Dear Vipers,

Even though it's not club season, there has been a lot of volleyball excitement in Temecula! Here is the scoop!

Tryout Dates for the 2009-2010 season have been posted! Please read below for details.

We have some great New Coaches joining Viper this season. We are really excited to introduce them below and on our website!

Fall Training is going great with our young players. We have a very solid and talented group working hard toward the upcoming season.

Positional Training, which is new this year, is really taking off and we are making a lot of progress with the specific positional understanding and technique. Our high school positional training started last week and we had a great first showing. If you want to join us for positional training, get more info below!

14sfunHigh School volleyball is now into the competition part of the season and our kids are really kicking butt! Most of the Varsity high school teams in the valley are comprised of 3 or more starters from Viper (in some cases freshman)! This really says a lot about the talent of our girls and the level of Viper's training. We are so proud of you, girls! Read more high school volleyball news below!

Viper is preparing for next season with a lot of enthusiasm. We are making improvements in every area to make things easier for our families and provide the best Club Volleyball opportunity available. Read below for more details!

Best wishes to everyone!

Introducing:

New Viper Coaching Staff

trevorcoachTrevor Schirman

Trevor was born and raised in Hawaii, and graduated from the volleyball powerhouse, Punahou High School.  Trevor went on to become the number 1 recruit in the nation in 1986 and decided to join UCLA and coach Al Scates.  At UCLA, his team won two National Championships and he was a three time All-American and the National Player of the Year in 1989.  Many of the collegiate records set by Trevor 20 years ago still stand today.
Trevor joined the USA National team in 1990 and earned medals in the World Cup, World Championships, and Norceca Championships.

Trevor married fellow Bruin and women's volleyball All-american Ann (Boyer) Schirman in 1991. Trevor came to Temecula in September 2008 to open the fourth location of Off Road Warehouse.  In doing so he gave up his coaching position at Grossmont High School in El Cajon and is currently assisting at Great Oak High.

Trevor has coached club and high school volleyball for a number of years, and he and his wife have run their own volleyball camps across the country. Trevor feels strongly that his success was directly related to quality of the coaching he received throughout his career.  His goal at Viper is to pass on the knowledge, experiences and lessons that he has accumulated over his career.  He is looking forward to helping each young athlete become the best person and volleyball player they can be. Trevor is going to bring a lot of knowledge and experience to the Elite teams this coming season. Here are some of his accolades:

1986 Inducted into Nissan Hawaii High School Hall of Fame
1986 Volleyball Monthly #1 recruit in the Nation
1987 & 1989 UCLA Mens National Champion
1989 National Player of the year & Final Four All-Tournament
3 Time All-American
USA National Team member 1990-1993

BriannaKocheBrianna Koche

This will be Brianna's first year coaching with the Vipers. She is currently the First Assistant Coach at UC Riverside, coaching under the 2008 Olympic Gold Medal winning coach Ron Larsen. Before coaching at UC Riverside, Brianna was the Assistant Coach at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, and helped coach the team to a 3rd place finish in the America East Conference during the 2008 season. Brianna has coached club teams at Encinitas Wave and TCA Baltimore, and we are extremely excited to have her on the Vipers' staff. Brianna will bring a lot of experience to Viper's Elite and future college players this season.

Brianna played for UC San Diego and finished her career as a Division II First Team All-American and lead her team to the Elite 8 in 2006. As a club player, Brianna has won a gold, silver and bronze medal at the Junior Olympics in 16 Open, 18 Open and 14 Open, respectively. In 2001, Brianna won a Division I State Championship at Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose, CA.

danicoachDani Schult

This will be Dani's first year coaching with Viper Volleyball. Dani was a competitive player in high school, club and college. Dani has been coaching volleyball camps and giving private lessons in San Diego and Atlanta for the past six years. In addition, for the past two years she coached club teams in Atlanta with Tsunami Volleyball Club. In 2009, she took the Head Coaching position at Linfield High School and will be joining the Viper staff.

Dani loves that volleyball is centered on the team, on a group of young women or men working together for common goals. At Emory, her team became her family and that is the type of caring, supportive, and competitive environment that she wants to create for her teams at Viper.

Dani recently finished her college career in 2008. As captain, Dani led Emory University's team to win the NCAA DIII National Championship in 2008, which was a first for Emory volleyball. The team was very unique and the NCAA recognized three of the players as All-Americans, and five as All-Conference selections, including myself. In addition, Dani was recognized as an Academic All-American, received an NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship and is currently one of the nine finalists for the 2008 NCAA Woman of the Year Award. It was truly a remarkable season.

Vipers make a BIG IMPACT taychapp
in High School!

Freshman playing BIG on Varsity!

Taylor Johnson is the starting setter/right side hitter for Chaparral High School's Varsity team.  She is one of the loudest players on the court and is really developing her leadership skills.  She is having fun jump setting as much as she can and loving the fact that she can play with and get to know other older Viper players on her team who treat her as a little sister.

Cassidy Wilson made the Varsity volleyball team at Temecula Valley High School. She is so excited and will be playing outside hitter. The team, which consists of many fellow Viper players, was very welcoming. She is looking forward 2 an exciting season.

