Message From the Director

Greetings!

These are exciting times at Viper Volleyball.  Our tryouts for our 12 and 14's have been completed and it is great to see the results of their hard work and training paying off.  They are probably the most talented group we have ever had at this age, from top to bottom.

Our tryouts for the 15 thru 18 age groups are coming up shortly, and we are excited about the opportunity to take these players to the next level.  Club volleyball and collegiate level volleyball are improving year after year and we are commited to training and coaching our athletes to succeed at this level. Dana Burkholder

As a former University of Arizona coach and recruiter, the addition of Dana Burkholder as our head coach and director of college recruiting has proven to be a huge benefit to everyone  in our program. She is already working with numerous athletes in their approach to college coaches and getting a college scholarship.

It has been extremely rewarding to watch and support our players from last season. At last count,
we had 12 freshman players making major contributions to their HS varsity teams, most of them
as starters.

It has been equally gratifying to watch our six seniors from last season who earned scholarships play
volleyball at the collegiate level, and all contributing as starters on their respective teams. Postural Solutions

For the 2008-09 season, we will continue with our FIT training through Postural Solutions.  It is
extremely reassuring to note that Nebraska and UCLA as well as PLNU have implemented similar Egoscue training programs for their teams.  In addition, we will have in place position-specific training under the direction of Dana Burkholder and Rochelle Short, head coach at Point Loma Nazarene University.

We look forward to the opportunity to serve your family.

Viper LogoTryouts: 15-18 age groups

Viper is looking forward to having a competitive and highly talented 15-18 age group tryout and season. We have seen many Viper players grow stronger this summer and fall and are excited to have them back for another great club season.

There is some confusion regarding the CIF & SCVA rules about tryout dates. We would like to clarify first and foremost that our tryout dates and age groups are in accordance with any and all rules set by either the CIF or SCVA.

To be totally clear:

1. High school players can tryout for club on the first day SCVA allows unless they are from San Diego County. If you live in San Diego County you cannot tryout until your high school season is over. Players from other counties can tryout for club on the date set by the SCVA even if they are still playing for their high school team.
2. High school players can't practice on sundays with their high school team, but they can tryout for club on a sunday.

Tryout age is age as of September 1st, 2009.

Viper Collegiate Recruiting

Collegiate coaches from around the country recruit heavily out of the SCVA region because of the high level of play, training and competitiveness in California. Coaches are looking for strong players to compete at the next level and sometimes contribute as early as freshman year. Temecula Volleyball Club has worked hard the past few years to implement and provide the training and skill development that college coaches are looking for and have come to expect from top SCVA players.

In combination with our training program, we have increased our recruiting efforts 10-fold with Dana Burkholder leading the way. As a former Pac-10 college recruiter for the University of Arizona, and a former top high school recruit, she understands the process from both ends and will help Viper athletes and parents navigate the business of recruiting. Her goal is to help educate parents and athletes on the process of recruitment so they feel confident and comfortable talking with coaches, finding the right school, visiting schools and making a commitment to the right school at the right time.

Viper Athlete "Spotlight"
 Viper Logo
Raquel "Rocky" Ortiz was born on March 26th 1993.  She has been a Viper player since she was 9 years old.  She started playing on her dads' team Temecula 12 Elite-Tommy and quickly picked up the game of volleyball.  She received several awards as an 8, 9, 10 and 11 year old.  She was awarded the coaches award in 2002 and 2003.  While in her third year as a 12 Elite team member she received the Setter's Award.  In her final season as a 12 Elite team member in 2005, she was named Team MVP.

As Rocky progressed up to the 14s division she was a member of Temecula 14 Elite and was presented the 2006 Best Server Award.  In 2007, she was selected to be the only freshman on her Varsity High School team, Vista Murrieta.  This same year, she was the libero for Temecula 14 Steve, who won the Volleyball Festival in Reno, Nevada.  In 2008,  she was the only 15 year old on Temecula 18 Vemma who earned their way to the Junior Olympics in Dallas Texas.  Temecula 18 Vemma placed 5th in the American division and it was largely in part to Rocky dedication, commitment and desire as the Libero.  She was selected to the All-American all-tournament team as a 15 year old!

Rocky's game is very well rounded.  She loves to play beach volleyball as well.  Her biggest accomplishments on the sand are; 2nd place in Roxy tournament with partner Terra Varney, 1st play at AAU invitational with partner Natalie "book-out" Gonzales and a 2nd place in an AAU tournament with partner Allison Cook.

Rocky is also taking care of business in the classroom with a GPA of 3.67 and her athleticism and talent she will be able to choose the school she wants to attend and play volleyball.  She aspires to be a Pediatrician and her top five college choices right now include: 1. Sacred Heart, 2. UCLA, 3. USC, 4. Stanford, 5. West Virginia.

On the personal side of Rocky there is no better meal than her "mommy's lasagna".   She has two siblings, four-year-old twins Thomas and Emily.  Her mom Stacy and dad, exclusive Viper coach, Tommy are her biggest supporters.  Rocky states "Tommy is the key to all my volleyball success because he taught me everything I know and pushes me to do my best no matter what."

Rocky's favorite celebrity is Misty May because May is positive and a great role model to kids.  "...and she has won many awards."

Rocky's favorite movie is The Lion King and when asked if she could be any character in the movie who would it be and why.  She responded, "Simba!!!! Because he is cute, brave and strong."  Her favorite song is Live your Life, by Rhianna.

Whenever, she is not playing volleyball, studying, babysitting her twin siblings or at school, Rocky likes to hang out with her friends, go to movies and perfect her skills on the alleys of Brunswick Bowling.
