Happy New Year! January, 2009

Message From the Directors
Greetings!
2009 should be our most exciting year ever. It
is a pleasure to look out over a gym full of parents, players and
coaches who all share the same vision of competing with class and
integrity. In
the world of club volleyball, where club hopping is the expected norm,
we retained over 90% of our players and coaches from last season. That
is absolutely unheard of in this industry. In addition, without
aggressively recruiting, we gained more than 25 players from other
clubs who were looking for a higher level of training and structure. Our second year of FIT training picks up where we left off last year. Our goal is to achieve a high level of fitness, strength and health. Point
Loma Nazarene University, where Viper Assistant Director, Rochelle
Short is the Head Coach, implemented the FIT training this season and
went the entire year without any player missing a single game due to
injury, on their way to a 5th place finish at Nationals. As always, our goal is to help each player, team and coach attain their highest level of success. Our staff is excited for the New Year, and is looking forward to working with our players and teams to achieve their goals. We'd like to send a Good luck wish to our elite and travel teams who are in pursuit of a gold medal in 2009. May they find the desire to play together, put in the work and commit to something extraordinary.
We wish you and your family a happy and peaceful New Year,

Inspirational Quote
Leadership is based on a spiritual quality;
the power to inspire, the power to inspire
others to follow.
-- Vince
Lombardi
A great team is always spirited; and often times, it only takes one player to inspire a whole team in a powerful way. We encourage all of our players to find inspiration this year and to inspire others on and off the volleyball court. Inspiration can come from anywhere or nowhere, but it is within each of us to share.

her Varsity team at Murrieta

School.
She was named to the 2nd team all-league. She was a scholar athlete as well with a 3.8
GPA. In her 8th grade junior
high team she was named MVP as they finished League Champs. Out door she has earned her singe A Women's

Dana's family who supports her in everyway includes (by
age): father- Andy, mother- Greta, older brother- Erik, older sister- Inga, younger
sister- Annika, younger brother Andrew, and twin younger brothers- Donald and

Viper Collegiate Recruiting
Collegiate coaches from around the country recruit heavily out of the SCVA region because of the high level of play, training and competitiveness in California. Coaches are looking for strong players to compete at the next level and sometimes contribute as early as freshman year. Temecula Volleyball Club has worked hard the past few years to implement and provide the training and skill development that college coaches are looking for and have come to expect from top SCVA players.
In combination with our training program, we have increased our recruiting efforts 10-fold with Dana Burkholder leading the way. As a former Pac-10 college recruiter for the University of Arizona, and a former top high school recruit, she understands the process from both ends and will help Viper athletes and parents navigate the business of recruiting. Her goal is to help educate parents and athletes on the process of recruitment so they feel confident and comfortable talking with coaches, finding the right school, visiting schools and making a commitment to the right school at the right time.

Training Tips - Knee Drives
Viper Coaches are often teaching knee drives in the gym. The goal of a knee drive is to get the core and body underneath a ball that is hit in front of a player in such a way that they can achieve an upward trajectory deflection.
The Brazilian player in green is showing great technique - she has stepped to the side, gotten her outside leg and arms underneath the ball and will achieve an upward trajectory to the setter because her upper body is still tall/up. After contact, her knee will hit the ground and she will cross-over with her trail leg and stand up.
The Italian player in blue is showing faulty technique - she has lunged to the ball and not gotten underneath it with her legs or platform. Her upper body is also bent over and this contributes to her poor deflection angle. She may get this ball up, but the trajectory will be very low and difficult for the setter to play.
Viper's goal is teach techniques and systems that work at every level. Though many of the techniques we teach are sophisticated and require years and years of training to master, we fill it is important that they are introduced to them at a young age. Most volleyballer's will say that ball control is the most important aspect of the game, and it is our goal to give all our players the opportunity to learn ball control techniques.
Coach Dana's reminder: body and positioning control = ball control.