Morgan Nunley is having a great time adjusting to high school and varsity volleyball. Outside of summer league, Vista Murrieta has only had one scrimmage against Elsinore and Temescal Canyon.  So far, Morgan is playing as a utility player, and plays wherever she is needed.  She has ran a 6-2 setting in the back row, and hit opposite.  When she sets, it's a very comfortable and natural connection with her fellow 14-1 Viper teammate, Alyse Whitaker. She is really looking forward to gaining more experience in other positions this season and making contributions to a successful freshman season.

raevyndanielleRaevyn Aiono made the varsity team at Corona High School and is positioned as the starting setter. This is a big accomplishment for Raevyn (#16) who currently runs a 5-1 with her team. Raevyn's words: "I'm a lady Panther! I'm having fun, learning everyday while playing the sport I love! I'm thankful for the all around training I've received at Viper because without there support, I would not be playing at the level I am now. Thanks VIPER"

Alyse Whitaker made the varsity team at Vista Murrieta and is really excited to join Morgan and a few other Vipers this season. There are three players in Alyse's position and she is working hard to earn playing time. More than anything she is just enjoying the experience of being in High School and playing for Varsity as a freshman.

Amanda Strack is one of 2 setters on Varsity at Great Oak. She is really excited to work with a great group of girls and a new Viper coach, Trevor. Amanda is learning to play at a faster pace and get to more balls - and to take charge on the floor! She is really excited to have this opportunity to play at a higher level.

Jaydra Thurber moved to Temecula in January of this year and has really improved in a short amount of time. Her competitiveness and athleticm, along with hard work, helped her to make the Varsity team at Chapparal High School. She is really excited to keep on learning and play at a high level.

Annika Backlund is playing Outside hitter for MVHS JV. She was voted team captain with the junior setter on the team. She was brought up to varsity for the Saddleback Tournamnet, and actually got to play a little! She is excited about her coaches- one being Kat from Viper and the great opportunity she will have to grow in experience as a player and team leader.

Congratulations to all our Viper freshman making an impact. Please send Dana a summary of what your daughter is up to for the next newsletter! More to come next month!

Senior Follow-Up

Tanya Ugaitafa
"Hey Vipers! College for me is going very well. Schoolwork is great because I have no other choice but to do the work, especially because of the fact that I am living on campus, and so there is no reason for me not to do the work. Yes, I am also playing volleyball; but, I now realize that STUDENT really does, come before ATHLETE. College is not too d
ifficult, yet it's not just going to be handed to you. You have to work for the knowledge and it's all focus."
awclogo     "As for volleyball, its going better than ever. I noticed that since I have been here at Arizona Western College, my inconsistency has flipped around, and turned into efficiency. During the summer, we went through two weeks of camp, in which we practiced 5 times a day 6 days a week. It was killer, but it was intense and I loved it! Now that school has started, we have our morning workouts (conditioning) from 5:50am-700am, and practice from 4pm-6:30pm. It may get a little tiring, but it's all up to you to manage your time wisely. AWC is a very supportive school in academics and in athletics. I'm excited that I am here, and I'm looking forward to many more challenges to come. Thank you vipers your for love and support." Note: Tanya will be playing in the San Diego City College Tournament on September 26th, so go and see the action!

utpalogoSarah Davis is loving University of Texas Pan American.  She really likes the coaches and the girls.  The team is struggling a bit, but Sarah has played in every game so she is still enjoying it. Sarah got off to a good start and seems to be staying confident in herself and knows she just needs to keep working at connecting with the setters. One thing her club experience taught her was to not get discouraged so quickly and to keep at it until she gets it.

Mekenna Cipres
Brenau Head Coach Meredith says, "As an individual player, Me
kenna is leading our team in service aces (with 11). She is one of our most influential freshman (1 of 2 who see regular playing time), and she is 1 0f 9 in our starting rotation. Mac, as we like to call hebrenaulogor, has been playing as setter and defensive specialist.... depending on what the needs are for that particular match. She has been a joy to have on the team; her work ethic, attitude, and thirst for knowledge has allowed her to become not only a great example to her peers, but also an outstanding young athlete for our team and program. Currently, we are 6-0, and two of those matches were huge wins for our program because it has been 7 years (or more) that Brenau has beaten Reinhardt College and Peidmont College...not to mention, this has been the best starting record, in the history of the volleyball program"

Kelsy Yunker
marylogo"College at the University of Mary, in North Dakota, is great. It's so much different than I expected but I like it.
We're currently 5-2 but we haven't started conference yet. We went to Alaska for a tournament!! We just went 3-0 at a tournament we hosted here at our campus so things are good. I get some playing time but I'm not starting. I miss home, and my family and friends, but I think I'm adjusting well. I'm so busy with school practice and study hall plus all the traveling that we do! GO MARAUDERS!"
"

dartmouthlogoLexi Campbell
"I am doing great and loving Dartmouth! I have already met some amazing people and am having a great time. We are currently 3-0, and going into a tournament at North Carolina State this weekend. I am getting a little playing time, which I was really excited about!"

Natalie Cadmus

rcclogo"HEY! Well my team (RCC) didn't do so great our first tournament but the match after that we smashed Southwestern and the tournament after that we smashed MSJC and Chaffey. Rumor is we're up for state this season! Unfortunately, I threw out my hip, and my back is still recovering so hopefully I'll be back in action soon."
