once you are away, you are away".  Coach Dana went on to say that  everyone who goes away to school has to go through an adjustment period and that it gets easier with time. I think its important to ask a lot of questions and to share your concerns with coaches and athletes that have gone through the process. It's also important to share your accomplishments, awards and video footage with the colleges you are interested in attending.  Always play your best at tournaments, festival, nationals etc.  You never know what schools could be watching you.  And lastly, I've learned a lot over the years and I am still learning and developing as a player, and my enthusiasm to improve was important to Coach Pete.

From everyone at Viper: Congratulations Allysa and keep up the good work!

Viper's CORE Training is new this year and is already making an impact with the players. The CORE Training is specifically designed to help our volleyball players get stronger and faster in ways that directly translate to the court. You can already see a difference in the 14 and under teams that have been training for a month now.

The CORE program is directed by coach and trainer Neemias Costa and Prodigy trainer Troy Aguayo. We will be working to continually improve this program throughout the season to make it both functional and challenging.

NEW - Volleyball-Specific Performance Training offered by TORQUE
Program begins January 2011!
Torque Logo

Who is this program for?
Viper athletes looking to receive serious, focused and intense volleyball specific training with certified and educated TORQUE Sports Performance Trainers! This is something that Viper athletes could do in addition to their current training regime. It's not right for everyone, but older players that are looking to get stronger and faster could benefit from this program. Also, players that have specific muscle weaknesses or imbalances could improve tremendously. It would also be beneficial for players who are not currently doing CORE training with Viper.
